Today’s New York Times piece by Adam Nagourney on the internal politics of Camp McCain is best read in conjunction with yesterday’s NYT column from Bill Kristol.
In the latter, Kristol touts his friend — and long-time McCain confidante — Mike Murphy as the man who not only can tell McCain when he’s made a mistake (a sort valuable to any candidate, probably doubly so to the stubborn McCain), but also provide a theme for McCain’s currently bland pudding. There is an obstacle to the cavalry’s arrival:
The current McCain campaign is chock full of G.O.P. establishment types, many of whom aren’t great fans of the irreverent Murphy. Murphy’s also made no secret of his low opinion of the Bush-Rove political machine that has produced many of these operatives. And Murphy hasn’t made his possible entry into the campaign smoother by telling a New York Times reporter the other day [Mark Leibovich] that “the depressingly self-absorbed McCain campaign machine needs to get out of the way†of its candidate.
Nevertheless, Kristol predicted that Murphy would soon be onboard.
Today, Nagourney reports on the relationship between Murphy and newly-installed operational campaign manager Steve Schmidt (one of those from the Bush 2004 orbit). Nagourney reports that both McCain and Murphy have told others that they are both interested in Murphy coming onboard. He notes that Murphy and Schmidt had their differences working on the Schwarzenegger re-elect campaign, but that these were mild compared to Murphy’s friction with other factions within Team McCain. There is no comment from Schmidt, but Nagourney reports:
Mr. Murphy, while declining to comment about the possibility of his joining the McCain campaign, said that he admired Mr. Schmidt and that there were no differences between them.
“Steve Schmidt has been a friend of mine since I originally helped recruit him into the Arnold world back in 2005,†Mr. Murphy said. “Steve and I are friends, and we get along fine.â€Â
Thus is the New York Times used for John McCain and his advisers to pass notes to each other like middle schoolers (which I suppose is done by text messaging these days). McCain and Murphy tell others of their interest in each other. Murphy says something clumsy to Mark Leibovich, so his buddy Bill Kristol jumps in to talk up Murphy’s strengths. Meanwhile, Murphy tells Nagourney (who is just coincidentally doing a story on a campaign shake-up from last week) he can get along just fine with Schmidt, who owes him and shouldn’t listen to those other McCainiacs saying mean things behind his back. It is important that this play out someplace as public as the pages of the Grey Lady, so that those other anti-Murphy people are warned that McCain wants Murphy onboard.
Maybe Murphy really is the missing ingredient for the McCain campaign, which before last week’s shake-up was impressing almost no one. But for now, this “Do you like me? Check box yes or no” style of campaign organization should not be impressing anyone, either.
Update: The Politico reports that Murphy now says he does not expect to be joining the McCain campaign, ostensibly because he does not think he would have the authority to pursue a reform theme, as opposed to a Rovian, partisan attack strategy. Yet.
update 2: Murphy opts for NBC over McCain. And really, who can blame him. [Jeff]
Lovely campaign they are running when 6 out of ten people when asked immediatly think of the word “old”. Did they hire all the geniuses in charge of Gouliani’s “I do not need the first 5 states” strategy?
I hope Mike can tell McCain that his surrogates are teh suck. Bunch of Westminster poodle boys.
Hell McCain can not even get in the news unless an Obama surrogate brings him up or he does something stupid.
Do you read at all, Proggy? Since when is one in five internet respondents 60%?
All I know is Rosemary Bates is too old and feeble to be worth a shit to anyone really. In her moments of clarity she thinks she’s supporting Baracky. We just smile and nod.
Bill Clinton just called McCain deranged.
You guys should be happy this is the first time I have even heard McCain’s name on the news in a couple days.
Hey look Iraq is telling us to leave…hahahahahahahahahhahahhhahaahahaha.
Why is that funny exactly?
I guess they are endorsing Obama’s policy EG. So how long until McCain flip flops and endorses a timetable for withdraw?
Since Obama has many, many policies for Iraq it goes without saying that his would be endorsed.
Baracky supported Saddam Hussein. I wouldn’t want his troops in my country either if I were them.
Since proggie never sources his material, here is the exact quote from Maliki:
Why is this such a big deal, proggie? Maliki’s feeling his oats since the Iraqi military has had success against insurgents, al qaeda and militias. Of course he’d now like to start negotiations as to some kind of a withdrawal timetable. Those talks will be extensive and long running, subject to adjustment as conditions on the ground warrant.
In other words, as a snark to the PW community … YAWN
Sorry, link here.
I think Iraq is telling us, that having taken the training wheels off, they think they can ride the bike themselves. Which is exactly what McCain wanted.
Barack, not so much.
We are supposed to be surprised that at some point, Iraq will want to take care of themselves?
Bill Clinton just called McCain deranged.
Yes, we should all be listening to the man who has trouble with the definition of the word “is”. A right genius that one. The soap opera president.
Hillary is going to have to revisit her friendship with McCain since Bill thinks he is deranged.
Bill is a historical footnote. His legacy was just repudiated by his own party, I couldn’t help noticing. Kind of humiliating, really.
Who did worse damage to their own party, Bill or bush?
You’ve already admitted that the Dems rally around their own no matter what PH, so the question is really kind of lame.
Bill totaled the Democratic Party. They’ve been on media life support ever since.
Not so much McCain, BumperStickerist, but Chimpy McHalliburton is high-fiving his advisors and grinning like a loon, and ProggHero will never figure out why. There will of course be some disappointment and outrage on the Right. George Bush is not an imperialists, but there are imperialists around, and Bush uses them the same way anybody uses fellow travelers and useful fools.
Wouldn’t it be kewl if, come October, Basra was full of ships loading American equipment and Baghdad airport was overloaded with CRAF planes bringing soldiers home? Well, I think it would be, and I’m fairly sure George Bush does, too. Tough for McCain, of course, but if you think Bush gives a s*t about that you need to pay better attention.
What would be really kewl would be if the timing came out right. Obama keeps getting pounded by conservative Democrats to move away from the DU/MoveOn/Mooreonic position. Suppose he does that, and finally comes out forcefully for a continued American presence in Iraq for as long as they’re needed — then Bush presents a SOFOR agreement to Congress that calls for maybe 20-30K advisors in two bases and access for military aircraft, and the rest come home… it’d be like him to go out with a last, and spectacular, rope-a-dope maneuver. His grin as he boarded Air Force One to go to Waco and then Crawford would look like Carter’s in 1976.

Ric
US TROOPS OUT OF IRAQ EVENTUALLY!!!
It just doesn’t have the same pop.
I have said we will vote for liars, never said we would rally around our own no matter what. Hell look at Lieberman. We are definately better than you guys when it comes to sticking with our own in support of our ideology.
I bet the numbers of Repubs staying home this election will beat the number of Dems.

(CNN)  If Hillary Clinton and John McCain become their party’s presidential nominees, the general election race is likely to be a love-fest.
At least according to Bill Clinton.

That is why only pinheads pay any attention to Bill Clinton.
Did you hear what Bill Clinton had to say about Baracky? A kid with a fairy tale.
Who did worse damage to their own party, Bill or bush?
That is what is important to you. What is important to me is who did the most damage to their own country. That is where we are very, very different, you and I.
Lieberman was Kos feeling his oats. How’s Lamont doing these days BTW? That Dem-Kos relationship is sure to be really good for the party. Good luck with that.
I’m curious what the “Dem ideology” is. As far as I have been able to tell it involves hating/punishing rich and/or productive people, hating anyone who leans slightly right, and throwing money at problems regardless of eventual outcome. Oh there’s a lot of talk about racial justice and social justice, but besides what I have already pointed out it seems to amount to setting racial/gender/orientation quotas.
I bet the numbers of Repubs staying home this election will beat the number of Dems.
No bet. It seems a certainty.
The nice thing about Bush is that he is a leader who did what needed to be done regardless of any personal price that had to be paid. Obama talks about Hope and Change, but Bush actually delivered it to those living under absolute tyranny.
“We are definitely better than you guys when it comes to sticking with our own in support of our ideology.”
– Absolutely PH. We all went to school on your show of candidate loyalty when the SecProggs really kicked Lamont’s ass. A textbook example for party loyalty and organizing if ever there was one.
– Maybe if you took the time to have an extra latte’ first you could avoid stepping on a bag of comment shit every morning PH. You think?
– Ok, who’s got a link to this Laura Bush Harlliquin trash tome? Is the fem author a Lefturd, finally scrapping the bottom of the BDS barrel, or just another opportunist out for a buck.
– If it wasn’t for the occasional shakeup in the McCain campaign, you’d forget he was even running. Discussing McOldDudes campaign tactics is as interesting as sorting laundry.

Oh, and it’s President Bush, fucknozzle.
NObrain it is bush. Just ask 70 percent of people in America who hate him too.
im not sure this Murphy posturing terribly much matters.
I’m reckoning McCain carries 12 states, maybe 14-15. Polls matter little now; with gas at the $4.50-$5 range and the economy sinking (look at finance and housing for a starter) Obama has to avoid gaffes and the presidency is his.
I know of very very few people planning on voting for McCain; i have heard of NO ONE planning on crossing the aisle to vote for him.
Because of my first hand experience with the institutional left as a grad student TA, I cannot vote for Obama.
Sorry Karl.. OT…. but I know a few of you are IT people.. or at least computer nerds.. Help! My home computer has been taken over by something my kid downloaded from the internet.. Anyone have a suggestion as to what I need to do to wrest back control of my computer from this rogue matrix wannabe? I’m not opposed to a scorched earth plan …

PH,
I hate to broach this as I’m sure I’ll get a dishonest answer, but at comoment 3 you state:
Hell McCain can not even get in the news unless an Obama surrogate brings him up or he does something stupid.
Yet, on other threads, you constantly tell us that the media loves McCain and is biased toward him. Do you even pretend to have any consistency in your views anymore? Or are you just willing to say whatever you think will get a reaction? Very typical of a leftist to not be able to remember what they were arguing just a few minutes ago and take the opposite view 10 seconds later if they think it helps their side gain power.
EG: MS Windows XP Home version
– I believe you can circumvent the restore lock out by the virus by booting using F4 or F8 as you come up. Disconnect from the net first, and select “safe mode” from the manual boot menu, then select a restore date from any time before the kiddo used your comp last. That should purge the system and give you nack control. Havn’t had to do it in a while.
– Also when you get control back run all your virus software and do a full clean and defrag.
I have said we will vote for liars, never said we would rally around our own no matter what. Hell look at Lieberman. We are definately better than you guys when it comes to sticking with our own in support of our ideology.
Does this idiot even know what he is saying anymore? He is holding up Joe Lieberman as an example of how wonderful the dems are? Joe Lieberman who they defeated in a primary but who won reelection b/c the rest of the state knew that the left loonies that were active in the primary couldn’t be given any real power? The same Joe Lieberman who thinks O’bama is a joke and supports McCain?
Well GB how about this I will answer that question if you answer mine first. I read alot of proggressive blogs and it seems a common thread to talk about the corporate media and how liberal media bias is a myth. Why do you think they hold those opinions?
= That would be the one GB. With the Left there are no failures, just new opportunities to lie about failures.
BBH is giving good advice, re: safe mode and disconnecting from the net.
Here is something you can try to get access to control panel back:
1. From the Start menu, choose Run…
2. type regedit
– You can screw things up if you go around changing things with regedit when you don’t know what you’re doing, so be careful here.
3. From the Edit menu, choose Find…
4. type (or copy and paste) NoControlPanel in the search box and uncheck “Keys” and “Data” (so only “Values” is checked)
5. Choose OK to begin the search. It should find an entry that looks like
NoControlPanel REG_DWORD 0x00000001
6. Double-click this. Change the value to 0 (zero) and choose OK
7. Press F3 to repeat the search. There may be multiple entries you need to change. Keep doing this until it reports it can’t find any more
“Why do you think they hold those opinions?”
– Because the Left lives in their own little bubble, and they can’t understand how they lose so much with a complete monopoly in the legacy press working full bore for them? You think?
Ouros: That virus sounds familiar. One of our office computers got infected when our resident IT dumass opened an attachment from some spam.Changes access, disallows reinstallation of virus softwear. causes blue screen errors (kernal, paging, stacks, etc.) on Windows XP.
Our tech sent the hard drive out to be recovered after carefully backing up data last week. They are cleaning it with NOD32 as AVG, McAfee and Norton can’t handle it.
You might have to go outside to get this one saved as it is particularly nasty.
Why do you think they hold those opinions?
They are delusional and more interested in propping up their opinions than learning the truth. In my opinion, the delusional line, while true, tends to get peoples defense mechanisms going.
The question is BBH why do they hold those opinions, I seriously doubt it is because they lose an election and think to themselves “gee we lost again how about we believe that our helpers are not helping enough.” (To use your words)
Here’s Bill Clinton alleging Obaman involvement in vote suppression.
BJT: Yeah… removed by McAffee virusscan and as McAffee tries to reload it never completes.. Commercial scrubbing my crappy HD wouldnt be cost effective.. I dont mind losing the data.. can I just reformat the entire drive and reinstall XP fresh (I have the CD)? Would the devil program be able to hide elsewhere in my computer?
“The question is BBH why do they hold those opinions…”
– When you’re out of power, and you really have nothing to offer save nn extremely unpopular ideology, its a matter of desperate times call for desperate measures.
– So you have no choice but to Base your cult movement on the following premises:
* If theres a non-Leftist President of any party, then he and America are evil and wrong in everything they do by definition, and we must spread the perception that he and the country are universally hated at every opportunity.
* whatever the cult of personality and our leader of the moment says, he/she is not to ever be questioned or found at fault in any public forum or media.
– Its called the “jackass fallacy approach”.
– Sometimes it works, mostly it doesn’t.
PH
When the Dems lose, they do not turn to inward to ask why, they look for Republican malfeasance. Bush “stole” the election in 2000. The American population was “too stupid” to know what was good for it in 2004.
Contrariwise, when the Reps lost in 2006 it was because they were teh suck and they knew it. The great part about this is that I can tell you this with absolute honesty and know that it will be denied, and thus never learned. It’s what you guys do, it’s who you are.

– Exactly, (ibid) see-“The Jackass fallacy and the use of the Big Lie to capture the narrative and control perceptions, ie. – K. Marx, ref.”
PH,
Your question has absolutely no relevance to my question pointing out your consistent dishonesty in changing your arguments from one issue to the next – and in fact contradicting your very own claims.
However, b/c I’m not afraid to answer a direct question, here goes:
Well GB how about this I will answer that question if you answer mine first. I read alot of proggressive blogs and it seems a common thread to talk about the corporate media and how liberal media bias is a myth. Why do you think they hold those opinions?
I find it is b/c most of the extreme left (which is the kind of people who post to and comment on such sites) are so far out of the mainstream that they view the mainstream media, which clearly tilts left, as being on the right. In other words, they are so far to the left that they think McCain is a far right conservative.
Also, they have delusions and believe all corporations are “evil” and “conspire” so the fact that media are owned by corporations is “proof” in their tiny minds that the media is really conservative.
b/c they have no understanding of how capitalism works and how corporation operate, they don’t understand that b/c the corporate owner of a newspaper say, may be somewhat conservative, the editors, publishers, and reporters working for the paper are not. Yet, they don’t understand that it is the reporters, editors, etc. actually chosing the stories to report, chosing the people to interview and quote, etc. Thus, your friends at those sites don’t understand how it is the self-identified leftist reporters and editors who cause the mainstream media to be leftward bias. Your friends on the left believe that the “evil” corporations give marching orders to the editors, who then give orders to the reporters.
So, it is a combination of ignorance, delusions, and paranoia which causes your friends on those sites to have such wrong ideas.
After all, I read lefty sites and it is pretty clear that they also have no real knowledge of history or economics. Why do you think that is?
Or, if a million retards hold a viewpoint, does it make that viewpoint correct. I think Kos and DU prove that it does not.
#61 BBH
Thanks, I had no idea that it had a name.
PH,
Just to be clear – I don’t think the media conspires to tilt leftward. I don’t believe most media organizations believe or realize that they tilt leftward.
Everyone has biases, and those biases color our decisions and choices. Thus, when a reporter decides to cover or not cover a certain story, or which angle to take on a story, or who to go to for quotes, etc., those choices are all colored by their biases. B/c poll after poll clearly shows that the people who work at mainstream organizations are overwhelmingly liberal (something like 85% to 15%), rational people will understand that those biases will tilt coverage.
Will the reporter be hostile to the politician or not? Will the reporter believe a politician’s story or delve deeper? The answers to those questions are colored by the reporters biases.
I don’t believe that most journalists purposefully set out to report in a baises fashion. I believe it just happens. Which is why I wish reporters were all up front about their biases so the public could take such biases into account when reading/seeing a story.
50, progg hero–its not. People who try and claim that the majority of MSM–the editors, producers and reporters, (as well as so-called on air talent) are anything other than orthodox liberal are absurd.
to think that this does not, at some level, impact reporting is asinine.
I know this–I work as an investigative reporter for a major MSM publication in a company that is the ground zero of MSM. Thus the assertions of Kos and the like are always vastly amusing to me. To be frank, amongst ourselves, most reporters and editors dont even attempt to cover up their sympathies.
where the right gets it wrong is that all GOP weaknesses become a problem traceable in some part to media bias. Its not. Bush sucked as a president and killed the republican party. It will take a cycle or two to get over that.
for all Bill Clinton’s popularity with the people, let’s recall a couple of those pesky facts:
* Clinton never got 50% of the popular vote
* House of Reps went Republican in 1994 after a 40 year long Democratic majority by picking up 54 seats in the House
* 1996 Republicans maintained their majority in the House
* 1998 Republicans maintain majority in the House
* 2000 – Clinton’s Veep fails to win the presidential election despite Clinton’s approval ratings. The Dem presidential ticket manages to lose both their home states, yet Dems place the blame elsewhere.
* House remains Republican in 2002.
* Bush wins reelection.
* House goes Democratic in 2006. This has previously been explained in Wikipedia as the electorate’s “six year itch” with incumbents, yet this time the switch is a dire portent.
* Democratic controlled Congress manages to achieve a 12% approval rating, less than 1/2, possibly a 1/3rd of what President Bush’s approval.
—
Yep, that Democratic party is nothing if not comprised whip-smart, non-compromising marketing geniuses.
“Which is why I wish reporters were all up front about their biases so the public could take such biases into account when reading/seeing a story.”
– Critical examination (careful and considered introspection) of your personal bias’s is not in the Lefts skill set, along with fact checking, or even fact importance of any sort. Facts are too subject to opinion (notice the oxymoron), and therefore suspect, and they can harm the power of the Narrativeâ„¢, which has been carefully crafted to support the desired perception, and is universally supported by the collective, and therefore never to be questioned. Remember, party first, always.

PH,
Your question has absolutely no relevance to my question pointing out your consistent dishonesty in changing your arguments from one issue to the next – and in fact contradicting your very own claims.
Well thanks for answering. I will answer your question as straightforward as I can. I think even a retarded 3 year old spider monkey can see that the media is felating Obama like a Thai prostitute. What I have been doing with my contradictory claims is straight up copying and pasting comments by proggressives from either the link posted on here, or a proggressive website where they talk about the same subject. They often contradict eachother on the issue of media bias since the Clinton/Obama primary campaign.
I should have honestly stayed away from the media bias comments considering all the Hillary voters just spent 6 months crying about it, but now have all returned to the fold it seems. A common theme of their comments about media bias now since Obama has won always contains some version of corporate or corporation, Faux news, Drug Limbaugh, right wing noise machine, Karl Rove, or some rant about having to push what sells, so I thought I was being consistant with my select cutting and pasting.
I read alot of proggressive blogs and it seems a common thread to talk about the corporate media and how liberal media bias is a myth. Why do you think they hold those opinions?
We need a special Hall of Fame for posts this fucking retarded.
“Like, I read a lot of Republican blogs, dude, and they all think Obama is teh suxxorz, why do you think he is so mad leet?” Christ.
Ouroboros: viruses cannot hide from a complete re-format of the hard drive and a re-install of the O.S. Once a computer has had the power shut off, the memory is wiped, and the hard drive is the only place data can survive.
You also might consider getting a USB external drive and backing up the C: drive to it once you have things working again. Then, you disconnect the USB drive until you either back up the C: drive again or need to restore the C: drive when the next virus hits.
Fox News has hired Howard Wolfson, former Hillary Clinton aide, and he said the following:
Well BMoe I am honestly perplexed how anyone could possibly think that the media is not biased left. Shit half the Democrat party even spent the last 6 months whining about the bias. I can not really come up with a good answer myself so I freakin asked his opinion. Is not that the point of the internet maybe like you say I am too retarded.
PS Fuck your mother.
PH, have you ever voted in a presidential election before?
– Actually PH, the fact that you don’t have to “select” very carefully when you cut and paste from Left blogs, (the message is the facts), and you see the same narrative universally touted everywhere you look, using a tiny bit of that introspection, even a spider monkey knows one of two things jas to be true.
– Either an entire group of people are just restating the obvious factual situation, or its a universally accepted lie for partisan reasons.
– When the facts don’t jib with the narrative. the case that applies is pretty straight forward. (ie, 9/11 was an inside job, ect.)
– That happens so consistently with the Left, (and it never corrects, even when the idea is totally debunked as GB laid out) that after awhile it gets to the point where no one can take what your side says seriously anymore.
– As I said to you the other day, even Marx hinself warned that too much use of the same ploys over too long a time and you’re going to get caught. The problem with the Jackass fallacy is it has a limited shelf life, which is another way of saying you can omly prop up a propaganda campaign for just so long.
– For instance, now with Iraq continuing to move toward a stable ME democracy, look at what the progressives are doing, even as everyone else but them see and admit the truth.
– When the propaganda campaign fails the Lefy seems unable to correct course, and end up stuck in the “theory of holes” trap. which doesn’t speak well of their “elitist” attitudes.
Progg,
If we want to read the drivel posted at DU and Kos, we’ll visit DU and Kos. You really aren’t doing us (or yourself) any favors by foisting these steaming piles of shit on us, and feigning ignorance about why we take umbrage at your incessant distractions and inane questions has grown tiresome in the extreme.
If you’d like the regulars here to take you seriously, you need to do a lot less cutting and pasting, and a lot more thinking and reasoning. While you’re at it, stop treating the regulars here as though they were your own private stable of researchers. If you really want to know more about media bias, do your own research. There’s a variety of search engines available to help you, and trust me — Google won’t mock you for asking dumb questions and wasting its time.
Alternatively, you could just cut and paste Karl’s analyses into the comment threads at your favorite progressive web communities, and compare and contrast the reaction you get from those crowds to the reaction you get here. Write it up as a ten-page report, single-spaced, 12-point type. And watch your margins.
Yes 711. Whats your point?
Well BMoe I am honestly perplexed how anyone could possibly think that the media is not biased left.
And I am honestly perplexed at how anyone could think Obama is qualified to be President of the United States, and then I remember, oh yeah, most proggresives and lefties are delusional idiots.
