America on the precipice

Fred Thompson on what’s at stake in this year’s election:

Speaking about Senator Obama, Thompson stated, “If Senator Obama is elected president with a Democrat majority in the House and Senate, this country will make a dramatic shift to the left such as we have never seen before. Senator Obama and the Democratic congress will be unrestrained and unrepentant at making our country, as never before, more divided, more dependent upon a dramatically larger and more intrusive federal government.”

.

Full length video available here.

Sure, I know Thompson made a mistake in supporting his buddy McCain on campaign finance reform. But I can’t help but think how different this election might look had we a Thompson / Palin ticket.

Watching Thompson systematically straight-talk Obama during the debates would have almost made the agony of this entire election season worth the attention I’ve given it.

But alas, the GOP, in its ever-declining wisdom, chose a statist to fight a socialist. Which, let’s face it: Rocky vs. Drago it ain’t…

Odd. I read that first as “America on the prepuce.”

  2. Sgt. York says:

Thompson/Palin….Bing! Bing! Bing! Get that man a Kewpie doll !

I voted for teh Fred, too.

Would have been a little better if he’d gotten his campaign started a little earlier, though.

  3. mcgruder says:

    I agree with JG.
Thompson always seemed like he was promoting a book rather than running for POTUS.
I’d have voted for the guy in a moment.

  4. happyfeet says:

The media squelched Fred. They really were scared of him and this was even before they pledged allegiance to Baracky.

  5. Rob Crawford says:

I explained my support for Fred thusly: “Rather King Log than King Stork.”

I stand by that. For the Obamatons, well, I hope you enjoy King Stork.

  6. SDN says:

Fred’s problem is that he hadn’t been wet-dreaming 24 hours a day about being POTUS.

  7. Curmudgeon says:

While I am sure the slanted liberal media squelched Fred, and front loaded, winner-take-all, and “open” sabotaged primaries didn’t help either, the fact remains that teh Fred should have been gearing up months in advance. The front-loaded, winner-take-all and “open” nature of many Republican primaries has been well known for years.

Anyone for leading a drive to change the primary process? Oddly, I think the Commiecrats actually have a better primary candidate selection process, more proportional. (note: I mean the primary process, not the general election process–big difference).

  8. urthshu says:

not really, curmudgeon. Hillary would’ve been the candidate if they ran our system

  9. Curmudgeon says:

urthshu: Well, I will grant you that “caucuses” are inherently a screwy process, and in my ideal world they would be abolished. However, there was a lot of discontent in the moonbat ranks with Hillary. The Obamunist won not so much because of liberal race guilt, but more importantly moonbattery in the Demunist ranks. Hillary is a rank opportunist and wrong or dangerous on many issues, but she’s at least pragmatic and honestly not a moonbat. I’d feel safer for the country if Hillary had won rather than the inexperienced fellow traveler Obamunist.

Personally, I’d like closed primaries to unfold, delegates proportional to vote by state, at the rate of two states a week, in ther order the states were admitted into the Union. A nice historical process, and it would make Pennsylvania (#2 into union) the first primary that separates the men/women from the boys/girls.

(I live in the Land Of Fruits And Nuts, I have no ties to PA whatsoever.)

Odd. I thought that was a feature.

  11. JHoward says:

    True. But understated, I think.

As all the October surprises emerge about O!, I’m struck with a foreboding about this guy that goes far beyond the usual D v. R nonsense.

This one is different. This one, the more we look, turns up a level of fraud and corruption and beyond them, a degree of collective intent that says there’s something far worse out there.

Fools were parted from their money to the tune of six tenths of a billion dollars to elect this candidate to the globe. This is an Ascension, not a representative candidate taking on the mantle. This has much more behind it. And I think the anger expressed by the usual trolls around here is even indicative of what we all know isn’t going to turn out to be anything like the best wishes about O! say here, pre-election.

A public servant with a lengthy record versus an unvetted celebrity with messianic aspirations. It’ll all seem so clear in just a few months.

  12. mojo says:

Someone really interested in service, rather than personal aggrandizement, would have spent the time to get the relevant experience on his record. Start with Alderman, then Mayor (oops!), to Governor, THEN maybe the Presidency. But he’d be in his fifties (at least) by then.

  13. Bob Reed says:

Watching Thompson systematically straight-talk Obama during the debates would have almost made the agony of this entire election season worth the attention I’ve given it.”

I must admit that this would have been entertaining. But, I can’t help but wonder how hard the MSM drumbeat about him, “being only an actor” or “despite his award winning performance…”, would have negatively influenced the moderate voters in this election.

I agree that he would have been able to speak and comport himself much better than McCain could, and I personally liked his flavor of conservatism. And, he may have had a vastly different campaign staff and strategy. But, O! & Co would have tried to paint him as BushIII just the same, and in the end the media would have complied. Plus, there’s no guarantee he would have considered Palin for a running mate…

So while we all might have enjoyed it more, I don’t know whether the results would have been much different. O! would have still enjoyed his October economic surprise, courtesy of Soros and his offshore, America hatin’, hedge fund buddies sellin the market waaaaaaaay short to influence the election, and we might never have brought Palin into the forefront of national poitics…

Which, if this season turns out badly and O! is elected, might really be one of the only good things we’ll have going for us…

  14. Wish Fred had run like he meant it.

  15. Molyuk says:

Amen. Teh Fred was my choice as well. I even donated to his campaign, which I never do. He just didn’t want it badly enough to put himself through the 2-year wringer. Can’t say I blame him for that.

  17. ThomasD says:

Fred made the mistake of trying to run the campaign everyone said they wanted, one that was deliberative and substantive.

The MSM rewarded this with a news blackout.

Sure the GOP could have chosen Thompson, if they actually wanted a fighting chance.

And the Dems could have had this thing in the bag months ago had they politely told the Messiah he’d just have to cool his jets for 8 years and then the world could be his.

But hey, No McCain means (likely) no Palinmania. No candidate unvetted by the Council on Foreign Relations means no ‘conservatives’ unmasking themselves and coming out as the committed statists they truly are.

So, at least we got that going for us.

  18. TmjUtah says:

I hope the Republican party wises up and petitions those states that don’t have closed primaries to correct their error make it so.

That ought to be the first order of business for the completely and wholly new RNC leadership team to address – first after picking out a clean refrigerator box to operate out of, that is.

I’m contributing to NRA, Utah Shooting Sports Council, Yon and Totten, Soldier’s Angels, and here… all infrequently and way too little. But the Republicans get nothing until they reform.

I have a job opportunity that may develop into a reality over the weekend. Wee bit of a commute, but the company’s central project is already funded three years out. I would be grateful for any kind thoughts anybody might direct my way.

Think it through, folks. If I’m working…I’m not commenting!

    Have a great weekend.

  19. happyfeet says:

buenos suerte Tmj! You can comment after work and anyway it would be nice for there to be good news.

  20. Spies, Brigands, and Pirates says:

Good luck on the new job, TMJ!

  21. cynn says:

I read a Vanity Fair article about Vladimir Putin today, and was struck by some parallels between the right’s claims about Obama and the author’s assertions about Putin. Putin had no early substantive role in either the KGB or government, just ambition. He openly declared his intention to seize private enterprises and institute government control.

Putin was essentially installed as president by party elites. His administration is tight and insular. He systematically seeks to erase past connections that might raise questions. If Bill Ayres dies of a polonium cocktail, you know we’re in big trouble.

  22. happyfeet says:

baracky’s way more shallow than Putin I think.

  23. Makewi says:

Congrats Tmj! I’m hoping to land something soon myself. I’m sure a few good thoughts my way wouldn’t hurt.

  24. Spies, Brigands, and Pirates says:

    You got ’em, Makewi.

You used to post as “education guy”, right?

  25. Makewi says:

Yeah. My wife got a transfer to Honolulu, so I decided to quit my job and tag along. Great place to move to, but lord does looking for work suck.

Baracky’s arrival was big news last night, got to watch his plane arrival superimposed over the top of commercials on one of the local channels. Interestingly, there are very, very few national signs up. 99% of the political signs are for the local races.

  26. Spies, Brigands, and Pirates says:

Well, there are worse places to be, I guess.

You work(ed) in ed policy/administration, or in the trenches as a teacher?

  27. Makewi says:

Nah, none of the above. I worked as a software guy. I worked with statisticians and analysts. My job mostly involved dissemination to the public.

  28. meya says:

“But I can’t help but think how different this election might look had we a Thompson / Palin ticket.”

What enthusiasm they would show. What “eloquence.”

  29. Bob Reed says:

All the best, and good luck to both TMJ Utah and Makewi. I’m pullin’, and prayin’, for both you fellas. I know that something good comin’ and is right around the corner for you guys.

Best of luck and beat wishes…

  30. Bob Reed says:

    Meya,
One thing is certain. Neither Thompson nor Palin would be transformed into the Wizard of Uhhhs any time that they had to speak extemporaneously, like O! and his plethora of hesitation markers…

Can they speak like Ivy-Leaguers; no…

Can they actually be genuine; Yes they can!

  31. alppuccino says:

Cuz what this country needs is ANOTHER lazy, intellectually uncurious Presidunce…

I sense some sarcasm there leo.

So you’re not voting for Barack – He’s just a really famous Chicago well-respected educator in my neighborhood, but whom I know absolutely nothing about even though I’ve worked with him, but it’s not my job to know the people I associate with, I mean who does that? – Obama?

  32. alppuccino says:

Clinton was curious about chubby snatch. I’ll give you that.

  33. Pablo says:

Barry ‘I didn’t know Rev. Wright was a racist’ Obama is lying, alp. The true intellectually uncurious are voting for him. Like that one there @ #32.

  34. Joe The Butt Plumber says:

    Pablo, you smell like Socialism.

  35. alppuccino says:

All of Obama’s Occidental, Columbia, and Harvard friends are dead. I’m curious about that.

  36. hoot says:

Besides the boring and utterly delusion belief that Obama is a communist (compared to what has happened in the past month wrt the bailouts? HA!) this thread had another little nugget – does Bob Reed really believe the markets are tanking due to a conspiracy to get Obama elected? Soros and foreign hedge fund managers, eh? Fucking. Awesome. Anyone else here want to support this lunacy? Or at least offer some evidence?

  37. hoot says:

Oh, I was wrong. al’s idle thoughts about Obama’s dead friends is pretty insane as well. What the hell makes you think Obama would have people killed? Man you guys are over the cliff.

  38. alppuccino says:

    So they’re not dead?

  39. alppuccino says:

    That’s a nerve right there.

  40. hoot says:

My grandmother is dead. Did I kill her, al?

  41. alppuccino says:

I don’t know hoot. You seem to think that all dead people were killed by someone. Why is that?

  42. hoot says:

um. tell us, al – why do you want to know why all of Obama’s old friends dead? Are you a doctor trying to cure cancer?

  43. alppuccino says:

So they are dead? And you’re not curious about that? Are all your college friends dead? That doesn’t sound normal.

  44. alppuccino says:

“hoot’s college friends” – good one.

  45. hoot says:

quit being coy you douchebag. how do you think they died?

  46. alppuccino says:

    Loneliness?

  47. hoot says:

and why are you talking to yourself? get your sockpuppet accounts mixed up? I figured this place is really just four or five morons with multiple accounts.

  48. alppuccino says:

I figured this place is really just four or five morons

Well, you’re here. That supports your theory.

  49. hoot says:

you got me there… why the fuck am I here?

  50. Slartibartfast says:

I’ll take “masochism” for $500, Alex.

    Yer stupid?

No. Honestly. This stuff just writes itself.

    Pinin’ for the fjords?

  53. Titonwan says:

Aaawww… now who up and woke Fred up? We gave him that trophy wife to calm him down. Now he’ll be up all night.
Seriously, why didn’t Ron Paul get the Candidacy? He had a solution to fiscal responsibility.
Ronny Ray Gun thought he was neat-o. You can’t beat THAT endorsement!…. oh, wait…
Ron Paul want’s to pull ALL of the military out of ALL the 160 bases around the WORLD!
That would stimulate the economy. Instead of buy foreign hookers, they could BUY AMERICAN! YAH HOOO!
Seriously, if Ron Paul had run, it would have been a much closer race. The chickenhawk neocons that took
over the Republican Party are a shame, and should be prosecuted… oh wait! They’re going to be!

  54. Rusty says:

quit being coy you douchebag. how do you think they died?

    pinin’ for the fjords?

    that’s better.

  55. hoot says:

Titonwan is right. An Obama Justice department, purged of political hacks, will get to work prosecuting former Bush lackeys. That’s going to hurt.

  56. McGehee says:

An Obama Justice department, purged of newly infested with political hacks

    FTFY.

  57. Pablo says:

We gave him that trophy wife to calm him down.

You did? Well, that was stupid. Not only is a hot chick a lousy way of calming a guy down, but that one? What a maroon.

  58. TmjUtah says:

quit being coy you douchebag. how do you think they died?

Funny you should ask, hoot. Police published this, but admit that they are otherwise stumped.

    Off to breakfast. Enjoy.

  59. Titonwan says:

Oh well, you never know about trophy wives. You give one to some, they get shorter and more energetic (Dennis Kucinich), others just get fat and lazy. Now, if they had given that skank Ann Coulter to ol’ Fred, he STILL BE OUT CAMPAIGNING! Never mind the primaries are over! Ge-yah! Fred’s pretty old though. If you sawed him in half and counted the rings, you’d find a lot of Sequoias are actually quite young in comparison. Shame about Dr. Paul. I knew he wouldn’t get no where near the Oval Office when he went off message and started spewing the truth. That’s political SUICIDE! Corporations told their “News” affiliates to smear him as a “kook”. It worked, natch.

  60. ThomasD says:

If Bill Ayres dies of a polonium cocktail, you know we’re in big trouble.

No, Ayers seems to have a knack for not being present when the bomb ‘accidentally’ explodes (I wonder why that is…)

If I was Joey (D-MBNA) Hairplugs I’d be eating from cans I purchased myself at a Wal-Mart in Roanoke. And never EVER turn my back on Michelle.

  61. happyfeet says:

no one really says natch I don’t think. That’s like a Mad magazine word or a Marvel Comics word but not really a word word.

  62. Titonwan says:

Natch ain’t a word? OK, how about SNATCH. mmmmmm. :)

  63. happyfeet says:

Snatch is cool … I think they even made a movie.

  64. Mark A. Flacy says:

no one really says natch I don’t think.

Yeah, he should use real words like “fonebone” and “freenacin”.

    What?

  65. B Moe says:

I wonder how it feels to be that stupid?
