"U.S. Gov't Agency Plans $2.84 Billion Loan for Oil Refinery—In Colombia"

Of course it does.

Honestly. How does Obama’s approval rating stay above, say, 20%? I mean, can he make his disdain for us any more obvious?

We’re lost as a nation.

  1. Blake says:

Well, with the way things are going, that $2.84 billion will only be worth a couple of Colombian Pesos fairly soon.

  2. Carin says:

YOU HAVE GOT TO BE FRAKING WITH ME.

The public-policy rationale for the $2.84 billion loan for the Colombian oil refinery project is the same as the rationale for all Export-Import Bank loans to foreign interests: to create jobs in the United States.

“The transaction will help create or sustain over 15,000 American jobs for a total of four years,” says the bank’s statement about the loan.

Well, that’s only a tad under $200,000 per job (check my math)- that will last for four years. WELL DONE.

  3. DarthLevin says:

You forgot to divide by 4, Carin. That’s 15,000 jobs paying $47,333.33 a year for those four years.

    That’s before taxes. And graft.

  4. Squid says:

Isn’t it quaint, that a loan guarantee from the U.S. is worth something? If I were a bond buyer, I’d be looking to the big petroleum refiners to issue loan guarantees on Treasury notes.

  5. cranky-d says:

I guess Columbia be shipping us gasoline directly, then. How thoughtful of our idiot in chief.

  6. JD says:

So now banks are using the “created or saved” metric?

  7. Squid says:

A couple of things that get me, upon further reflection:

    A) It seems like a good investment, honestly. Columbia can use the extra refining capacity, especially when given the terrible mismanagement at the national petroleum firms of some of its regional neighbors. It’s surely a better investment than throwing a couple more billions at Middle Eastern despots in exchange for them not bad-mouthing the Israelis. Publicly. Too often.
    2) If it’s a good investment, why do they need loans or loan guarantees from us? You’d think the pro-formas would be sufficient for them to arrange financing on their own.
iii) I realize this is an oft-repeated question, but why is it okay to invest in energy abroad, while domestically our development dollars are restricted to Trains To Nowhere?

  8. irongrampa says:

An all-purpose response, Squid, to your questions goes as follows–“Shut up, they explained”.

    Applicable in all situations.

  9. dicentra says:

When one of my Colombian companions insisted that the U.S. cheats Colombia, the example she gave was that they sell us oil and we sell it back at a higher price.

    “But refined, right?” I asked.

Yup. Apparently, we’re supposed to refine their gas for free. And now Obama is making that a reality, bless his heart.

  10. Jim in KC says:

So maybe “…consider a trade-in” will change to “…move to Colombia.”

He’s a piece of work, this guy. Whoever runs in 2012 needs to point out his lies and malfeasance over and over and not worry about his attack dogs.

One way is to make sure you skew your poll samples, 35% Dem, 27% Rep, and 36% Ind as in the recent Marist Poll. Rasmussen’s last party affiliation survey shows the country is Dem 35%, Rep 34%, Ind 30%.

I think Rs are less likely to answer polls. I know I will never answer one again.

  13. Spiny Norman says:

How does Obama’s approval rating stay above, say, 20%?

A massive 24/7 effort on the part of the MBM.

Look on the bright side, it could have been Venezuela that Baracky is subsidizing.

  14. Spiny Norman says:

I think Rs are less likely to answer polls. I know I will never answer one again.

    Heh.

The last time I was polled over the phone, I had the left-ish college student asking the questions agreeing with me that the pollsters weren’t asking the right questions.

  15. Didn’t Obama send enough money to Colombia while he was in college?

    Ooh, Snap!

  17. Carin says:

    Testing. Iphone

  18. JimK says:

Just like the billions we loaned to Petrobras so they could do offshore drilling. All part of the plan…

  19. You’re saying they have a plan JimK? I knew it! Obama and his geniuses are Cylons!

I hope the last episode is better this time…;-)

iii) I realize this is an oft-repeated question, but why is it okay to invest in energy abroad, while domestically our development dollars are restricted to Trains To Nowhere?

Cause the democrats are all racists who want to pollute poor folks lands and use the bounty for themselves?

  21. TmjUtah says:

Hey, why don’t you just go buy a tan, white man?

    America depends on YOUR taxes.

The tanning booth tax was the act that crystallized my conviction that this guy and his mob was going to be several orders of magnitude more evil than I had thought possible.

They rather are “in your face”, aren’t they? “Kinetic action”. “Czars”.
GM’s bond holders… and today on Drudge the word is that the Feds are dumping GM stock for an 11 billion loss.

Fuck. What’s ANOTHER 11 billion. It’s not like there is any value left in a dollar anyway.

  22. Jeff says:

Obama’s taken on a 2nd job – writing campaign commercials for the republican party.
