the “I’m way to tired to post anything of thought or substance, so I’ll post this instead” post

If absence makes the heart grow fonder, why do the mice play so much when the cat is away?

Or do the Germans not want us to even ask such questions…?

Also, ObamaCare.

“States should steer the mandated health-insurance exchanges in a pro-market direction and dare Washington to stop them.”

States should make a lot of damn changes to a lot of damn things, and dare Washington to stop them. When Texas secedes, I’m moving there, heat be damned.

  2. happyfeet says:

If you look at the Tea Party, I think most of them would say they hate Big Business.*

  3. cranky-d says:

Where in Texas are you going, Squid? I’ve decided I want to stay pretty far north, though even then humidity is still an issue. I’m thinking about Denton because I like college towns.

This is hypothetical of course, because for some really odd reason I like Minneapolis. I’m not sure why some days. But if Texas decides to go for it, I want to be there with them.

  4. Darleen says:

I stay in CA because of family — elderly parents on one side, all my kids on another.

But damn if I could convince them all to move to TX ..

  5. Darleen says:

OT .. sorry I haven’t posted/commented here … I got very very sick yesterday and haven’t gone more than 10 feet from my bed …

  6. Spiny Norman says:

I hope you feel better soon, Darleen.

If/when I leave CA, it’ll probably be for Flagstaff, Arizona, or someplace similar. My best friend moved to Pine Top, AZ a couple of years ago, but it’s a much smaller town and he says work is very hard to come by…

  7. Obstreperous Inifidel says:

It’s going around, Darleen. My wife has been feeling ill for the last few days. I hope you feel better, soon.

As for moving to Texas. In a heartbeat. I just have to convince LamontYouBigDummy to let me me homestead on his back 40 ;)

  8. alppuccino says:

Developing my own country here in North Cenral Ohio. Tremendous border security.

  9. happyfeet says:

Wichita Falls is more north than Denton and more charming I think

  10. Obstreperous Inifidel says:

Hell, al, you’re a lot closer. Do you have a back 40? A back 20? A back 50 yards? I needs to get me and the family out of the hell hole aka Cleveland.

  11. Obstreperous Infidel says:

I’m still having spelling issues. It’s getting worse.

  12. cranky-d says:

Thanks, hf. I’ll look into it.

  13. alppuccino says:

Back 17, and hopefully growing. I call it “neighbor control”. I’ve always enjoyed the Cleveland area, and their about 2 hrs from here.

  15. cranky-d says:

I’m visiting San Diego because my father lives here, but I cannot see moving back to stay for the rest of my life. I like it here a lot, but the government is totally screwing up the place, and the gun laws are onerous.

I really doubt he would want to move.

  16. Where in Texas are you going, Squid?

I’m not Squid, but it would have to be west Texas for me, preferably up in the Panhandle. It’s smack-dab in Tornado Alley, but at least you can see them coming.

  17. cranky-d says:

Why is west Texas the place to be? I decided on north simply because I wanted to avoid the southern weather.

  18. 5. Comment by Darleen on 10/14 @ 10:43 am

OI is right — it is going around. My wife got it before I did, and while I was suffering its worst we heard that her mother in Chattanooga got it.

And of course Jeff is still getting over it.

  19. y’all might want to take any allergies into consideration. they are kicking my ass this week.

  20. Why is west Texas the place to be?

    It’s a dry heat.

And if you consider that the Panhandle, which is the northernmost part of Texas, is considered part of “west Texas,” you’ve got a big wide-open area to choose from.

  21. cranky-d says:

I like dry heat. I do much better without humidity. Do you have any recommendations for places to live? I like to add them to my yahoo weather thingy just to monitor how much better (or worse) those places are than I live now.

  22. SDN says:

I live in Plano, which is Dallas area, and the only way I’ll move is in a hearse. It’s so nice to be in a town where the local gun ranges put ads on the city buses. Plus lots of good restaurants, sane neighbors…

BTW, one of the good old boys I shoot with came up with a great business idea: when the Republicans take the Congress, we ask them to issue us a Letter of Marque and set up a “cartel safari tour” on Falcon Lake (where the guy and his wife were jetskiing and he got shot).

  23. Blake says:

MY wife and I plan to head to AZ if possible. Open carry hardly raises an eyebrow and no license required for conceal carry.

  24. John Bradley says:

Wichita Falls is more north than Denton and more charming I think

Yeah, but Denton is The Home of Happiness.

Did Wichita Falls have a whole musical written about it? I think not!

  25. cranky-d says:

My brother is moving to AZ, so the state is his now. If I even got close, he’d think I’m trying something.

  26. Do you have any recommendations for places to live?

I wish I’d been to west Texas. So far I’ve only ever seen DFW and the I-20 corridor east of same, at least from ground level.

My wife has been through there though and she has a liking for the Lubbock area.

  27. Thing about Arizona is, if Obama gets his way in court it wouldn’t be hard to imagine its statehood being revoked.

  28. A fine scotch says:

    cranky,

If you don’t mind weird weather changes, northern Colorado is awesome! Very dry, not usually too cold, far enough away from Boulder to avoid the smell of patchouli oil.

I’d avoid Greeley, though, just to save your nasal passages.

  29. sdferr says:

    “. . . Tornado Alley . . .”

Root cellars ~ very handy when they’re needed.

  30. Rob Crawford says:

    Beautiful idea!

  31. cranky-d says:

I want to go somewhere without state taxes, and where people are really in touch with their gun-clinging. I’m not sure Colorado qualifies.

Alaska is another possibility, but my sister lives in Anchorage, so that state is hers. We like to keep some separation between the siblings. Or, at least, I do.

  32. happyfeet says:

my mom used to talk about how she had loved living in Amarillo it’s very close to Palo Duro Canyon where mom and dad took us to see a musical in an outside amphitheater and there were lightnings

  33. Happyfeet, that’s one of a bunch of things I’d like to do if I lived in that part of Texas. That and Cowboy Morning.

Palo Dyuro Canyon would almost certainly become one of my favorite drives.

  34. A fine scotch says:

    cranky,

State income tax is 4.63%, so that may be a disqualifier. But there’s lots of good hunting out here (duck, goose, deer, elk, etc.). Don’t mistake Denver and Boulder (or the Vail/Aspen areas) as representative of most of Colorado.

Lots of great fishing out here too.

  35. Ernst Schreiber says:

    South Dakota, Cranky.

  36. JD says:

6-man football in Texas is a beautiful thing. All offense, all the time.

  37. cranky-d says:

I’m also looking for a place that has a lot of universities, if possible, as teaching is a profession I could always fall back on. I know I’m making it difficult.

I’ve been to South Dakota. I don’t see myself writing software for anyone there, and that’s what I do for a living now.

  38. happyfeet says:

I miss living in America Mr. McGehee someday i’m gonna move back there

  39. Lubbock is home to Texas Tech. Does that help, Cranky?

  40. cranky-d says:

Lubbock will go on the list.

  41. bh says:

I was going to mention a couple places in Oklahoma like Stillwater but then I saw that their local and state taxes are actually higher than the national average. That surprises me.

  42. bh says:

And now I’m going to be sucked into this page for a week.

  43. sdferr says:

Zen” is the word commonly used in the West Wing.

    Figures.

  44. steph says:

Denton is the home of Brave Combo, the world’s greatest dance band. I’d link, but I can’t so that from work … http://www.brave.com/bo/

  45. steph says:

    or, maybe I can…hmmm

  46. Lubbock will go on the list.

Lubbock is a fine place to live. Been here for just over a year now.

  47. Wes says:

T for Texas, T for Tennessee.
Don’t forget the Volunteer state. No income tax & plenty of concealed carry permits to go around. Despite how it seems around here lately, we actually have very few retarded guitar professors, so don’t let the one scare you off.

  48. JD says:

Wes, you have Willie the racist hilljack skin flute player Yelverton, which almost immediately excludes TN.

  49. Ernst Schreiber says:

“Zen” is the word commonly used in the West Wing.

As in “Virst, ve vill destroy ze economy, zen ve vill take ofer ze heath care, zen…”

  50. Ernst Schreiber says:

I’ve been to South Dakota. I don’t see myself writing software for anyone there, and that’s what I do for a living now.

Freelance or better yet, start your own company.

Speaking of Texas, any word on BJ, God bless him.

  53. Squid says:

I’m kinda hoping that the Republic of Texas quickly expands to cover everything in the Central and Mountain time zones, from the Gulf to the Arctic. That would make things really easy.

  54. Ric Locke says:

Squid, We’d be content with the 1845 borders. Small tolls on Interstates 10, 20, 30, 40, 70, and (just barely) 80, plus a reasonable excise on transhipped petroleum products, would give us plenty to operate a reasonable Government with no further taxes needed.

Unfortunately that would mean nuking Austin first. Pity to lose the gorgeous pink-granite Capitol, but you can’t make an omelet, etc.

    Regards,
    Ric

  55. serr8d says:

I want to go somewhere without state taxes, and where people are really in touch with their gun-clinging. I’m not sure Colorado qualifies.

As Wes said, there’s no state income tax. We’ve the three regions, you’ll want to avoid the west (Memphis) and the farthest-east (Knoxville is full of crazed orange-wearing sorts who speak with heavy accents). Middle Tennessee, where I’m living, is decent except for Metropolitan Davidson County (Nashville) which good people leave at their earliest convenience.

We make Barretts here in Rutherford County, so don’t let that pipsqueak little dickless weasel Willy the guitar hero scare you away.

  56. Danger says:

    “…any word on BJ,

    Mueller,

    Check http://likeadogonlysmaller.blogspot.com/ for the latest.

He also has a facebook site and JD is working on setting up a paypal for donations.

  57. Danger says:

“I want to go somewhere without state taxes, and where people are really in touch with their gun-clinging.”

    Hey Cranky,

They don’t call NW Florida the Redneck Riviera for nothing ya know!

  58. Danger says:

    Night all,

Send some CAS BJTex’s way before turnin in would ya!

  59. SDN says:

cranky, there are several colleges and universities in the Dallas area.

No, Ric, we can keep Berkeley on the Brazos. We just put up a 20 foot electric fence and declare it a nature preserve so kids can see the horrifying spectacle of the Liberal in its’ native habitat……

  60. I was going to mention a couple places in Oklahoma like Stillwater but then I saw that their local and state taxes are actually higher than the national average. That surprises me.

yep, OK and the income tax tables are retarded. I never knew anyone that got a refund. usually our Fed refund covered what we owed the state, thankfully.

  61. Wes says:

We’ve the three regions, you’ll want to avoid the west (Memphis)

    Agreed.

and the farthest-east (Knoxville is full of crazed orange-wearing sorts who speak with heavy accents).

Crazed!?! Easy now serr8d. Not all of us dressed in orange are inmates. East Tennessee has lots going for it. Plus, we don’t have Willie the racist hilljack skin flute player like middle TN.

  62. As the son-in-law of two UT alumni, I will studiously pretend not to know what Serr8d meant by that.

  63. Especially since, on my own visits to middle Tennessee, I often heard people rooting for [gag] Alabama.

blue car syndrome – here’s a comment today at Mr. P’s

    #

Dustin makes me think of a line on king of the hill once.

They were in Wichita Falls, watching the cowboys training camp, and Bobby says something like, “wow, we are in north Texas.”

And Hank says: “North Texas? More like southern Oklahoma!”

I laughed my @$$ off, but all the non-Texans around me didn’t get it. [I am not probably not really a Texan in any meaningful sense, but i lived there long enough to know the culture.]
