Jimmy Crater on the Preventable War in Gaza [Dan Collins]

Palestinian leaders from Gaza were noncommittal on all issues, claiming that rockets were the only way to respond to their imprisonment and to dramatize their humanitarian plight. The top Hamas leaders in Damascus, however, agreed to consider a cease-fire in Gaza only, provided Israel would not attack Gaza and would permit normal humanitarian supplies to be delivered to Palestinian citizens.

After extended discussions with those from Gaza, these Hamas leaders also agreed to accept any peace agreement that might be negotiated between the Israelis and Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas, who also heads the PLO, provided it was approved by a majority vote of Palestinians in a referendum or by an elected unity government.

Rockets were the only way to bring attention to their humanitarian crisis?  And when, Jimmy, did these rocket firings begin?  When did they cease?  I have to say, those are some complicated provisos.

He continues:

And this fragile truce was partially broken on Nov. 4, when Israel launched an attack in Gaza to destroy a defensive tunnel being dug by Hamas inside the wall that encloses Gaza.

A defensive tunnel, eh?  Just what was the defensive function of this tunnel?

After 12 days of “combat,” the Israeli Defense Forces reported that more than 1,000 targets were shelled or bombed. During that time, Israel rejected international efforts to obtain a cease-fire, with full support from Washington. Seventeen mosques, the American International School, many private homes and much of the basic infrastructure of the small but heavily populated area have been destroyed. This includes the systems that provide water, electricity and sanitation. Heavy civilian casualties are being reported by courageous medical volunteers from many nations, as the fortunate ones operate on the wounded by light from diesel-powered generators.

Those quotes around “combat”–what would you say that it is?  And what are the terms of these proposals that the Israelis have rejected?  Perhaps the Israelis can subject them to a public referendum.

UPDATE: Jules Crittenden has plenty more (and thanks for the link).

I like how shooting thousands of rockets isn’t considered “breaking a truce”.

I’ll remind you that Carter also once remarked that the American Revolutionary War was an “unnecessary war”.

At least he’s a consistant fool. I apologize again for my home state.

  2. N. O'Brain says:

“Jimmy Carter?! He’s history’s greatest monster!”

  3. Sdferr says:

Those diesel light generators fairly glow in the infrared bands alright, but I wouldn’t want to do surgery with that light.

  4. MarkD says:

Jimmy Crater (why do I think the misspelling is intentionsal?) is the worst American President of my lifetime, which includes Nixon. He is the worst ex-president ever.

I consider my absentee ballot delivered too late to vote against him a tragedy. The man is a stain with no redeeming qualities at all, now that his shoddy carpentry skills have been exposed. Were it in my power, I’d have the Navy revoke his commission and scuttle any vessel named after him.

He can’t be gone soon enough.

  5. BJTexs says:

So let me get this straight: When faced with an “imprisonment” run by the very authorities that the citizens voted in and a humanitarian crisis that is constantly a egregiously maintained by those same elected, the proper response is to lob missiles willy nilly, deliberately targeting civilian areas.

Up is down … black is white … Paris Hilton is a moral compass for teenage girls.

Jimmy Carter has completely lost his mind.

  6. MarkD says:

I can spell “intentional” when I’m not enraged.

  7. Spies, Brigands, and Pirates says:

    their imprisonment

Umm.. okay. The Gaza Strip has an area of 360 km^2.

Monaco has an area of 1.9 km^2.

Ibiza has an area of 220 km^2.

Both have a similar climate to Gaza, yet both are considered prime vacation turf, not “prisons”.

Gaza could be the same, ‘ceptin’ nobody wants to party in a place where their head might get hacked off with a machete.

You made your own Hell, guys. Enjoy it.

  8. serr8d says:

“Israel launched an attack in Gaza to destroy a defensive tunnel being dug by Hamas…”

    Hamas dug it for themselves..

  9. Fred Beloit says:

Now, now, let’s not be too harsh on this peanut patriot. He just made a little mistake when he launched a military attack of unprecedented frailness against Iran when Iran was graciously entertaining some American tourists who might have overstayed their welcome just a bit.

  10. Spies, Brigands, and Pirates says:

BTW, when I was looking up those numbers, I was amused to learn that, according to Wikipedia, the Mediterranean has a “typical Mediterranean climate”.

    You don’t say.

  11. Spies, Brigands, and Pirates says:

To my eternal shame, I voted for that guy.

I was very young and stupid.

  12. BJTexs says:

Well I suppose I should thank Jimmuh for acknowledging that random missile attacks into Israel have “traumatized” the residents of the border cities. Lost in this little exercise in moral equivalence are the following two points:

    1) Hamas continues to make it a policy goal to “drive Israel into the sea.” Hell it’s part of their charter!
    2) Hamas consistently lies about accepting ceasefires and peace agreements, using the talking time to smuggle more weapons just before they back away from peace.

  13. Dan Collins says:

    Rockets? Those were emergency flares.

  14. Sdferr says:

For the last two days Israel has taken on itself a cease fire for three hours from 1pm to 4pm, during which time they create a safe corridor for humanitarian supplies to move into Gaza and also give a respite to the residents of Gaza to go out of their homes to get food, water and the like. What does Ham-ass do?

They use the time to peacefully set up and fire rockets into Israel.

  15. serr8d says:

To my eternal shame, I voted for that guy.

Yeah. Me too. Worse, I voted for Gore for senator, twice. Back when he was anti-abortion and anti-gun control. Before his head became inflamed..

  16. Sdferr says:

Israel looks to be making war on the sexually repressed among its Hamas enemies (lifted from the Muqata)

9:37 AM (IsraelNN.com) Last night a Hamas technician apparently got bored and viewed an erotic satellite channel, which accidentally was aired on the terrorist organization’s Al Aqsa television station, according to The Middle East Media Research Institute (MEMRI).

    Heh.

  17. BJTexs says:

Exactly, Sdferr. Not to mention the fact that they consistently set those rockets up near high casualty potential civilian targets.

    Buncha evil cowards.

  18. Spies, Brigands, and Pirates says:

That’s why I can’t get too angry at the younger Obama-heads. Most of them will grow up, get real jobs, start families, and become embarrassed.

I reserve my scorn for the Ayers types, who never seem to grow up.

True story: My parents, being full-on Spirit-filled Godbags, were all set to cast their vote for the Goober Man back in ’76. But upon reaching the polls, they found themselves pulling the lever for Ford instead.

I thought “defensive tunnel” was another name for “vagina”.

  23. Sdferr says:

I find myself wondering whether the Israelis haven’t got lots of little “tunnel rat” robots (something along the lines of the bomb detection and disposal robots) to send in after the underground Ham-ass scurriers, snoop out the lay of the below-land and maybe even deliver little surprise packages to their inhabitants.

Carter is a Joooooooo hater, and always has been; regardless of his phony demeanor as President and peacemaker in chief!

And these days, he’s absolutely senile…

    Ah, the soul of discretion…

I know the left hates Boooooooosh!, but Carter was a much larger failure than Bush will ever come to be seen…

  26. Neo says:

It can also be said that Usama bin Laden (UBL) inspired a generation of young Americans (“Generation Kill”) to take up arms against idiot Muslin zealots who think it sport to kill non-combatants in their quest for sexual adequacy with the mythical 72 (re-virginating) virgins.

In the process, UBL made the US public more complacent to accept the Israeli operation in Gaza as the price to be paid when dealing with those who indescriminately fire rockets into civilian (non-combatant) areas.

This then goes to prove that UBL is responsible for the Israeli attack of Gaza.

Just like Jimmy Carter’s proclaimed expertise in determining the offensive/defensive nature of Palestinian tunnels, Progressives in the West have “reimagined” comments made by Dov Weisglass in the year 2004 as prima facie evidence that Israel is enacting a campaign of ethnic cleansing against the otherwise noble people of Gaza.

  31. AJB says:

Rockets were the only way to bring attention to their humanitarian crisis?

Well, I suppose they could just starve to death peacefully like good little Untermenschen. After all, when a super-power backed nation-state utilizes its control of your territory’s borders to enact a savage economic blockade of your people, peaceful methods of resistance should suffice.

  32. Rob Crawford says:

Oh, look, another of the reprobates chimes in.

  33. Pablo says:

After all, when a super-power backed nation-state utilizes its control of your territory’s borders to enact a savage economic blockade of your people, peaceful methods of resistance should suffice.

Gaza has a border with Egypt. yet the vast majority of supplies (food, fuel, medical equipment, etc…) comes in through Israel. And that border would be open if not for the Palestinian tendency to send splodeydopes through it.

Why is there an Egyptian blockade?

  34. Sdferr says:

Funny, I haven’t heard of any claims of starvation taking place in the West Bank among the Palestinians living there. I wonder what the difference between Gaza and Hebron might be?

  35. Pablo says:

And how, exactly, does rocketing Israel advance Gaza’s cause? It seems to be backfiring.

  36. Carin says:

#33 is why I stalk Pablo.

  37. Fred Beloit says:

Ah the sweet sounds of an a–hat in the mourning from AJB. AJB, did you know that one of the borders blockaded is that with Egypt? AJB, did you know that beaches on the Med are quite posh and thriving in places other than those whose inhabitants are only concerned with killing their civilian neighbors. Maybe if the Gazans spent some time trying to make a living things would get better for them.

  38. Carin says:

My my … why won’t they let the Palestinians in? Oh the inhumanity.

  39. Pablo says:

Yes Carin, those are some horrible Zionists, aren’t they?

“The Egyptians will tell Hamas bluntly that the old self-restraint manner is over and that Egyptian security guards have been given orders to open fire on any Palestinians trying to cross the border”

While Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak gave orders to allow Palestinians to cross, the wounding of Egyptian soldiers by Palestinians strained relations with Hamas and after reclosing the border, Egypt’s foreign minister threatened to break the legs of any Palestinian crossing illegally.

  40. Techie says:

It’s a hit and run. Facts on the ground mean nothing. AJB FEELS that Israel is enforcing a long total blockade of Gaza and nothing like reality is going to get into his way.

  41. PCachu says:

Stupid reality. It needs to learn that its proper place is subordinate to Teh Narrative(tm)!

  42. BJTexs says:

Not to mention the fact that the blockade is the only reason why Hamas is lobbing missiles into Israel because, well, they say so. Right, AJB?

    Moron.

  43. Ric Locke says:

…the blockade is the only reason why Hamas is lobbing missiles…

And, of course, the only reason the blockade is there is that the Joooooooooooos hates them some Arabs. Sixty years of attacks by armored divisions, suicide bombers, snipers, all the way down to bludgeon-wielding rapists, plus specific encouragement from “Palestinian Authorities” that the Mission is to kill Jews, doesn’t count in any way.

    Regards,
    Ric

  44. Silver Whistle says:

    Ric,

Tony Badran has an interesting take on the Hamas (and its origin in Damascus) position:

Bashar is working for the diametrically opposite objective, and seeking the full legitimization of Hamas and the undermining of Egypt, which has been crucial in blocking the opening of the Rafah crossing, and his introduction as the sole interlocutor. He called the continuing closure of these crossings an act of war, thereby justifying and supporting Hamas’s torpedoing of the truce (little surprise there, as it was all coordinated with the Iranians, including the Bahrain plot which I discussed here).

The role of Egypt in the whole position of Gaza is crucial. I have always thought that the Gaza issue was completely separate from the West Bank; this would seem to confirm it.

  45. N. O'Brain says:

Damn, AJB, I have rarely seen such a righteous cockslapping of a troll as the one you just received.

  46. Sdferr says:

Reuel Marc Gerecht wrote a similar analysis of Egypt’s position viz Iran’s plans for Hamas in the WSJ yesterday Silver Whistle.

  47. Sdferr says:

    Sandmonkey too, feels it.

  48. Silver Whistle says:

    Sdferr,

Let’s say, for the sake of argument, that Kramer/Gerecht/Badran are correct in IDF war aims, and Hamas is completely degraded. It sues for a ceasefire, on Israeli terms, and the PA is reinstalled in certain key roles, such as border control at Rafah. I still cannot see the PA/Fatah regaining control of Gaza, or a “reunited” Palestine of 2 geographically separate entities. It makes no sense to me, no matter what Tony Blair said today on the radio to the contrary. I cannot see a future for Gaza outside of Egyptian control, and that won’t happen until Hamas is exterminated by someone. Or, unless Egypt ditches Mubarak and swings towards the MB. But, I’m only a scientist.

  49. Sdferr says:

Silver W, I think it will be a long time coming that the Palestinian Arabs learn to take care of themselves and their grandchildren in any case currently on view. The Fatah as well as stinking Hamas need replacement with an organically developed, humane politics devoted to a decent society, first among themselves, as well as toward their various neighbors. I can’t see where it begins. Hell, I can’t imagine what happens in Egypt, an ostensibly peaceable nation, after Mubarak buys the farm.

  51. Sdferr says:

In the meantime, Iran’s nuclear program wants killing, whether the Iranians undertake that particular project immediately at their own discretion (not happening of course) or the US is forced to bomb it into oblivion make little difference to me. Just make it dead.

  52. Sdferr says:

See also the shitstorm that this will stir up. Can PeBHO possibly be thought to be capable of going the full ride on such a proposal when he hints during the campaign that he isn’t even interested in finishing the US’s own projects? I doubt it.

  53. Sdferr says:

Or, you will be vulnerable to nuclear armed missile attack and damned well like it! Now eat your peas!

  54. Silver Whistle says:

    Sdferr,

I can see Fatah making a go of the West Bank – stranger things have happened. But as for Gaza, unless Hamas are completely isolated (which means Syrian/Iranian supply curtailed) and destroyed either by Israel or Egypt, there seems to me to be no endgame.

  55. BJTexs says:

The Fatah as well as stinking Hamas need replacement with an organically developed, humane politics devoted to a decent society, first among themselves, as well as toward their various neighbors.

Those “humane politics” require two differing but synergistic approaches: They both have to purge the corruption from Fatah and secularize the Hamas movement (or at least the governing.) One without the other will not work in that part of the world or anywhere else for that matter.

  56. marybel says:

I checked this morning and tonight, and I still don’t see any explanation (other than a physiological reference to the female anatomy) of a “defensive tunnel.” I love the comments here and thought maybe someone might figure out some obscure reason why the aggressors truly would need such a tunnel. I’m not being facetious. I know Carter is anti-Israel, but this tunnel comment is beyond assinine. Is it just that Jimmuh is demented?

  57. Mossberg500 says:
