I get letters, 2

Tony’s catchwrestle youtube account has, I’ve just learned, been permanently suspended. No reason given.

My suspicion is that his “competitors” — the same people who tried to smear him on the internet for years — started flagging his videos. Because there were no copyright violations, and the material is, as you have all seen, grappling instruction, no different in type from the millions of other grappling instructionals available via that portal.

So far as I can tell, there is very little I can do. I tried “contacting” youtube, but I don’t imagine that foray into submit-form hell will prove fruitful.

In 5 or so months, Tony had accumulated 400 or so subscribers to his channel, and some of his videos had been viewed over 100 thousand times already. Because his new website was never finished, he’s been getting nearly all his sales through people finding out about him on youtube.

Now, he’s once again being blocked from his trade. Any ideas?

Help needed.

I give up on the human race.

    Fuck it.

  2. Rob Crawford says:

Jesus, Jeff, that sucks. I am seriously beginning to hate the Internet, at least to the extent it’s become something like a bad rewrite of “Lord of the Flies”.

  3. Spies, Brigands, and Pirates says:

Host the videos on Amazon S3. It’s pretty cheap (although not free like YouTube, unfortunately… still way cheaper than what a standard web host will charge).

  4. cranky-d says:

I gave up on the bulk of humanity a long time ago.

  5. Dan Collins says:

Is it possible that there’s some boilerplate against “commercial use” that those guys might have gotten him on?

  6. Techie says:

In the Age of Information, those who control the Information shall control the Age.

  7. Spies, Brigands, and Pirates says:

That can’t be it, Dan, or those “Will it Blend” videos wouldn’t stay on (those are great, btw).

  8. Jeff G. says:

thor is banned. I’ll remove any comment I find by him, and any that sound like him, from now on.

    This is a guy’s livelihood.

    Here’s what youtube points to:

There are a variety of reasons an account may be terminated. The most common reason is repeated violation of the Community Guidelines or Terms of Use (including claims of copyright infringement). For severe abuse, it is possible for an account to be terminated on a first offense, such as predatory behavior or spam. Individuals whose account has been terminated are prohibited from creating new accounts. If a new account is discovered, it too may be terminated without warning.

    ****
I received no warning. Which makes me either someone engaging in predatory behavior or someone who spams. I don’t do either.

The phone listed to reach them is all automated. No way to reach a human. All you need is an account (I no longer have one) and the desire to make false allegations (which you don’t have to prove), and you can fuck with anyone’s stuff.

  9. Jeff G. says:

To use the “forum,” you need to sign in. To sign in, you need an account. To have an account, yours must not have been suspended.

    It’s Kafkaesque.

  10. Tell him to set up another youtube account.

  11. Carin says:

Isn’t that what those jihadists do? Set up another account?

  12. Puck says:

    thor is banned.

And there was much rejoicing. Yayyyyy.

    *waves flags*

  13. cranky-d says:

I didn’t want to state the obvious, as thor just did, but the only solution I can think of is to make a new account so you can get in the forum to complain about the loss of the old account.

  14. Dan Collins says:

Then again, not that I’d ever suggest such a thing, mind you, somebody devious might suggest that a large number of people using a variety of anonymized identities flood the zone with accounts posting “unsavory material”.

  15. Jeff G. says:

I’m not allowed to sign up for a new account.

  16. Jeff G. says:

    Okay, world. You win.

    I surrender.

    Goodbye.

  17. cranky-d says:

You probably have to get a new email address to sign up for a new account.

    YouTube should be renamed YouSuck.

You can use my youtube account if you want, but…. that’s the kind of catchwrestler I am!!!

    Huge.

  23. BumperStickerist says:

My previous comment was eaten, apparently – but here goes:

    Jeff,

Jake has books for sale on Amazon.com and at Lulu. They have not been reviewed yet.

    emphasis … *yet*

    Sinc.

  24. BumperStickerist says:

fwiw, I took a look at scientificwrestling’s site – specifically the page with the scans of the handwritten letters from the guys who can kill you with their elbows, after they break your arms with their earlobes – these guys have the penmanship of seventh grade girls.

    Seriously.

I wish my handwriting were that … pretty.

  25. BumperStickerist says:

as far as practical advice –

I’d recommend either you or Tony – provided Tony did actually study under Radwan, et cetera – contact the “recommended by” people on Jake’s site and solicit their opinion about Tony’s videos.

Don’t refer to Jake’s material, but have Tony’s reviewed independently.

Develop a business plan. Jake put together a whole certification program out of whole cloth. The certification itself is completely bogus and self-referential, imo. But, hell, it’s about selling stuff to people.

I know you’re selling videos and using YouTube to promote the video, but this stuff seems to be primarily word-of-mouth.

Recruit some of the more prolific posters on the boards where this crap is talked about using private email and IMs and send them a copy of a video to have them review or endorse it. You may want to set up an affiliate-model where you pay a commission when other people sell a video for you. You might want to consider putting videos out on consignment to catch-wrestling clubs and/or tournaments.

You could contact people who run various MMA-style tournaments and off them the opportunity to sell Tony’s tapes as a fund-raiser. Send them twenty copies and they can keep (whatever number makes sense) of the proceeds.

    Jazz up the marketing copy.

Be more concise in your rebuttals to Jake’s points, provided Tony’s being truthful. You might want to correct the record, but you need to sell the product. “Jake’s full of crap – Tony’s legit.” is acceptable marketing practice. Link to the full rebuttal.

Create a Virtual “Tony C. vs. Jake Shannon” fight video wherein Virtual Tony C. forces Jake to submit in, like, twelve seconds.

Have a Tony C. student attend Jake’s class and kick his ass.

    found this in the forums.

    http://help.youtube.com/group/youtube-howto/browse_thread/thread/3181d87f2d694e27/afde22d43e03651d?lnk=gst&q=why+account+suspended#afde22d43e03651d

Through google video search “catchwrestling” I found some videos still active. perhaps this is a back door into getting some info on why the acct was suspended, if someone is a registered user
and can post comments or perhaps see how many times the video has been flagged.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uOBJVp9pTa4&feature=related
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yh_FzzqKZY8.

I found several more videos operating in just a few minutes. links to other Tony C videos also work in the related videos scrolldown.

I really hope this situation is resolved, I’m responsible for about a fifth of the views , I’d wager.

    agape,

    “your rebuttals to Jake’s points”

I apologize for the ? if it’s a bad subject, but what are Jakes points?
Did I miss something? Is there a history?

  28. Knowing Google as I do know them, if we can somehow threaten their business with China, that will solve all problems.
Anyone know any Chinese corporate big wigs?

    :-)

  29. Jeff G. says:

No reply from YouTube as of yet.

And no emails notifying me of my channel’s suspension either.

  30. Pablo says:

Jeff, have you asked Malkin about this? She’s interfaced with You Tube quite a bit over deleted material, though I don’t know that she’s ever been suspended. I’m guessing she’d be helpful.

  31. Jeff G. says:

Hadn’t, but just emailed her. Thanks, Pablo.

Will try faxing them tomorrow as well. Perhaps if I let them know that I know they pulled me because I’m a JEW they’ll be more apt to respond.

  32. Pablo says:

Tell ’em you’re black, Jeff. Jew probably ain’t good enough.

Goldstein is a plausible Muslim name, right?

  34. Bleepless says:

On getting through to large corporations, agencies or other bureaucracies, just waiting on the phone sometimes kicks you through automatically to a human (generally, one who assumes you have some reason for getting through). Punching 99 sometimes works, too. I believe there are blogs containing lists of such moat-busters.

  35. Jim in KC says:

    That’s some catch, that catch-22.

  36. Jeff Y. says:

I’m not getting this. They just suspend people without even checking into shit? WTF?

  37. Spies, Brigands, and Pirates says:

    Jeff Y.,

The thing is YouTube is a free service. You’re not their customer. Their customers are the people who buy ads from Google.

Thus, they have no incentive to keep you happy.

If you become even slightly inconvenient for them, or even pose a possibility of doing so, it’s more cost-effective for them to kick you to the curb rather than waste any employee time looking into the matter.

    That’s why I suggested Amazon S3 hosting.

Didn’t I state the same earlier? OK, so I have a more distinct style, but the thrust, man, 100% the-same!

I offered you the use of my astrobeefcake youtube account. I, mean, shit! If you’re going to sell midget-tossing tapes what better name than astrobeefcake for a youtube account? I think I have another one called astrosnortblaste, but astrobeefcake sells itself.

  39. Bob Reed says:

Another revolting display of censorship…We have to be tolerant of every left leaning or preffered identity group member produced canard, and in most cases swoon over it’s power or artsiey-ness, or some other phoney hooey. But, if it’s a guy trying to make an honest living…The electronic brownshirts can winge and complain and presto; you’re frrrrrriigggged!

My conspiratorial fantasy keeps telling me it probably went something like this;”Why this is appaling and violent, and besides, this kind of skill will allow average joes to defend themselves against the coming Obama-youth, after we take their guns and knoves away, y’know, because of the childrens…”

I vote that you tell them you are a black jew whose muslim wife needs the money you get by producing and airing Tony’s video’s, and that you desperately need to disseminate these techniques to allow other minority children to learn how to protect themselves against the inevitable attacks they’ll recieve at the hands of the eeeeeevil, white, rube, Rednecks that populate flyover country, and will most certainly rise up and riot against the righteousness of the lightworkers coming election…Or would that be laying it on a bit thick..?

The hell with them, just add another pub-like feature to your website and sell Tony’s videos through there…

Or, start a pw-tube site of your own, and allow know deconstructionist BS to be aired…

I dunno, but this kinda stuff really jerks my chain…

  40. Spies, Brigands, and Pirates says:

Or, start a pw-tube site of your own

    This looks interesting.

  41. Slartibartfast says:

Positing mere stupidity rather than malevolence, I hypothesize that YouTube’s objection was that you were posting material that Tony had rights to, and they had no way of verifying that he approved your posting of it.

Other than giving the guy a call, I mean.
