If only the wingnuts would stop it with their fear mongering and HATE…

This kind of thing wouldn’t be happening.

Meantime, the President-elect, forced to clean up the failed policies of the last 8 years, has condemned the latest round of terror attacks and offered to help the Indian government.

Missing from his statement, however, was this:

We must […] engage […] in the more difficult task of understanding the sources of such madness. The essence of this tragedy, it seems to me, derives from a fundamental absence of empathy on the part of the attackers: an inability to imagine, or connect with, the humanity and suffering of others. Such a failure of empathy, such numbness to the pain of a child or the desperation of a parent, is not innate; nor, history tells us, is it unique to a particular culture, religion, or ethnicity. It may find expression in a particular brand of violence, and may be channeled by particular demagogues or fanatics. Most often, though, it grows out of a climate of poverty and ignorance, helplessness and despair.

Too bad. The Indian government could certainly use such a lesson in humility at about this time, what with their insistence on moving toward a thriving capitalist society — with all the inequity (and iniquity) that entails…

Maybe after they get the blood cleaned up.

Timing, you see.

And Jeff, don’t just first — empty the frigging magazine!

  11. slackjawedyokel says:

    shoot first, that is.

    Dang it.

  12. Seth Williams says:

It never ceases to amaze me the magical thinking on the left that informs them that, hey, all people are basically good and if, gosh darn it, we just sit and talk about feelings all this unpleasantness will go away. The fact is, some people are bad, some are even born that way…and they won’t change unless they want to change.

It’s not wrong to want to try to convince people to be decent, but it’s incredibly naive to believe that you don’t need a back up plan. It’s also incredibly naive to ignore basic human nature, which seems to be the modus operandi of the left.

It has been a basic tenent of Marxism/Socialism/Big Brother that they can perfect Man. 100 million dead from the effort still hasn’t shaken that belief.

  15. All people are basically good.

If you pour enough gravy on them

  16. AJB says:

I hope this doesn’t lead American conservatives to start embracing the ultra-nationalist Hindutva movement simply because they’re up against Islamist terrorism. That would be like embracing Putin simply because Chechen terrorists are assholes.

Keep in mind that the Hindu nationalists have no qualms about killing Christians in droves. They are not a very good ally to have.

  17. B Moe says:

I would be more worried about the left courting those guys, AJB, that would be a much better fit.

  18. Ric Locke says:

It’s not wrong to want to try to convince people to be decent…

That’s not the problem. That’s not even the right approach to the problem.

The problem is the definition of “decent”. By their own lights and definitions, Islamic terrorists are one hundred percent decent, not to mention caring and responsible. By that definition, having “people” around who aren’t Islamic is a vile offense against God and Nature, and wiping them out is the only just, decent, and proper thing to do. Supposed “Islamic” people who are willing to tolerate and work with non-Islamics are, by that definition, worse than the infidels themselves.

That attitude is not universal among Muslims, but it is inherent in the teachings and pops up often enough to justify the sobriquet “typical”. Trying to “discuss” things and revealing feelings in order to convince such folks to “act decent” simply confirms their prejudices. They are “acting decent”. “Decent” is what they’re proudest of.

Louis L’Amour heroes are fond of noting that “There’s no stopping a man who knows he’s in the right and keeps on coming.” Those who are somewhat more sophisticated may realize that this is not entirely a positive principle.

    Regards,
    Ric

I’m not surprised. Obama’s commitment to religiousity was/is mercenary, evidenced by his first tossing Wright under the bus then the last three weeks of doing his ‘praying’ for wisdom and guidance at the gym.

The man is unable to see “evil”.

    Ugly enough for you, Jeff?
Happy about that “pallin’ around with terrorists” calumny Palin laid on the low information voters now?
It is Our Friend Pakistan’s Kashmiri separatists allied with w/e evil scumbags they could did dig up.

  35. Nishi_Jenkins says:

    You wish it was AQ.
So you could start the scare tactics up again.

  36. Darleen says:

shut up, Kate, your studied stupidty is especially grating this morning.

  37. Dan Collins says:

Yeah, Kate. Today’s a day set aside for you to irritate your family and loved ones.

  38. Nishi_Jenkins says:

C’mon darleen, lets see your response to Hertzberg.
That is, if your are smart enough to be able to read, of course.

  39. B Moe says:

Happy about that “pallin’ around with terrorists” calumny Palin laid on the low information voters now?

I don’t know, Darleen, trying to watch Nishfong tie this to Palin could be highly entertaining.

  40. Nishi_Jenkins says:

But it is so rich with opportunity here.

But that is enough lowhanging fruit for one day.
    tah for now.

    Slines.

  41. Darleen says:

    Katefuckwit

Hertzie begins with a lie and a smear and goes from there. I understand in your dedication to amoralness you love anything that underlines your bigotry but that doesn’t make it anymore than it is.

  42. Jeff G. says:

I don’t have the first clue what Nishi is on about.

Bill Ayers was a domestic terrorist. That’s not even in dispute. He wasn’t convicted (“guilty as hell, free as a bird”); his wife was — as were others in his organization. Comrades in arms from his group blowed themselves up in advance of blowing up soldiers and their dates. He wrote manifestos and fronted for an organization that bombed government buildings and intended to wage a violent asymmetrical terror offensive again US government interests. He participated in Days of Rage — destroying property, terrorizing neighborhoods.

He has been rehabilitated by lefties who consider him something of a cult hero.

What any of this has to do with Palin is a mystery.

The above quote from Obama came in response to 911. I’m wondering why he isn’t asking the same questions of the Indian government — if they somehow didn’t bring this on themselves for not having understood the “climate of poverty and ignorance, helplessness and despair” that nurtures their tormentors.

ROOT CAUSES, PEOPLE! WHAT WE NEED IS DIALOGUE!

  43. Jeff G. says:

Hertzberg: so brave, going after the Mormons. Why not take on Obama? Or the 70% of blacks who voted Yes? Or Muslims? Or Hispanics?

Fuck him. Typical liberal coward, the pussy, going after the easy mark — the one he knows is least likely to fight back in a way that can do him any real harm. Attacking Mormons only wins him the diehard support of anti-religious bigots like you, Nishi — people who consider themselves brilliant for having the “courage” to attack those whose faith in the metaphysical supersedes their faith in finite epistemology of the material.

Why don’t you talk a bit about the new Hollywood Blacklist, you budding fascist dimwit? Wrap what you consider your prodigious intellect around the cognitive dissonance of your cartoon of Palin and her “theocratic” impulses with the real-world spectacle of “liberal activists” getting people fired for holding political or religious views not sanctioned by Hollywood — as if the liberal gay rights crowd in Hollywood owns the culture, despite losing at the ballot box.

Get to it, brainiac! Chop chop.

  44. sears poncho says:

Man, that Nishi sure has that obsessed dumped girl friend vibe going.

    I know I shouldn’t but here goes:

From wikipedia, blacks made up 10% of the electorate in California, that’s 1.2 million voters. If they voted 70% for Prop 8 that’s 850,000 votes cast which would seem to be a bit more than the 550,000 vote margin for Prop 8.

I thought Nishi had some sort of degree in math. Maybe she should check her comprehension skills. So Hetrzberg may have a point but it isn’t supported by the numbers he uses. That’s OK I guess since theses articles are written for people with little or know cognitive abilities, like Nishi for example.

  45. JD says:

    Good Allah. STFU, nishit.

  46. Spies, Brigands, and Pirates says:

    Neither does she, I’d warrant.

  47. MAJ (P) John says:

Sometimes I wonder what the nishis of the owrld would do when staring at someone from the HIG, AQ, Lashkar-e-Islam, Talib, etc., as they come for them in an attack, hostage taking or the like.

Probably whine for someone like me to save them.

And the worst part is that I would still try.

  48. sears poncho says:

Yeah and “calumny” has a definition. If Palin said something false regards Obama’s relationships, then Nishi might have a point. Maybe, Ayers isn’t a terrorist because he didn’t rack up the body count he desired. I guess Ayers should be properly labeled an “incompetent terrorist.”

  49. MAJ (P) John says:

  74. Gary Rosen says:

The “truth” about Palin is that she has accomplished far more in her political career than BO ever has. BO is slicker than a tanker of light crude, gotta give him that but right now Mr. Dopeandchange is staffing up with retreads from the past 4 administrations. At least he’s not the Manchurian Candidate some of us feared – Ayers will only be Secretary of Education, not Secretary of Defense. But the only real “change” we’re getting from BO is chump change.

  75. Nan says:

Is that Nishi person off her Ritalin? Seriously, there’s something creepily frantic about her postings in this thread. From her own words, I take away the conclusion that she’s relishing the bloodshed in India. Which means she’s not just strange anymore, she’s sick.

  77. Ric Locke says:

Yes, Nan, nishi is unhinged. One of her other noms de blog is that of a (fortunately fictional) fellow whose spare-time hobby is murdering those he considers his intellectual inferiors.

For further insight into her character, have a look at this thread at Patterico. Nishi would fall firmly in the camp that requires that whatever else happens, the baby must die.

The reason Ms. Palin is a “cartoon” is that she didn’t kill her Downs Syndrome baby.

  89. Seth Williams says:

(I meant the above comment to be directed @Spiny in #15)

@Ric in #19: I disagree that trying to convince people to act decently is the wrong approach necessarily; one has to tailor one’s tactics to the opponent at hand. Some opponents are clearly implacable foes, and proven themselves to be so; for this sort of foe talk is a waste of time. However, some foes are not implacable, and should not be treated as such.

It shows a lack of seriousness on the part of the left to not identify this fact.

  93. Seth Williams says:

Hope you all had a great Thanksgiving.

  99. SarahW says:

Nishi, you are a little too hung up on labels of Jihadi organizations. It’s the jihadism, Nishi, of radical islamists which include AQ, but also AQ like groups. The targets here (Jews, Americans, British) show “far Jihad” was the task at hand, and it’s the radical islamist agenda of gaining submission to its notions of Muslim supremacy and restoration of the Caliphate that is our enemy, not exclusively AQ. And they should be your enemy too, and you should fear and fight them, too; you more than anyone here, if your standard of good means love of liberty and pursuit of knowlegde and advancement of scientific exploration.

Christians might speak up for notions you find ridiculous or obsolete, but Jihadi’s do the same and worse, and will cut off your head to get rid of you and your complaining.

  101. wesley says:

    “who are they,”

  102. Ric Locke says:

#91 Seth: What I am saying is that the whole “act decent” question is a red herring that leads us away from any possible resolution.

The number of people who are deliberately evil is very small, perhaps even zero discounting insanity. Everybody involved is “acting decent” within their own definitions, even where “decent” == “gaining power for themselves”. Framing it that way is stupid and counterproductive, because it leads directly and inevitably to the “moral equivalence” fallacy and nowhere else.

Some people’s “decent” is directly opposed to that of others’ definition. When that’s the case, the two are at best opponents, at worst enemies. How they resolve the differences may differ case by case, but framing it as “decent” or “virtuous” behavior vs. the opposite will not help in any way in the resolution.

    Regards,
    Ric

  103. Seth Williams says:

cynn: again with the utter lack of seriousness.

You seem to suggest that we shouldn’t consider AQ an implacable foe because they haven’t crippled us yet…? Seriously? Is it your honest contention that we shouldn’t take them seriously because we aren’t bloodied enough?

And if your answer to the above is “no, that’s not my contention”…then what, pray tell, is your point?

  104. guinsPen says:

    happy thanksgiving, slines

    Likewise, fline.

And to the PW community, at large, as well.

    You know who you are.

  105. Seth Williams says:

Ric, I’ll confess I’m not terribly interested in alternate defintions of “decent”. I don’t get off on cultural relativism, as I think the notion of basic human rights and simple decency transcend cultural boundries. I believe those notions are universal and inherant to the human exsistance and easily deduced with common reason.

My point is simply that not all foes are implacable ones, and it is preferable to engage the placable ones in dialog first because we are decent. The implacable ones? Typically easily identified, and should be dealt with appropriately.

I could care less if AQ, for example, consider themselves decent, most people the world over don’t.

  106. cynn says:

Seth Williams: Al Quaeda is a foe but there are many others.

  107. wesley says:

    All Muslim.

  108. guinsPen says:

    Likewise, fline.

  110. Seth Williams says:

Yes, cynn, and an implacable one at that. So we should respond to them in kind.

And the fact that there are other foes proves…what, exaclty? It just proves that the world is a dangerous place, and really doesn’t speak to the issue of whether or not we should try to convince them to be more empathic.

  111. Ric Locke says:

Seth: I think we’re actually in the same chapter, if not on the same page. It’s a matter, as usual, of definitions. A placable foe is an opponent — someone with different goals and aspirations, but one you have something in common with, like an opposing football team. It may be possible to talk it out and compromise to reach a mutually-agreeable solution, and it may not; situations differ.

An implacable foe is an enemy, and enemies are either defeated or surrendered to; there are no other options. The goal when dealing with an enemy is to reduce them to impotence or nonexistence, keeping in mind that the enemy is trying the same thing on you.

Non-militant Muslims are opponents. Islamists, especially the Waha’abbi strain, are enemies whether they participate in “al-Qaeda” or not. If we defeat the Islamists, we will still be in a contest with other Muslims, who will still want to propagate Islam; but we can handle that. If we don’t defeat the Islamists, both we and the non-militant Muslims lose.

    Ric

  115. I’d love to play poker with Nishi. You can always tell what she fears most politically because she always jumps right in and attacks it without so much as a how-do-you-do.

    1. Mumbai attackers not being Al Queda. An AQ attack anywhere in the world undermines her conservatives are over reacting to terrorism to the point of being irrational meme. It’s been quiet enough on the international terror front that the left has been trying to play the argument that there is no war on terror, just G. W. Bush blowing up brown people. An AQ attack—on brown people no less—fucks all of that up.

    2. Sarah Palin. I have to admit, I’ve never seen the left so discombobulated by a conservative politician. Even Reagan didn’t get this far under their skins. Nishi is utterly terrified of Sarah Palin. (I’m even empathetic to her terror, since usually when I encounter such fear it is coming from a child.) I’m not sure, but I think it’s Palin’s authenticity. The left knows their authenticity. Obama is authentic because he’s black, obviously. Palin’s authenticity is the whole package, her background, her political success as an outsider, all of it. I think what scares them the most is how many people respond to her authenticity with familiarity and good faith, which means she is capable of beating the left at their own game. The left hates that shit.

  116. Geo W says:

Well, late to the post but gotta kick in my 2 cents.

I think China is involved. It all may be carried out by and through AQ in general but I think there’s some background funding and/or logistics and/or planning with Chinese intelligence. This attack, which is still continuing as I digest and type, is an attempt to bloody the newly rising power in the coalition of democracies, which has recently entered a stronger alliance with the US, has taken a bit of the lead against the Somali pirates, and hopes to counterbalance Chinese moves in the Tibetan plateau which is beoming more militarized and the Indian Ocean where China is building naval bases.

Remember that Mumbai is like their New York, this is like a 9/11 in its audacity and intent to demoralize the nation and delegitimize the Indian government. And remember China was/probably still is a key supporter of the Taliban, they prop up the tyrants in Burma or whatever the hell they call it now and which is where those new naval bases are going in, share a border with Kashmir, don’t lilke how India hosts the Dalai Lama, keep the Sudanese in the Darfur genocide business, have joined Russia in protesting the missle defense shield, and are starting to pal around with Hugo Chavez. Oh, and they poison our kids and pets.

Therefore I strongly suspect there is another geopolitical level as to why and how this attack was carried out, overlaying the good old fashioned jihad motivation which is perhaps flavored with Kashmiri separatism.

Kind of a downer, I say. A new salvo in the war against freedom. The plot thickens.

And yet . . . Happy Thanksgiving everybody!

    We had FOUR pies!!1!

  118. geoffb says:

“My question has always been: who are they, and when do we declare war?”

    With #118 in mind,

    There is your answer cynn,

    Enemies.
Radical Islamists including the Wahhabi and AQ. The Marxist/Socialist governments (China, Russia, Venezuela, Cuba, and others) that prop-up and otherwise support the Islamic terrorists.

You can basically say that America has always been at war with thugs. Thug governments and privately operating thugs world wide.

It is not because we are a warlike people, we aren’t. It is because we have this belief that all humans should live in freedom. That makes our very existence a mortal threat to those who would rule others through coercion and terror.

I, for one, like having those people for enemies. It is a badge of honor that Americans should wear proudly. We are hated and despised by thugs. That is much better, infinitely better than having them love you or worse you loving them.

  119. cynn says:

So the thugs in your own country don’t count. It’s only the ones you can obliterate that matter.

  120. geoffb says:

Thugs in our own country are either a law enforcement matter, or are handled in person if the threat is up front, immediate, and personal which is why concealed carry is a good thing. Another type need to be voted out of office. We most likely disagree on who they are but that is the nature of politics in a free society.

As for whether they count, the events of 1860 to 1865 show that they do count.

Now I’ve pulled a 10 hour shift today that was supposed to be an 8 hour but got changed at the 7.5 hour mark. Sure they do cynn. It’s why we have police and courts and as a final last ditch resort we, as a population, are armed.
The left, you guys, seem to have a difficulty in recognizing who the thugs are. I know you would like th label Bush/Cheney as thugs, but militant islamist were after us long before them. And to give credit where credit is due the current administration has done a credible job of keeping them off our shores.
I just want the bad ones obliterated, cynn. I’m fine with all the rest even if they do hate me.
    Infadel, and proud of it.

British-born Pakistanis were among the Mumbai terrorists, Indian government sources claimed today, as the death toll rose to more than 140.

Two Britons were among eight gunmen captured by commandos after they stormed two hotels and a Jewish centre to free hostages, the city’s chief minister said.

Three arrested at the Taj Mahal have been officially identified as a Pakistani national and two Indians. Another is reported to be a Mauritian national.

A previously unknown Islamic group, Deccan Mujahideen, has claimed responsibility for the attacks but terror experts believe is is linked to Al Qaeda.

It is known that dozens of British-born Pakistanis have travelled to Pakistan to train in its camps in recent years.

One security source said recently: ‘The camps are full and many of the people inside are Brits.’

  162. Ric Locke says:

Mr. Pink, Kate is clearly unhinged. “Insanity” is when one’s mental model of the Universe doesn’t match reality, and she’s that in spades.

Her fundamental disconnect is this: She wants access to an unlimited number of human fetuses, which she proposes to blend down to a fine pureé from which she (or rather her employers) will distil an Elixir of Immortality. She is not able to pretend, even to herself, that this represents a morally or ethically acceptable thing to do, but she lusts for the Elixir (and the recognition attendant upon being the one who provides it) with a desire that attains the level of “mania”. She therefore spends her days attacking what she perceives as the sources of the ethical and moral rules that deny her her heart’s desire, as if she could annihilate the distance between New York and San Francisco by outlawing automobiles, trains, and 747s.

Unfortunate, really, but she falls into the category of people one should theoretically find pitiable and sympathetic, but cannot because they’re so bloody annoying.

  163. Spies, Brigands, and Pirates says:

We authorize the use of military force against Al Qaeda – which we have done. This permits the use of force and in such kind that is appropriate.

Declarations of war may be full and formal, such as against Spain in 1898, or less than full and formal, such as the undeclared naval war with France, 1798-1800. Al Qaeda and all of its affiliates and allies are enemies of the United States. We are at war with them, and may attack them when and where we deem appropriate, with such force as we deem appropriate, until Congress determines otherwise.

This isn’t the first time this nation, or any nation, has been in a Quasi-War with a non-state actor, and it will not be the last time. The protocols are already there, if there was only the will to use them without a sob-a-thon in the media.

For example, in the earlier thread did you see where she continued to deny that the Nazis practiced eugenics? When that simple fact is acknowledged in the sources from that time and by historians afterwards.

I don’t think Nishi is evil, where evil is defined as one who desires to be cruel in the face of morally knowing better. No more so than a black widow is evil. It’s a selfishism thing, for someone who obviously lacks some of the basic emotions..empathy, sympathy, grace, a sense of noble purpose..usually employed when dealing with fellow humans. It’s as if she looks at a group or a class (or an area defined by a bell curve) of peoples, mene, mene, tekel, upharsin, and decides that that particular group doesn’t deserve her quarter.

If given access to the levers of power or to the crucibles of edgy science that she so clearly desires then maybe she could do things that are morally repugnant, and approach evil. I think most scientists (or at least some) would sniff out her extremism and prevent any of that. Or I at least would hope so.

Ric, your comment deserves a bookmark. Nishi, the puppy fetus blender who would..
