Black Women Victimized [Dan Collins]

Michelle Obama hardest hit:

We’ve watched with a mixture of pride and trepidation as the wife of the first serious African American presidential contender has weathered recent campaign travails — being called unpatriotic for a single offhand remark, dubbed a black radical because of something she wrote more than 20 years ago and plastered with the crowning stereotype: “angry black woman.” And then being forced to undergo a politically mandated “makeover” to soften her image and make her more palatable to mainstream America.

Sad to say, but what Obama has undergone, though it’s on a national stage and on a much more prominent scale, is nothing new to professional African American women. We endure this type of labeling all the time. We’re endlessly familiar with the problem Michelle Obama is confronting — being looked at, as black women, through a different lens from our white counterparts, who are portrayed as kinder, gentler souls who somehow deserve to be loved and valued more than we do. So many of us are hoping that Michelle — as an elegant and elusive combination of successful career woman, supportive wife and loving mother — can change that.

“Ain’t I a woman?” Sojourner Truth famously asked 157 years ago. Her ringing question, demanding why black women weren’t accorded the same privileges as their white counterparts, still sums up the African American woman’s dilemma today: How are we viewed as women, and where do we fit into American life?

“Thanks to the hip-hop industry,” one prominent black female journalist recently said to me, all black women are “deemed ‘sexually promiscuous video vixens’ not worthy of consideration. If other black women speak up, we’re considered angry black women who complain. This society can’t even see a woman like Michelle Obama. All it sees is a black woman and attaches stereotypes.”

Don’t know how I managed to miss that Sister Souljah moment.

Here’s more demonstrating their plight:

Consider these stunning statistics: As of 2007, according to the New York Times, 70 percent of professional black women were unmarried. Black women are five times more likely than white women to be single at age 40. In 2003, Newsweek reported that there are more black women than black men (24 percent to 17 percent) in the professional-managerial class. According to Department of Education statistics cited by the Journal of Blacks in Higher Education, black women earn 67 percent of all bachelor’s degrees awarded to blacks, as well as 71 percent of all master’s degrees and 65 percent of all doctoral degrees.

What this indicates, in my view, is that it’s really rough to be an African American male. To be single at forty is not the same as never to have been married. The relative lack of success among African-American males likely puts severe stresses on black heterosexual relations.

To argue, though, that hip-hop culture informs most white Americans’ views of who black women are is disingenuous, though, and certainly doesn’t explain the idea that women of other races are considered kinder and gentler. Or, at any rate, kinder.

I mean, OPRAH, for f*ck’s sake.

I have power!

In Chicago, people like Robert Perry are subjected to exhaustive security checks. He was patted down, his wheel chair was examined and his hands were swabbed, all in public view in a see-through room at the security checkpoint. Perry, 71, is not alone

“It’s humiliation,” Perry said.

Perry was also taken to a see-through room by a TSA agent when his artificial knee set off the metal detector.

“He yelled at me to get the belt off. ‘I told you to get the belt off.’ So I took the belt off. He ran his hands down over and pulled the pants down, they went down around my ankle,” Perry said.

At that point, Perry was standing in his underwear in public view. He asked to see a supervisor. That made things worse.

“She was yelling ‘I have power, I have power, I have power,” Perry said. The power to stop him from flying to Florida with his wife that day to celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary.

“It makes you feel like you have no rights,” Perry said.

I know it’s probaby terribly racist of me, but anyone want to bet?

Why is it everyone elses fault how you are viewed? If I walk into a job interview with 20 piercings and a mohawk and the people there view me as an idiot, wouldn’t that be my fault? His wife goes around calling our country downright mean and says she is has never been really proud of it until her husband was able to get win elections. I view her as an ahole because of those statements and that is my fault? Screw you buddy.

While we are at it let’s not forget Michelle Oppressed ducking questions about her church and pastor on the Today show with the infamous “These questions aren’t helping my children.”

Can you imagine the depth of pillory that would have resulted if Cindy McCain had tried this dodge?

    Boo! Hoo!

  7. Mr. Pink says:

Yes let us all forget all the things I have done that you dissaprove of or may affect your vote in November. Let us all just focus on the children and what I will promise you the government will do for them if you vote for Obama.

You know whose fault that is? It’s those white devils that run record companies. Seriously. The brothers would absolutely not be dissing sisters like that if they weren’t being forced to by corporate money men. By which I mean Joooos.

From the article: Even in the 21st century, black womenwhite guys are still bombarded with media and Internet images that portray us as loud, aggressive, violent and often grossly obese and unattractive.

Last week in class I sat for more minutes than I wanted to and listened to a young black woman (still a teenager) spout how no one talks about slavery, but we’re very free to discuss the Holocaust. She even went so far as to say slavery in the South was the “black holocaust”. A head cold kept me from kicking her around the classroom.

So young and so filled with hate.

  11. BJTex says:

Cindy McCain has barely opened her mouth and she’s already taken hits for her drug addiction, her inherited wealth and being a “homewrecker.” I don’t see anybody out in the media bemoaning the “having to endure this type of labeling” slight.

Never mind, she’s white, blond and rich and deserves whatever crap gets tossed in her direction.

  12. JD says:

This ain’t fuckin’ helpin’ her keep fresh fruit in the house for her kids either.

You know, someday we be able to have that discussion about slavery. Such a mysterious, unknown part of our history. It’s too bad we’ve kept that part of our heritage so hidden from the light of day.

Snark aside – I’ve long wondered why we have so many movies about slavery and the Holocaust, yet barely nothing about life under Stalin or Mao.

  15. Carin says:

But, of course “wondered” isn’t really the right way of putting it.

  16. Clint says:

Carin, it’s the indelible stain that taints all White People. We can’t allow others to see it. I keep mine hidden at all times.

Stalin and Mao were heroes! They revolutionized the societies they took over…uh… saved! Where’s the hook to make a movie over?

Gee, I thought that whole “Poor us! We are victims!” thing was supposed to be behind us. In fact, I thought it was the Obamas who were supposed to be driving that.

  25. banned in colorado says:

Pol Pot was supported by William Fu’king Buckley in his defense against Vietnamese liberators. Dumb asswipes, your Conservative hero was against the Vietnamese liberation of Cambodia and supporting Pol Pot in defense. The US did nothing to protect Cambodia and in fact initiated the holocaust there…(as told in “Swimming to Cambodia”.__) Plenty of good movies have been done on Stalin, but your just too limited to find them: Enemy at the Gates (has a pretty good feel for Stalin’s terrible leadership in WW2 with a Kruschev type of leader as a knowing complicitor of the Boss’s leadership in the disastrous Leningrad experience for both Germans and Russians : “save yourself the red tape” handing a gun to a failed general who had to shot himself instead of meeting the ‘red tape’.) Excellent Russian movies and French ones out there too. Can’t remember the names at the moment. But relying on boiler plate John Birch crap won’t get you any knowledge. The the number of victims has been wildly inflated by American jingoists. Millions yes, but scores of millions, no. The fascists of Germany and Japan cost the world of a Hundred million deaths alone in WW2. So fascists seem to have the upper hand in killing people. All of the violent deaths in Africa of the last decadeent are examples of fascism: Islamic versions especially. )

btw, Buckley was the grandfather of American conservativism and his ideology killed more people than Mao and Stalin combined. After all his father and all supported Hitler and Franco in their runup to WW2… and his father was instrumental in the oligarchy instituted in Mexico, helping it continue it’s violent traditions.

springtime for Hitler (and Pol Pot)? Whittaker Chambers does a dance!

  30. Education Guy says:

You know who shouldn’t take any responsibility for Pol Pot? The Cambodians for allowing the North Vietnamese to use their country as a safe haven to transport supplies to the south. Also, the North Vietnamese for the same reason. Lastly, let’s put none of the blame on Johnson (a Democrat BTW) who knew it was going on and did nothing about it or the Democratically controlled congress who decided that continued funding the South Vietnamese was not in the cards.

Buckley on the other hand should get all of the blame.

do some actual reading asshat – the american left supported Hitler and Mussolini all the way up until Hitler broke with Stalin. At that point, the american left picked the international communist Stalin over the national socialist Hitler – both leftists, not rightists.

Conservatism cannot be blamed for any serious atrocities, while your idiology has given us Lenin, Stalin, Hitler, Mussolini, Castro, Pol Pot, Vietnam, and on and on. Why is it that whenever leftists get power they start killing and torturing people by the millions? Ever ask yourself that?

I can never get over how ignorant, uneducated and just plain stupid liberals are. Even the liberals I meet who have advanced degrees simply do not know (and don’t care to know) basic facts from history. Yet, their ignorence never seems to phase them when it comes to opininng on things they have no clue about.

  44. Mr. Pink says:

Do not forget sporting Che tshirts and sporting Mao handbags. Tell me the last time you have seen an American conservative hold up an icon of mass murder?

  45. takeshi kovacs says:

Ok, I just threw up a little in my mouth, just now. Or “These Goggles they do nothink” Buckley supported the noncommunist resistance, which were in point of fact, allied with the Khmer Rouge. The Irony of course, was that China supported the ‘maoists in a hurry’
that were the Khmer Rouge. The Rouge wouldn’t have been able to prevail without the Cooper/Church withdrawal amendments, that pulled our forces out; because of the temper tantrum started by
liberals including Tony Lake, over the invasion of Cambodia; to disrupt the VietCong sanctuaries at COSVN. Lake, with regards to that action, his silence
over Cambodia; his inability to apply these lessons to the crisis in Iran and Nicaragua; should keep him out of office in perpetuity, instead he’s in the running to be Osama’s Secretary of State. Anthony Lewis and even Sydney Schamberg, grossly misunderstood the reality in Cambodia; a fact the latter’s
translator, Dith Pran, would experience personally. It is not out of posibility that a similar event could still happen with Iraq; with Sadr and the Wahhabis providing the role of the Khmer Rouge.

“Enemy of the State” is the sad tale of two genocidal tyrants. who miscalculated
their own deceptions, and the peoples suffered for it. Stalin, massacred the Ukrainians, exiled the Chechens, et al and annihilated his officer corps by falling for an Abwehr provocations. He
further thought Hitler would stop at
invading Western Europe, sharing Poland and the Balkans. Hitler for his part,
believed himself to be thereincarnation of Napoleon (and probably Charlemagne)
without considering the step that really
crushed Napoleon’s advance. A more contemporary analogy would the Iran Iraq
war, with both the Ayatollah and Saddamm
    spending lives like kindling.

You could make a good argument that the jihadis are conservative. They definitely aren’t liberal.

  48. great banana says:

As to Michelle Obama – I love how we are not allowed to look at anything she actually said or wrote, but must idolize and if we don’t we are racists against black women. B/c no white woman or white man ever had to do a political makeover. No White woman or black man campaigning as a surogate for a politician has ever been called out for things they said or wrote before Michelle Obama.

No, that’s right, it’s clearly all about her race. We can’t possibly hold her accountable for things she says and writes – no indeed, that would be racist.

  49. Mr. Pink says:

I do not think a military dictatorship can be considered right wing ideology.

  50. great banana says:

    Education guy,

You could make a good argument that the jihadis are conservative. They definitely aren’t liberal.

Well, if you try to define conservative as “religious” then I suppose you could. And, of course, that is what the left tries to do all the time. However, if we use what the actual definition of conservatism is (at least here in america), that claim would be dubious at best.

Although, it is difficult to say since I don’t believe that the jihhadis have a coherent political philosophy, only a religious philosophy. I certainly doubt they are strong believers in personal freedom, individual liberty and limited government.

  51. great banana says:

I do not think a military dictatorship can be considered right wing ideology.

No, but the left defines anything that opposes socialsim/communism/ progressivism/liberalism as being “conservative” – which is how they try to claim Hitler and Nazism was a creature of the right – since Hitler ended up at war with the USSR, he must have been a “righist”.

  52. Enlightened says:

Black people perpetuate the negative stereotypes of themselves in music, in TV, film and books, and then blame white folks for assuming there’s some truth to the stereotypes. And now thanks to Whoopee the Moron angry black persons have carte blanche permission to perpetuate the utlimate anti-black epithet by laying claim to the word nigger as a term of endearment. GMAFB.

Michelle Obama is being treated with kid gloves compared to what some assholes have said about Laura Bush.

This dumb bitch is just poking her finger in the liberal victimology pie. I’m so over the blame game.

  53. Education Guy says:

    great banana

The whole discussion of which side gets which of history’s villains is a slippery one to begin with, especially if doing so involves forcing them into groups from an American perspective. To the jihadis religion and politics are one and the same.

  54. Pablo says:

Buckley, who once when asked what living person he most despised answered “Pol Pot” supported Pol Pot? datalessdave, you’re a fucking imbecile. Please shut up. Think of the pixels.

  55. Education Guy says:

Whoopee the Moron angry black persons have carte blanche permission to perpetuate the utlimate anti-black epithet by laying claim to the word nigger as a term of endearment.

I disagree, because Whoopee doesn’t get to decide for all black people, and she sure doesn’t get to decide for me. The only thing she has done is to push the “game” into extra innings.

  56. Education Guy says:

Of course all of this Pol Pot discussion has moved us away from the important topic of what an extremely angry person Michelle Obama is. Plus she’s black you know. And angry. And black.

  57. Mr. Pink says:

So angry white male is not racist and can be used by evening news anchors. Angry black female is racist and should be strongly denounced even if the said person is by most definitions angry and black.

    Ok I got it.

  58. Clint says:

But is she as angry as Pol Pot? That’s the real issue here.

  59. Clint says:

I think we can skip the feelings part and go straight to “black” being racist.

Because of the absence of light! O! will restore the light to those without!

  60. Mr. Pink says:

Was Michelle Obama ever in that church when Rev. Wright was “preaching” that the U.S. government, run by rich white people, created the AIDS virus to kill brown people. I would really like to know.

Apparently the Obama’s don’t think I’m a kinder, gentler, worthy of love and caring, professional white woman.

Michelle Obama’s husband thinks I am a typical white person, and I’m angry so I cling to my religion and my guns.

I guess if I made over $200K a year, and wore $600.00 earings, designer dresses, ate arugula and weighed 100 lbs soaking wet I might not be so typical and angry.

  62. Mr. Pink says:

I think you are classified as a bitter clinger if your white and live in middle America unless you vote Democrat. Just a guess though.

They just don’t fit, even though the Iranians use leftist imperialist language in their pronouncements on politics. Jihadists are Religious Zealots wherein politics, government and religion are completely contained within the ultra fundamentalist Islamic cult.

Those who are still awake; I thank you for your attention.

  65. banned in colorado says:

just keep wanking guys. Dan, though you should know better. Knowing a little Chinese helps. Mao caused the deaths of many but not as many at the Ignorant American neoFascists like to think as our poorly trained NSA guys interpreted the Chinese word for “many” (10,000) as literal. It could have been a hundred or a thousand but in Chinese the literal word for many also means “10,000”. So using the NSA literal translations it comes up as nearly a 100 million. Same with the bloviations of the USSR’s extremes. They couldn’t kill as many as the Nazis as they just didn’t have the technology. mass graves never more than several thousand. The Great Terror was effective in reducing the need for such mass executions. A KGB came up with a figure of a million and a half in all of Stalin’s era of actual executions. The other deaths due to bad food, no food, etc. could be just like the czarist times. Bad shit but never as much as the propagandists like to say. And Russian deathes increased after the fall of the USSR so what to make of that? Capitalism or the Oligarchs kill more than communists? Just a question. But believing in boilerplate propaganda isn’t a way to think. Just a way to React.
This is not to defend either Stalin or Mao who are in fact Right-wing communists it’s just to show what literal *asshats* American NeoFascists are. Communism only comes about due to the extremes caused by Right Wing ideology. I am a truer antiCommunist than either of you by fighting the extreme income inequality that you are engendering. Marx’s theories only came about due to the famines and misery caused by unregulated and extreme ‘Liberalization and rationalization’ of the economic sphere in the early to mid 1800. The more enlightened conservatives learned that later, and milder democratic socialist applications led to a lessening of extremes of wealth in Germany and western Europe but the resistance of the oligarchs and monarchists led to both WW1 and WW2 and the Great Depression and WW2 was the later equalization for the USA. Now, conservatives like yourself (with more famous idiots like Grover Norquist, et al) want to return to the income inequalities of the early 1800s..leading to the same ol’ shit all over again.

i.e. the extremes of the Right lead to the extremes of the Left.

The numbers of dead under National Socialists pale in comparison to the mass executions and deliberate starvations planned and delivered by Mao and Stalin.

yeah, yeah, tell that to the 450 thousand Americans dying in the fight against fascism. But a smart Stalin is perhaps mythically quoted: A million deaths is a statistic, a death of a single human is a tragedy. Solzhenitsyn understood that all too much and maybe that turned him into a raging bat in his dotage as a result. But ignorance on the part of Americans as yourself is perhaps why Solzhenitsyn left Vermont. It was just too dumb here. Again it is good to focus on the particulars as well as the general. Examine how have “Liberals” or “Leftists” have hurt you? And why do you hate them so? I am wondering. It’s not the economics as you’re not in business as I am (unfortunately not my preference but then the freedom is nice..)

Dan, you need to at least pretend to be an English Professor. Political thought is not your field. Write fiction. Didn’t Iowa teach you anything? I am hoping it was the famous Iowa Writer’s school perhaps?

It’s a shame, what sex with bugs will do to a guy…

  84. Rob Crawford says:

yeah, yeah, tell that to the 450 thousand Americans dying in the fight against fascism.

    So only American deaths count?

Jeebus Christ, people say we’re parochial.

Has anyone else noticed how the “progressives” have let their hair down lately? You’ve got SEK defending the Kossacks dancing on Snow’s grave, Semencleo calling for the re-institution of slavery, and dicklessdave defending Stalin, Mao, and Pol Pot.

At least they’re being honest for a change.

  85. JD says:

As someone noted previously, on another thread polluted with the Mother Gaia ravaging bilge puked forth by datadave, it appears the Leftists are given a dictionary with all of the words listed, but the definitions are left blank, which allows them to just make up their own definitions as they go along.

  86. maggie katzen says:

Is there any point actually trying to rebut Dave’s arguments and opinions?

it’s not recommended. kinda like the Necrinomicon of commenting. that way lies madness.

  87. MayBee says:

I think it’s weird that datadave moved to colorado and then changed his name, just like nishi did.

  88. JD says:

I think it is weird how fucking stoooooooooooooopid datadave and nishit are.

  89. Hillary Clinton says:

We’re endlessly familiar with the problem Michelle Obama is confronting — being looked at, as black women, through a different lens from our white counterparts, who are portrayed as kinder, gentler souls who somehow deserve to be loved and valued more than we do.

You gotta be fucking shitting me. Just what color is the sky in your world, Sophia?

  90. baldilocks says:

We don’t call her “Aunt Esther” for nothing.

BTW, if it hasn’t been mentioned here already, a lot of black women dislike Michelle. Like everyone, we look at her and say ‘what’s she got to be mad about?” (My boyfriend says that her “home life” ain’t so great, if you get my drift.)

  91. Dan Collins says:

That could be due to the post-masculinity, Juliette.

  92. kelly says:

I can believe that a lot of black women don’t like MichellO. Do you think that will stop them from voting for her husband, baldilocks?

  93. Rusty says:

Is there any point actually trying to rebut Dave’s arguments and opinions?

No. He’s actually quite proud of the vast chasm between his ears, and misses no chance to prove it. Unfortunately until he gets another job, he’ll be here awhile.

  94. poppa india says:

Shorter banned: I want other peoples money.

  95. Techie says:

Could we ban datadave, because reading that really hurts my brain.

It’s easy to understand. It’s a simple syllogism. “Conservatives” are Evil. Evil occurs in the world. Therefore, “conservatives” cause the evil in the world.

Nazism, fascism and Japanese Imperialism in WW2? (American) Conservatives

    The Khmer Rouge: (American) Conservatives

USSR and Red Chinese slaughters of their own citizens: didn’t happen or (American) Conservatives

and so on and so forth….

  96. Techie says:

I like that particular bit: “the word “many” equals 10,000″

Riiiiiiiiiiiight, so all those people who were never seen or heard from again simply walked off the face of the Earth?

  97. baldilocks says:

“Do you think that will stop them from voting for her husband, baldilocks?”

    Not a chance. :-(

  98. Mikey NTH says:

I enjoy reading opinions by the ignorati. I wonder what will happen if Sen. Obama is elected and eschaton does not come to pass and we remain in Kipling’s World?

Eh, they’ll probably try to find an even more sincere pumpkin patch to wait in. I think very few will have this revelation:

Sally Brown: I could have gone to tricks-or-treats! Halloween is over and I missed it! Instead, I spend the night on a pumpkin patch and all that came was a beagle! You blockhead! I could have had apples and gum, and cookies and money and other things! I’ll sue! Trick-or-treats only come once a year, and instead I spent all night sitting in a pumpkin patch! What a fool I was! You owe me restitution!

  99. Dan Collins says:

    OMG, it’s Luo-on-Luo Violence!

  100. baldilocks says:

    ¿Que?

  101. Dan Collins says:

    You’re Luo. He’s Luo.

And you committed verbal violence on his sacred image, blasphemer!

  102. Mikey NTH says:

    #64 BJ:

Jihadists are Religious Zealots wherein politics, government and religion are completely contained within the ultra fundamentalist Islamic cult.

The word is totalitarian – all power bases in society: government, religion, civic institutions, economics, youth groups, etc. are under the control of the party (no matter how you define party). Total control over all aspects of life. Totalitarian. The details don’t matter much, be it Aryans, the Workers International, the Caliphate.

    Totalitarianism.

  103. baldilocks says:

“And you committed verbal violence on his sacred image, blasphemer!”

    Oh, I forgot the rules.

  104. Mikey NTH says:

    #90 baldilocks:

Like everyone, we look at her and say ‘what’s she got to be mad about?”

I think she is a very controlling personality, and is angry that she cannot control eveything. That kind of personality is an equal opportunity employer, so to speak.

    My two cents, FWTW.

  105. MlR says:

Buckley on the other hand should get all of the blame.

Don’t forget Nixon and Kissinger – the two guys tried harder than anybody else to stop the Communist takeover of Indochina.

  106. MlR says:

“You could make a good argument that the jihadis are conservative. They definitely aren’t liberal.”

They aren’t Conservatives. In fact, Salafi jihadists are the opposite – revolutionaries. Their goal is to upset the entire status quo and impose their vision of 7th century Islam. It’s one of the reasons that in places such as Afghanistan, Algeria, and Pakistan they prosper at the expense of traditional religious authorities, who are the real conservatives.

  107. MlR says:

“Change…change…change…” (Because anything would be better than the status quo – especially if it puts me and like-minded in charge!)

  108. alan says:

His wife goes around calling our country downright mean and says she is has never been really proud of it until her husband was able to get win elections.

Imagine if the Obamas were White…can you imagine the media frenzy? They would have had their 15 minutes fame and then been laughed off the street AND out of their respective careers.
