FOX News as a false flag operation?

I’ve been down on the FOXNews network for quite some time now — it has become an establishment GOP organ that tries to balance itself by giving voice to an equally establishment set of Democrat mouthpieces, and as such, it is an inside-the-Beltway hive mind that represents a point of view at odds with the electorate. Plus, Shep Fucking Smith.

And it looks to me like the goal is to double down.

In other words, when FOX changes its tagline from “fair and balanced” to “no labels!” I won’t be among those who act surprised.

In fact, I suspect we’ll start seeing it more and more from the big new media outlets we’ve come to associate with the “right.” One need only look as far as the roster of writers to recognize the pattern.

A tip: if you look up one day to find that you are taking political counsel on conservatism from, say, Jen Rubin or Jazz Shaw or Karl Rove or Bill O’Reilly? You’ve already given away the game.

The new media becomes the old. It’s the circle of media life — as anyone who follows Twitter already knows.

No labels? I’m betting on “lean forward”.

I still struggle to understand why. At a time when a real grassroots effort in underway to claw back some liberty and push back on Establishment propaganda, why would the network decide that now is a good time to join MiniTru? Is the allure of the Beltway so very heady that not one mogul can break from the pack for realsies?

    Politics are asymmetrical, Squid.

    HA!

    Shep Fucking Smith?

How right you are! Another media personality that pretends he can’t even smell his own farts.

    Unfortunately, I can…

  5. B. Moe says:

The media is always going to bias toward a nannystate. They point out the problems, the government solves them.

  6. Joe says:

Is any of this a surprise? O’Reilly is a thin skinned Long Island populist with a jealously thing for Hannity? Duh! Shep Smith is one of those confused Southern homosexuals who can’t (publically) admit he likes dick.

Shep is your go-to-guy for Bear Alerts and freeway car chases.

  8. dicentra says:

Good thing Fox got rid of Glenn Beck jumped ship while he still could. No doubt he saw the trend backstage and decided he wanted to own all his content and not be subject to the squeamishness of the Fox suits.

has anyone seen any data on the ratings at the 5 o’clock hour since beck left?

Fox News has never been “far right,” so they really cannot course-correct from that. They are center-right with a strong dose of GOP establishment. That has always been the case, I think.

As for the on-air personalities reading the news, they had Brit Hume and Major Garrett as the strongest conservatives. Both are gone. I think Bret Baier is right of center, but not all that much. The Panel people are mostly conservative but tend to lean establishment.

For the other shows, they had Glenn Beck, who I don’t consider far-right. Gone. O’Reilly is all about O’Reilly, Greta’s a liberal, and Robo-Shep is so liberal he has spouted their talking points in off-air interviews (paraphrased, “The fact that we reported this story proves the media isn’t biased.”).

I think it would be a bad business decision to change the format to more liberal. When men get old they sometimes turn into pussies. Maybe that’s what has happened here.

    And yet, not. GBTV.

As he put it this morning: “We’ve spit ourselves out of the system.”

Major Garrett is not all that conservative. You’ll find him turning up most often these days on MSNBC. He is a solid, straight up news guy who will ask the right questions. But he’s nobody’s right-winger.

  15. cranky-d says:

Gone from FauxNewz, I meant. But you knew that, didn’t you? Meanie.

  16. cranky-d says:

I won’t argue about Garrett. Appearing on MSNBC doesn’t hurt him in my book, unless he starts sounding like the regulars over there.

I’d say they’re GOP establishment with a strong dose of center-right myself. My guess is what’s happening is that as the rest of the media becomes more openly left of center* Fox News is moving into the vacated space. The overall direction, however, remains left.

*(Sadly, MSNBC is leading the way —they’re like the NYT that way, mattering only because people who DO matter think that they matter)

Fox News isn’t there to help. It’s there to sell Cialis and Depends and gold investment opportunities

  21. They’ve got Murdock so scared he shits himself every time someone says “cell phone” he’ll be making sure Ailes keeps the “Fox and Friends” crowd happy while laying off on the truth. Like ABC in the 80’s. It’ll be the old people and family network… then one day Disney will take over and your six year old daughter is using her “fairy princess throbbing wand with rabbit” to teach her friends how to give blowjobs like she saw on Hanna Does Montana.

Can’t tell you how fulfilling it feels every time I see a “FREE SCOOTER FOR YOU!” commercial on TV. My sense of charity knows no bounds, it would seem.

It is a testament to how far the media playing field tipped to the left that Fox News was ever considered reliably conservative.

    Cranky,

Britt Hume rocks like a party star and still does a political analysis piece fairly regularly on Special Report (Bret Baier’s show) he also works one of Fox’s weekend shows. He seems to especially enjoy smacking Juan Williams around (Who I must say usually takes the beating with more grace than any other prog I’m aware of;).

  29. cranky-d says:

Brit Hume is Teh Awesome, Danger.

I still remember the 2008 elections. He had his drink on and was scooting around the studio, commenting. I loved it.

I think I will. Thank you for the invitation. In am sick, in case you haven’t noticed. I have an infection (courtesy of my son) in my eyes.

My brain is fine, as far as I can tell by self diagnosis.

    Some would disagree.

I always liked to see him catch Kondracke in a factual error while Teh Mort was pushing his Establican talking points.

Apparently people who work closely with Brit Hume learn very quickly that when Brit corrects you, you are wrong. Kondracke somehow managed not to cringe, usually, but he was always abashed.

  33. Carin says:

Brit Hume still appears rather often on Fox news. I lurvs him. and watching Chris wallace beat up on Plouffe last sunday made me giddy.
