A tale of two reportings

On the Gingrich speech at RJC2012: Jen Rubin Tweets, “sitting next to @lynnsweet at #rjc2012. room is not exactly on fire for newt,” then follows-up later with “going to solve electability concern by challenging obama to lincoln-douglas debates…. Gingrich is always the smartest man in his own mind” and “gingrich is like a bad shakespeare production.. if he talks fast he hopes we think he’s very sophisticated”

Compare with Ben Smith from Politico: “[…] it’s standing room only for Gingrich here at #RJC2012,” or Legal Insurrection: “NewtGingrich hits a home run #RJC2012,” or Benjy Sarlin, who writes, “Romney did well with the audience at #RJC2012, but Newt is absolutely killing it.”

Curious. Probably just a testament to the failure of objectivity as a tool for disinterested journalism, meaning that, since we can’t really agree on what we’re seeing, it’s okay, fundamentally, to decree all opinions valid and equal, and to suggest that a consensus of perception can stand in for the kinds of “truths” we can never in any case divorce from the limitations of human subjectivity and language.

Which epistemological formulation is very very appealing to the liberal Berkeley set, I’m told.

— Or else it’s just that somebody is fibbing, and perhaps we can make a case that one side is right and the other is (wait for it!) wrong.

I know. Perish the thought. It’s only fair that everybody be equally right and equally wrong. Nuance. Social justice.

The real question is if she actually has any effect. I don’t think any conservatives actually believe anything she says, though they will enable her a bit (see Ricochet).

    Jen Rubin Is So Predictable

Drew wondered why Jen Rubin wasn’t gleeping over the Trump debate.

He reasoned she was taking a pass on the subject because Mitt Romney had not yet declined, and that the moment he did, she would then start talkiing about how awful it was, and how everyone involved was a clown.

See, she wanted to say that. But as she’s Romney Super Fan #1, she couldn’t say that. Not until Mitt actually opted out of the debate.

At any rate, Drew predicted that perfectly, as well as her eventual use of the word “clown” to disparage the event.

As if Politico ever went anywhere

Politico is exactly what they’ve always been, the only change is that they were unable to maintain the thin veneer for any length of time.

Rubin? Same. The WaPo would never have hired her otherwise.
