Fat Chances?

“The University of Colorado’s elite cheerleading squad is about to shed some unwanted pounds,” The Daily Camera reports.

“CU’s coach, worried about injuries to male cheerleaders, has told women planning to attend next month’s tryouts that they should weigh less than 120 pounds if they hope to make the competitive team.

“The new weight guideline, for women shorter than 5-foot-7, replaces an informal 130-pound limit that Coach Travis Prior instituted last season

  1. No one would watch cheerleaders unless they were 120 pounds or less.  Can you imagine fat cheerleaders?  Ick!

  2. Mary says:

“No one would watch cheerleaders unless theywere 120 pounds or less”. Hey! Howard Stern in the house! WOOOOO!

*ahem* I’m prepared to take your comments as a joke, Matthew. After all, you must be aware that there are a number of slim, athletic women, not fat by any stretch of the imagination, who weigh more than 120 pounds, right?

Jeff, your original commentary was spot on. If female jockeys have to make a certain weight, female cheerleaders who take part in routines where they are lifted and thrown by others should also not exceed a safe weight limit for their mounts.

(And they should also bring sugar lumps and apples to practice. Nice horsey!)

  3. Matthew says:

yes it was a joke – jeff is right in what he said

  5. Tagamama says:

I agree 100 percent with the weight limit for cheerleaders, and applaud the sensible alternative wording that anticipates challenges to Title IX guidelines (setting a limit that male cheerleaders can safely lift).

What is it with Americans?  No human being should weigh over 200 pounds; no young woman under twenty should weigh over 135.  In youth you should be slim and fit.  Who wants to see heifers at a party?  No one.  No wonder online dating is popular—who wants to be seen with a blubberbutt?  And I wish the American public would quit apologizing for being so ignorant about nutrition that they think that low-carbohydrate bread and sugarless cookies can exist in the real world.  Gag!

I am SO disgusted with all this talk of dieting and eating disorders and shrinking and bloating and barfing and no-carb and low-carb and carbs-only and super-size and regular size and large and extra large and 1X, 2X, 3X and beyond-X and 12-year-old girls with 36D breasts and the mothers who don’t think it’s abnormal—the dad must be in hiding until the brat is out of the house—and excuses for eating ALL THE FRIGGIN TIME and safe snacks and 6 mini-meals a day and weight loss shakes and weight loss magazines and baby boomers who are old and wrinkly and bald and getting fatter and fatter but refuse to move out of their sectional sofas or barcaloungers or designer beach chairs and saggy 50-year-old women who want to eat, drink, and act like they’re 15 so that Hollywood produces deluxe loser movies like Something’s Gotta Give which should have been called You’ve Gotta Screw Lose or Something’s Giving Out (and It Ain’t Me Babe) and all these diet journals where no weight is lost because after one day, sometimes one hour, the doorbell rings or someone comes to the door or the baby wakes up or the toddler WANTS SOME ATTENTION or it’s time to BABYSIT for the GRANDKIDS or DH (dear hubby) comes home with a pizza and it’s Friday or the ISP went down and so the diet is ruined because of all these things but that’s all right because there’s always tomorrow, there’s always Weight Watchers or Atkins or South Beach or eDiets or the Zone or Dr. Phil or Bob Greene or SlimFast again and again and again, and this is all because baby boomers do not and have never understood the concept of delayed gratification, the word “no,” or “you can’t.”

  6. Melanie says:

How about turning it around and make the men lift weights so they can toss, catch and carry the women who weigh 130?  I never understood the concept of male cheerleaders anyway!

  7. Jessica Frazier says:

um yes i think that there is a difference btwn fat cheerleaders and thick ones cus i am 5’3 and weight 140 and i have a big chest and a big ass so there is a difference! i think the weight limit is stupid cuz some of those skinny anoerexic bitches can’t cheer its all about the talent!

  8. K. Harris says:

I think that is the stupidest rule I ever heard.  I’m a cheerleader, and I weigh way more than 120 pounds, but we are an all girl squad.  If some of the girls weigh more than 120 lbs., just don’t let the guys pick them up.

  9. Kourtney says:

Are you kidding what ever happened to muscle weighs more then fat. I am a base on my ALL GIRL squad and I know some of the girls I base weigh more then that and I have based some of the girls that weigh that and it all depends on there muscle and if they can make themself be lighter and also hello boys on the football, baseball, and wrestling teams lift weigh more then 120 pounds in the weight room.. I mean come on now thoughen up MEN.

  10. Katie says:

THIS IS RIDICULOUS!! I am a cheerleader, and it doesnt matter what you weight, I am a base and a flyer.  I have based a 130 lb. girl and she weighed like she was 100! And the exact opposite.  I am not the smallest flyer, but people tell me i feel like .

  11. Romana says:

i weigh 114 and i’m 5’2” and no joke i look like im a size 16. it all comes down to muscle and how you’re athleticly abilitated. i think they shoudl first take a lok at the girls then ask them how much they weigh. But i gotta admit the only thing you really need to do to get your weight down with out being retarted and getting a an eating disorder, is just to not snack and don’t fill yourself up at the table…and please just stay away form the potato chips. you’d be surprised at what good foods are under 100 caleries a serving. just read the lables,if somethign is over 120 caleries per reosonalble serving. just stay away from it, your just being scammed of your figure. and people need to go otu and extersize, if you go out every night and lightly jog 3 miles you’ve just burned 880 caleries….whutta break thorough. just dont ve lazy. i promise you’ll slim down!

  12. kristen says:

cheerleaders dont have to be completely skinny its the ability that counts….. who ever says all cheerleaders have to be skinny needs to stop and think its no about weight its about being able to do want you need to do to make the team.

  13. Jenny says:

Hmmm,I am 5’3 and 120 pounds but most of it is muscle.I am wondering if I should lose some weight,my stomach is flat with a little bit of fat,is that normal? I don’t feel very heavy.

  14. amber says:

  16. gabby says:

  17. Deva says:

  18. Katelyn says:

I think there should be atleast 2 or 3 “fat” cheerleaders b/c who is going to help out the hurt guys??

  19. Brianna says:

  20. Brianna says:

  25. jessica says:

WTF?This is the most ridiculous thing i have read…..we live in a male-dominated world where girls/women are just eye candy to the males.

  26. samantha lewandowski says:

*kay im 15 years old and im a JV cheerleader on my squad but im really wanting to get better this year so next year at tryouts i can blow them away and make it on the varsity squad. But im 5’4 and i weigh 134lbs i know im bigger then im suppose to be and i really want to be a flyer. what are your suggestions for me??

  27. Katie says:

Well, over all, cheerleaders are performers. And to get better reviews, cheerleaders need to be the best they can be. I think that as long as they are lean and muscular, they’re okay. But a cheerleader should not be fat. Conditioning is part of being a cheerleader, you need to be in shape. And let’s face it, if there’s a skinny cheerleader with the same amount of talent as a fat one, who are people gonna pay attention to? The skinny one.

  28. Lindsey says:

wow… i think all this talk about being to fat to be a cheerleader is STUPID!! I’m a varsity cheerleader at my high school and our JV and Varsity are all girls but we are all different some are bigger (not fat) and some are skinny, but if we werent all good then we wouldnt have made it, it shouldnt matter what you weigh as long as you have the talent and commitment then its all good…

  29. lindsey says:

okay! for one, a flyer that wieghs like 115 can seem like she wieghs 150! trust me! iv single based an extension with a girl like that, and if they arent tight, there not hallowed out, and there not standing on the balls of there feet, then they weigh a hell of alot more then they do when they step on a scale. where as you put a girl in the air that wieghs 130 and knows what the hell she is doin, she feels alot lighter then the girl that wieghs 115!! like others have said its about talent not how anoerexic cheerleaders can get.

oh yeah and about the people dont like to watch fat cheerleaders…. well no shit but they dont like seeing anoerexic girls that look like there about to break in half they would rather watch muscle toned in shape girls that look healthy doesnt mean you have to weigh less then 120! i am 5’6 and i weigh 135 but let me tell you i can flip and jump and fly better then a lot of those skinny stick girls!

and dont take it offensivly if your really skinny you could still be an awesome flyer but at the same time i dont think that you have to weight less that 120! well thanks for reading

  30. Danielle says:

hey, well, like most of you i too am a cheerleader- and have a similar point of view- i really do believe that it comes down to strength.  Last year we had a girl on my team that was about 100 lbs but when she was up there she did not push off or carry her weight and so it began to get very heavy- as opposed to me, who i weighed 130 and i have much muscle- thanks to weight training and track- and pushed off so hard there was no weight- i was told it is much easier to base a person who pushes off than someone who doesn’t.  I also think though that there is a weight limit that puts the bases at risk of injury.

  31. Erin says:

Most of the girls on my squad are really muscular. I’m sure they weigh more than 120 lbs. Muscle ways more than fat. They based our coach, and she is like pure muscle. She is like 145. I think these boys need to toughen up a bit.

  32. Tianna says:

soooo after reading all these articles…i decided i was against the weight limit. there are way to many disadvanages and it shouldn’t be about weight or the way people look. I saw this past weekend a girl 2 times the size of me take home the jump-off at our competition. and i’m 5’0 110 lbs. Im not even a flyer im a base!!! sooooo looking at some of the comments its already creating controvery to some other cheerleaders that now they think they need to loose weight. this is some crazy bullshit!

  33. Sarah says:

u know what guys, it really isn’t about the weight problem, i mean, i was a cheerleader and i know that they dont care how fat you are, there was this one girl who ws 275 lbs, and we loved her!!! all you really have to do is slmile, i am not kidding u!!! if u smile and smile and tryouts, ur chances of making the team is alot greater. so if u think u r 2 fat to be a cheerleader, ur wrong. they will let u on, trust me, if they didn’t let u on bcuz ur fat, they could get fired, and they know that, so plz, get out there and know that u can do anything!!! (just remember to smile!!!)
