  1. Joe says:

If it can work in the land of a thousand loons, it can work anywhere.

  2. LTC John says:

“Ignorance and arrogance are a very dangerous combination,” Dayton said. “Makes a democracy difficult to function.”

So, Dayton will be resigning then?

  3. Curmudgeon says:

I think the national GOP is still scared like it’s 1995. But things have changed. Left “Newspapers” were thicker back then and the lamestream media ruled the roost. No Fox News, No Blogs.

  4. Squid says:

    What I want to see:

    “Governor Dayton,

We received with pleasure your letter of the 14th, and have given much thought to your words. While we are gratified that you have finally come around to admitting the inevitable, the following paragraph struck us as something that we cannot ignore.

Unfortunately, your plan achieves this goal [bridging the budget gap], not by permanent sources of funding, but rather by borrowing an additional $1.4 billion [against school transfers and the tobacco settlement].

“After considering your criticism, we cannot help but agree with you that patching the budget deficit with accounting gimmicks and ad-hoc temporary solutions is no way to proceed; indeed, it is maneuvers such as this which have have brought us to our present sorrowful condition. As such, we regretfully cannot accept your gracious offer of conditional capitulation. Instead, we offer the following $1.5 billion in program and service cuts outlined in the attached document.

We look forward to discussing the details of this offer with you at your earliest convenience. In the meantime, we will continue to watch and read local coverage of the highway projects, bars and restaurants, and family vacations that are being disrupted or ruined by an administration that claims a mandate from a 9,000-vote win in a three-way race.

    Yours sincerely,
    –The Stupid Party

P.S. Have fun with the MillerCoors lawsuit. Can’t wait to see your press conferences!”

What? A guy can wish, can’t he?

  5. Jeff G. says:

oh, you’re right, Curmudgeon. The MSM has this much correct: the Tea Party is behind whatever resolve the GOP establicans are showing. And both the MSM and the GOP establishment are pissed, and can barely contain their hatred and disdain for the stupid bitter clingers who won’t just let us go on deficit spending and kicking the can down the road.

  6. ThomasD says:

Dayton ‘agreed’ to the opposition’s budget in the sense that he agreed to accept it, so long as they make major concessions. All the rest is an coordinated MSM PR campaign.

  7. Curmudgeon says:

Yes, Jeff, there are sellout RINOs. But I honestly think a good many GOP veterans are still shellshocked from the MSM attacks of 1995.

To use a military analogy, I fear the GOP is assuming a Demukaiser Media Schlieffen Plan all over again, underestimating the Tea Party and the New Counter Media.

And so the GOP is following a Maginot / Dyle Line Plan (McConnell Plan?), rather than getting all their aircraft and tanks to the Ardennes first, before the DemuNazis do.

Yes, there are a few treasonous RINOs, just as there were a few treasonous collaborators in 1940 France. But mostly, I think it is just outmoded GOP thinking. Hopefully, the Minnesota and Wisconsin Civil Wars taught the GOP something.

  8. RoyceD57 says:

And the average Minnesotan was affected only by the closed State Parks and Rest Stops.

I think the more government is “shut down”, the more people will recognize that most of its functions are not all that important in their daily lives.

Amen. And every day Dayton knows this truth penetrates deeper and deeper into the electorate.

  10. sdferr says:

Has anyone suggested setting 80% of the Federal Government to furlough come Aug. 3? Send most of Washington home for a month or more and we’ll see much the same yawn. But then, hideous American independence will take over as people create their various work-arounds, doing for themselves as they were wont to do as a matter of course. Terrible lessons might be larnt, wot?

  11. […] called update! As Jeff says: watch, and […]

  12. LTC John says:

I am reminded of a mistake many make when participating in mediations… never let your schedule dictate your ability to stay at it, and get to the end you seek.

  13. cranky-d says:

I think it was the Miller/Coors thing that killed him. They pass regulations that require licensing, then refuse to do the licensing because they shut down the government. That’s stupid. Standing between millions of people and their beer, on the other hand, is suicidal.

We still have Newt padding around, but at least he is not in government and speaker of the house.

  15. Ernst Schreiber says:

cranky-d I figure that was done deliberately. The unexpected part is that the angry swillers got angry with the governor.

  16. happyfeet says:

The judge in the Roger Clemens federal perjury trial abruptly declared a mistrial on the second day of testimony after the government inadvertently allowed the jury to hear statements from a U.S. congressman discussing the credibility of one of the key witnesses against the former All-Star baseball pitcher.*

yay! The idea that someone could lose their god-given freedom for lying to a bunch of dirty congresswhores is deeply not America I think.

  17. Squid says:

I think it was the Miller/Coors thing that killed him.

This is almost certainly the case. Thing is, Dayton could extend the expired certificates (the MillerCoors label registrations and the bar/restaurant purchase cards) by executive order, if he wanted. There’s no way he can survive having that thrown in his face, especially since it will come with any number of related questions: “Why not open the state parks and trust that Minnesotans won’t burn them down?” “Why not open the rest areas and let volunteers do the mopping and trash-hauling?”

This, logically, would lead the way toward even more uncomfortable questions, like “Why are we paying for free day care for mothers who could ask their families for help?” or “Why are we paying for local government aid that gets wasted on municipal greenhouses up north?” or “Why can’t we buy liquor on Sundays?” or “Why should we pay a half-billion dollars for a Vikings stadium?”

    Can’t have that.

  18. Ernst Schreiber says:

I’m hoping the Republicans will tell Dayton to pound sand since he’s asking for additional approprations for construction (or something like that).

Do your job and sign the budget you should have signed in the first place, Markie.

  19. geoffb says:

    Re: #2

Dayton was trying to do Londo Mollari but he doesn’t have the presence or the wit.

  20. Vlad the Impala says:

If it can work in the land of a thousand loons, it can work anywhere.

That’s TEN thousand loons, if you please.

IT was pretty remarkable that there were only two visible signs that the gov’t in MN was shut down. As I drove to work, I saw the rest stops and weigh stations were closed, so the truckers had to stop at a truck stop in Wisconsin before entering MN.

Second, the Lamestream local media breathlessly regurgitated the numerous ways that everything was going to hell! They sure didn’t stop collecting sate sales tax either.

We’ll see exactly what Ditsy Dayton finally agrees to. I think he’s still plotting to eat the rich, however.

Not bad when served in a Provençale manner with shallots and aubergines garnished with truffle pâté, brandy, a fried egg on top and Spam.
