OK. That must be one of those things that looks easy but isn’t.
It isn’t. The size of the thing makes it very hard to grip on to, and all the weight is obviously quite concentrated, making it difficult to pull up off the ground. When it’s on its side, it’s easier to lift (with a pinch grip), but most people can’t do it. By the face is harder.
My goal is to lift the 50 lb York, which is the traditional blob used by strong men over the years.
Carrying logs on end (so you are not carrying a wet log across your chest) is about the same size as the blob, but they provide a better grip and they only weigh about 5-10 lbs. And my forearms ache from doing that. The 30 lbs blob I am sure is very hard to do.
Even if I had the arm strength to lift that think, I certainly don’t have the grip strength. Apparently just going to the gym isn’t enough, you actually have to do something there.
Have you been doing much grip training prior top this or did you just start with lower weight Yorks?
I’ve been doing grip training for a while.
Finding blobs is almost as difficult as lifting them. I just bought the 30# off eBay a week or two ago. I’d been using a 20# prior to that.
I’ve seen video of a guy doing 81 lbs. Certain things humans are capable of when properly trained and motivated absolutely amaze me. As I say, I want to get the York 50, and I want to pinch grip two 45# plates pressed together (smooth side out) with one hand. I also want to close the Captains of Crush grippers number 3, 3.5, and lift a 45# plate up by the hub with one hand.
Even if I had the grip strength, I have very, very small hands. I could maybe palm a softball.
I have a softball and baseball made from a kind of hard rubber with rings drilled in them for attaching a caribiner. I do softball reverse curls with 70lbs attached by way of a loading pin. With the baseball I can do more. It’s a great exercise for building forearm strength.
I thought you could just make those things by hacksawing the shaft off a 60 lb dumbbell.
You can, but you have to lathe down the end. Plus, once you get into the heavier numbers — half an 80, half a 100 — those are expensive dumbbells (a couple hundred bucks each).
70lb reverse curls with one arm? Yikes. Or is that some kind of device using two softballs attached together?
It’s essentially a rubber-coated softball with a ring in it for attaching weights. I use a loading pin and plates attached by short rope and caribiner.
Ever wonder why Michael Moore didn’t have anything to do with this movie?
Has anyone heard that when Moore dies, the plan is to drill a shaft four miles deep and drop his body into it, so a million years from now gas will be under a dollar a gallon again?
A 30lb Yorkie blobbed you on the face? Gross.
Kidding. Don’t hurt me.
oh yeah? well, um, I did that thing with the whatsit.
It’s a Yorkie. Are you SURE you had the face?
That’s no yorkie… that’s a space station!
/resistance was futile
Be very afraid when Jeff tosses the York blob with his dick.
Cock slap indeed!
I think I need a translation, so I can be properly impressed.
Oh. Google is helpful.
OK. That must be one of those things that looks easy but isn’t.
Of course, now I’m going to have to go and try it for myself.
I have been doing that unintentionally with lesser weights by carrying in split wood from the pile that is too wet to carry in a bundle.
A couple of trips and my forearms are sore the next day.
A 30lbs weight sounds like it would be challenging.

My forearms hurt just looking at that video Slart linked. Then again, there are days I can’t even lift an empty beer can that way…

I bet I know someone who can open any jar in the kitchen.
I’m not correctly my spelling any more. Y’all will just have to figure it out.

It’s nice to have goals.

Jeff: Let’s hang 30 for justice! SPOOOOON!
York 30 lb blob: NOT IN THE FACE! NOT IN THE FACE!

Yeah, but postage is a bitch, isn’t it?
I like Yorkshire puddings. They’re my kind of blobs.
USPS flat rate box!
I was thinking something like that.
Holy crap, flat rate box saves a bunch. Send the same weight through regular parcel post and it’d cost as much as buying the weight, or more.
Did you starch that blob after you cleaned and pressed it?
Gawd, I crack myself up sometimes.

Like these.
moore
thirty-one pound york

BTDT.
Don’t judge me.
