OUTLAWism ascendant [updated]

Is the time coming?

We’ll soon find out.

In the meantime, here’s an important reminder: Never forget. Or we’ll soon find ourselves right back where we startedlosing more slowly.

outlaw.

****
update: I was reading through the comments here, which it seems to me covered much of the intentionalism debate in advance of the later, more volatile intentionalism debates on the right. Worth a look, for those so inclined.

  1. happyfeet says:

inasmuch as the congressional Team R leadership isn’t changing substantially and Steele is babbling about a second term, right back where we started is probably where the safe money is

  2. Jeff G. says:

    So we keep fighting, happy.

And when we’re through, everybody but us will take the credit.

    It’s the American Way!

  3. Squid says:

Fuck you, happyfeet. The leadership stays at the top because they know which way the wind blows. You want them to lean in a different direction? Then get busy changing the wind.

  4. sdferr says:

I want to think of the masonry wall hf. It still gets built one brick at a time.

  5. happyfeet says:

jeez Mr. Squid I do not know about this fuck you happyfeet… it’s just sort of quixotic I think – these are the same ones whose execrable legislatings led to dirty socialists ascendant… and it does sorta suggest that Team R at its core has been doing some wind-proofing

like I said already we have to elect Team R to find out what they stand for

  6. Schleprockfeet says:

    Wowzy, wowzy, woo woo.

  7. Soiled Sockpuppet says:

The next 2-4 years are critical for the GOP. Boehner has said he heard what the TEA party has to say. But did he? Or will this be more politics as usual?

What was clear in 2006– people didn’t want to continue to defeat in Iraq.

What was clear in 2008– people wanted something new from Washington. They wanted less politics as usual.

What is clear in 2010– the change preached was not the change delivered. Bigger government is not something people want, and they’re beginning to see it as the drag on the economy that it is. They wants less government in their lives.

What will be clear in 2012– Will the Republicans successfully hold off Obama’s agenda? Will they cave? Will the budgets be at the very least balanced, or will pork spending rise back up in town? Will the cuts actually reduce federal spending, or will they be decreases to the increases as we’ve seen the past 25 years?

What will happen in 2014– If the government keeps growing, look for the rise of a 3rd party. They’ve got 4 years + for momentum. And this time there’s nothing Republicans or Democrats can do about it. People have lost trust and faith in government, and the 2010-2014 cycle will be critical for a restoration in the faith of governance.

If the Republicans can go to Washington, reduce spending, reform entitlements, drop Obamacare, kill Cap & Trade, and reduce taxes, then we’ll see the creation of a long lasting GOP majority. If not, its curtains. We’re already seeing the curtain drop on the Donkey. The Elephant gets one more act.

  8. Bob Reed says:

That’s right! The time for sell-out compromises will be past.

It’s time to start getting about fulfilling the promises made on the stump, and begin rolling back government, nullifying the Obama agenda thusfar, cutting spending in a meaningful way, and for cryin’ out loud reform the tax code a la Mr. Ryan’s suggestion in his Roadmap.

Before Obama’s blue ribbon commission begins to giving him cover for an economy crushing VAT, and other incentive killing taxes.

He’ll say because of the fairness, and all the smart guys sayin’ so

Time to draw a line in the sand.

  9. happyfeet says:

I really like the vote-to-defund NPR litmus test

there’s just no reason America should be in the radio business

  10. The Monster says:

Whatever problems I’ve had with Steele in the past, This Politico interview shows that he understands what the Outlaw InsurgenTEA is telling him:

The GOP leadership can’t regain power only to revert to business as usual. They won’t be able to just co-opt all of the new blood, because the TEA Party folks everywhere have told Steele and the candidates: “You get one last chance at this, and if you go to Washington and go back on what you’ve campaigned on, we’ll kick you out in the next election.”

Steele understands that if they screw this one up, there won’t be a next one. The Republicans will go the way of the Whigs.

  11. The Monster says:

there’s just no reason America should be in the radio business

Other than VOA/RFA/Radio Marti type stuff broadcasting to people oppressed by their governments.

Come to think of it, we could use some of that here, but a government-run propaganda machine is hardly going to provide it.

  12. sdferr says:

Though I completely agree that CPB – PBS – NPR all need to go, I think I’m on board with the idea that this stuff should happen somewhat down a hierarchical list of priorities, and more in the spirit of just doing ordinary business without a heap of fanfare in accompaniment, so less prominent on the whole as a badge or litmus thing. I’d hope a proper hierarchy would put the bigger stuff first because it’s actually bigger and in need of closer attention.

  13. Ric Locke says:

The test I’m looking for is House rules. It is, after all, the first thing they have to do. It may seem an arcane subject, but the Rules Committee is pretty much the biggest dog in the fight.

When they took over in 2008, Pelosi&Co. instituted rules that make it almost impossible for the minority Party to offer amendments or new Bills without support from the majority. There are other provisions that make it very hard for the minority to accomplish anything.

What I’d like to see is simple adoption of Pelosi’s Rules with “Democrat” and “Republican” swapped wherever necessary (actually the Rules don’t generally name the Party; it’s all “Majority” and “Minority”, so cut-and-paste mostly isn’t needed). If you see them adopt Rules similar to what was in force before 2008, with all the “comity” and “cooperation” and “collegiality” assumed/implied, it’s time to make sure the pitchforks are sharp and the torches are dry.

    Regards,
    Ric

  14. Nolanimrod says:

When they want a lobbyist they still hire Trent Lott or Cokie Roberts brother, Tommy. Follow the $. They do.

  15. Squid says:

I’d hope a proper hierarchy would put the bigger stuff first because it’s actually bigger and in need of closer attention.

I’d go along with this, if only because the easiest way to get buy-in from the organizations named is to say, “No, really – you give us some favorable coverage, and we’ll kill you last.”

Say what you will about Mo’s Merry Men (of Peace!), but they know how to get media buy-in.

  16. happyfeet says:

I just think the NPR vote would in short order separate the ones what get it from the ones what don’t – but hopefully we’ll have no lack of such votes

  17. happyfeet says:

omg sdferr wants to kill Big Bird

  18. ThomasD says:

We have nothing to lose by choosing targeted budget cuts that simultaneously de-fund the left. They’ll howl and scream – only further defining themselves as the party of fiscal insanity. And we may not get all of them through, but every one we do get enacted sucks a little more life out of their support network, and that will have lasting effects.

Don’t forget that their big money backers view their contributions as investments. They have no desire to directly support all their favored causes; even they know that would be too darn expensive. No, what they want to do is use their money to leverage the system into using all your money instead. Then they get to have their ‘social justice cake’ and still dine on caviar too.

We need to create some de-leveraging in this system.

  19. Joe says:

According to Scott Rasmussen, it is not the GOP winning but the Democrats losing this cycle. The status quo is not acceptable. So pay attention GOP, you are getting a second chance. Do not blow it.

  20. Joe says:

And if that does not work, then I see a third party eventually rising from the ashes. Let’s just hope it is not the literal ashes.

  21. Bob Reed says:

I dunno Ric, I’m conflicted on that. They can go back to what you call the “comity” rules, as long as Bohner follows through with his promise to include a “one item, one vote” rule.

If not, well, then I agree, hoist the libs on their own petard-so to speak.

  22. ThomasD says:

    I’m with Ric.

Keep the Pelosi rules, and when the Dems bitch tell them a) you weren’t bitching back when these rules were being written; and b) we’ll change them when you have proved you can play nice, and you can start playing nice by voting for some budget cuts.

  23. McGehee says:

I noticed in looking through the comment thread here that the guy from Futurama chided me for being unhelpful.

I hope y’all will indulge me while I offer him the timeless response: “Fuck you.”

  24. McGehee says:

As for the rest, a simple rule of thumb: If you’re not outlaw, you’re part of the problem.

  25. Soiled Sockpuppet says:

    @-#25

    That’s not helpful. ;)

  26. motionview says:

Not worth a full guest post, but I wanted to point out that in this post , where I call an 82 seat pickup for the Republicans while Nate Silver was still at 52 (the NY Times was/is deliriously cocooned), I mentioned that Nate would be working his way up to my number in order to salvage his credibility before the election. Fast forward to today: Nate is still officially calling a 54/55 seat pickup, however today he writes : Dawn breaks over New York City on Wednesday, Nov. 3. Democrats catching the early train to work are thinking about adding a little whiskey to their morning coffee. Because the headlines they are reading are truly terrible. Not only did Republicans take over the House, but they also did so going away — winning a net of 78 seats from Democrats.
Let’s make it happen, and then Wednesday we can start working the Republicans. One chance, or it’s OUTLAW 2012 for me.

  27. McGehee says:

    Good. ;-)

It’s 3:30 pm. I’m having a ketel one dry vodka martini. No olives, no twist, no wedge.

I’m celebrating cause barak obama is gonna be very peevish and angry wednesday.

Plus the vikings just waived randy moss.

  29. Thomas F says:

96+ seats, Frank loses, Hoyer loses…… tie in the senate….

  30. dicentra says:

The next 2-4 years are critical for the GOP. Boehner has said he heard what the TEA party has to say. But did he? Or will this be more politics as usual?

I think people are rarin’ to put some feet to the fire and keep ’em there. This time, we know we’re in the majority and that we can threaten GOP incumbents with primary defeats if they don’t do what we say.

Used to be they figured we’d have to vote for them because what, you’re going to go with the Dems? Now we can say, “we’ll go primary on your carcass if you don’t vote our way.”

    Good times, good times.

  31. Patrick (perpetually dyspeptic) says:

If Barney Frank loses, I’m bringing a bottle of Bakers Kentucky Straight to work with me and toasting to the arrival of Wednesday and sanity.

  32. Patrick (perpetually dyspeptic) says:

    Or maybe Templeton Rye.

  33. donald says:

If barney loses, then harry loses.

All I’m sayin, is if this happens, I’m in vegas saturday bitches.

    Ya’ll come, we’ll party.

  34. Ric Locke says:

#35 donald — if some of the more extreme “wave” predictions come to pass, you might want to avoid air travel for a few days, at least.

I’ve seen what happens when 737 meets Canada goose at altitude. It ain’t pretty. Pigs are much solider.

FIFY. If the GOP blows this chance, they go the way of the Whigs.

  36. Danger says:

Since we’re throwin down the links here’s one of a dude that knows how to throw

  37. Danger says:

“Not worth a full guest post, but I wanted to point out that in this post , where I call an 82 seat pickup”

    Motionview,

Mr. W. trumped that a while back with a 100 seat prediction. I think he had some money on the line but he has not been around lately so I’m not sure if he stands by the prediction.

  38. JD says:

Where is that clown that is going to owe Jeff a shit load of money tomorrow? Remember, the one that claimed 100+ seats?

  39. JD says:

Ah, Danger beat me to it. Mr W was the one that made that bet. I know I took him up on it, and I am pretty sure someone else did.

  40. Lefty Racebaiter says:

    JD,

Mr W. did also make an early guarantee on Scott Brown. It’d sure be nice if lightning would strike twice this time;)

  41. bh says:

The prediction is what it is. There was a thread where he was sort of a dick about it though and was taunting people saying no one took his bet even though people already had. Became an odd thing where everyone was hoping something would happen with one guy heckling us to bet against it.

    Not cool amongst friends.

  42. happyfeet says:

    heard on Yahoo! Finance…

    – …it is gonna be a major major victory for the Republicans as well as the Tea Party which is Republican but different, and Sarah Palin, who is the de facto leader of the Republican Party

    – that’s right*

  43. Lefty Racebaiter says:

Yeah bh, I saw that as well.

Could be a case of hate the messenger (at least the delivery) not the message though ;)

  44. Danger says:

    Stupid sockpuppets

  45. bh says:

    I love the message.

  46. bh says:

Love it so much that I’m taking tomorrow off to drive people to the polls.

  47. Bob Reed says:

    happyfeet,
You’re getting better man, I thought the mention of S- P- would sned you into a tailspin!

    bh,
I’ve been doing some GOTV stuff here over the last couple of weeks. Polling places are so close there’s no need to take folks there, but I’ve been reminding my neighbors daily, and will be taking a couple of my MIL’s friends as well as her.

The follow through is important to the success of any plan.

  48. happyfeet says:

no not really I’m kinda resigned to her being the Team R nominee at this point. And it’s like blue car syndrome. Lots of other people seem resigned as well.

  49. bh says:

Excellent, Bob. And you’re definitely right, unless everyone goes out and takes everyone they can, they’re not making it happen. They’re just wishing and hoping. Which doesn’t help in the least.

One day left. Make it count.

  50. Bob Reed says:

No one is the team R nominee yet. No one’s running! But I’m pleased to see your blood pressure stay under control when her name is mentioned.

All that will come in due time. First let’s win tomorrow. Then, let’s cut some spending…

  51. happyfeet says:

the die has been cast like a matchbox car already I think

  52. donald says:

I’m gonna be like Declan on Brotherhood.

I’m sit at the bar at spons, and I’m paying (1) shot for each right vote.

That’s my get out the vote strategy today.
