(INTERIOR, Mr. CAIN head and shoulders, appears to be seated at desk, actually standing at lectern) MR. CAIN: Good evening I’m Herman Cain. I recently used the shorthand phrase “brainwashed” in discussing black American voting patterns. Let me expand. I’ll do that by giving a pretend speech to the NAACP.

Why pretend? The NAACP would never listen to a black conservative at one of their conventions, much less one that is going to beat Barack Obama for President in 2012. Those “leaders” have bought into a progressive or socialist vision of how Black people can and should advance in America that has been terribly, terribly ineffective. But their power and their livelihood depend on keeping that vision in place – government dependent citizens, government dependent public employees, government schools, government housing projects. Endless brain-dead social agencies, guilt-driven non-profits, and ineffective community organizers. This huge group of “leaders” have careers built on the poverty of black America, because they put their socialism, their ideology, ahead of their community.

They are wrong, and they know that they lose a fair and open argument. So they use their media power to keep people like me – a man of good faith, who has seen with his own eyes what works and what doesn’t, from talking to people like you – honest, hard-working people who want a better life for themselves and their children. That’s what I meant by brainwashing.

Here’s the hard truth: if Republicans had done to black Americans what the liberal/progressive welfare state has done to them over the past 40 years, Al Sharpton would be screaming genocide. For once he would not be wrong.

That’s what the gatekeepers don’t want you to hear. And that’s why I’m here and not at the real NAACP Convention. (pan out to reveal Mr. Cain standing at lectern in huge empty stadium) So let me say my peace. Let me say to you these hard truths.
Then you can take your power back, and free yourself.

(re-approach lectern, adjust the tie, maybe a raised eye-brow self-acknowledgement at a side camera ) MR. CAIN: Thank you for this opportunity to address this NAACP convention. I start by saying, with every fiber of my being, every ounce of my intellect and every drop of my God-given soul, that I believe that implementing my policies would dramatically improve the lives of Black people in America.

(switch to EXT., the gate outside the stadium, where a double line of SEIU type gatekeepers are lined up, looking at a LEADER with a bullhorn, and a small group of black Americans are outside the gate. In that group are CHURCH-GOING GRANDMOTHERS #1 and #2) LEADER (quietly): Boo.
SEIU Team (loud, pumping fists, waving OFA printed signs): Boo! Boo!
CHURCH-GOING GRANDMOTHER #1 to CHURCH-GOING GRANDMOTHER #2: He thinks his policies will improve our lives, and they are booing already?

(INT.) MR. CAIN: No community ever got wealthy on civil service jobs. We need to own things. Own property! Own businesses! Buy and sell. All those things the socialists tell you are evil are actually the tools we need to build wealth, for ourselves and our community. That’s how everyone else has gotten wealthy. Reality, not ideology!… (fade out)

(EXT.) LEADER(quietly): Uncle Tom.
SEIU Team (not quite as loud ): Uncle Tom! Uncle Tom!
CHURCH-GOING GRANDMOTHER #2 gives CHURCH-GOING GRANDMOTHER #1 The Look, then says to SEIU TEAM: Quiet now, I want to hear what this man has to say. What’s wrong with building wealth for our community?

(INT.) MR. CAIN: The government schools have failed our community miserably and time is up! We will not lose one more child to the teacher’s unions. The first priority of our schools is supposed to be to educate our kids. In reality they exist to pay teachers and elect Democrats. If your child attends a failing school, you should have the same choice the rich white liberals have and the choice most school-teachers themselves take, to send your child to a school of your choice. Reality, not ideology!… (fade out)

(EXT.) LEADER(quietly): Racist.
SEIU TEAM looks at each other confused, THUG #1 to LEADER: Racist?
LEADER(though bullhorn, angrily): Racist!
SEIU Team (dispiritedly): Racist! Racist!
CHURCH-GOING GRANDMOTHER #1: Well I’ve had enough of these crazy socialists. Let me through!
The GRANDMOTHERS push through the gatekeepers, lead the small group outside the gate into the stadium, joined by a few of the SEIU TEAM who throw down their printed OFA signs. The view expands, other are streaming into the stadium from everywhere, all Americans, the crowd forms around MR. CAIN on stage.

(INT.)MR. CAIN: (fading in) Black people die young because of the welfare state! Black men go to jail because of the welfare state! Black people are poor and less educated because of the welfare state! I’ll debate and win that argument with any of these so-called black leaders, including our community-organizer-in-chief!

Here is the reality: They offer you the car-pool lane to perpetual poverty and government dependence, while we offer you a path to independence and prosperity. Thank you for opening your mind and your heart to a better way for our people and for all of America, and God Bless America.

The cheering ends, the CHURCH-GOING GRANDMOTHERS and THUG #1 walk away together. CHURCH-GOING GRANDMOTHER #1: Now Malik I have not seen you in church for a long time, but that’s between you and your God. I do hear that you have a young baby now, is that right?
THUG #1: Yes maam.
CHURCH-GOING GRANDMOTHER #1: I think that man Herman Cain made a lot of sense. One thing he didn’t say, regardless of what he or anybody else does or can do, is that nothing, NOTHING, will improve the life of that young baby more than you and her Mama raising her together. Education, poverty, jail, drug abuse: all of these things are much less likely with a man in the house.
CHURCH-GOING GRANDMOTHER #2: The grandmas, the aunties, we’re tired son.
CHURCH-GOING GRANDMOTHER #1: Accept your responsibilities and you will find that THAT is the first step to freeing yourself.
