Chase Utley, as is his wont, tripled in what would prove to be the winning run against Atlanta tonight. His arrival at the plate for the at-bat prompted the following exchange on the Braves network:
Joe Simpson: “I’d be careful on the the first pitch with this guy.”
Skip Carey: “I’d be careful on all the subsequent ones, too.”
The reason Olby is no longer a sportscaster* and is confined to ranting like a skid row wino on MSNBC is because he could never see the humor in an exchange like that. Ever.
*Other than it was “beneath his towering intellect”, that is.
The braves broadcast team isn’t as good as it used to be back when they sucked but they are pretty good. Great broadcast teams around the nation include the Nationals, the Diamondbacks, the Mets, the Dodgers (can’t beat Vin Scully), the Giants, and of course the Mariners. Generally speaking the worse a team is, the better the broadcast team has to be to keep interest.
I can’t wait for my Phillies to perform their annual swoon in June or July.
The injury-riddled Rockies have started to turn it around a bit, cooling off the red-hot Brewers and stringing together 4 straight. Holliday and Barmes will be back off the DL soon; and the starting pitching (beyond Cook, who’s been great all season) is starting to come around, with Francis and Reynolds both throwing gems.
I still think this particular team, with all its young starting pitching, is a year away. But they weathered a bad injury storm, 8-straight losses, and 13 straight defeats on the road, and are still only 10 back. Getting Hawpe back the last two days has netted two game winning homers. Can’t wait to get Holliday and Barmes back, and put Spillbourghs in center (to replace Tavares), with Barmes at short until Tulo returns, at which time he’ll take over at second, most likely, with Jeff Baker getting some starts there, as well.
Then, the Rockies offense will finally be back to full strength. Meanwhile, Reynolds and Jimenez need to continue to get starts under their belts, and Francis has to complete his turnaround.
Should be an interesting second half.
Back when Harry Carray was broadcasting in St.Louis he used to sit in his broadcast booth just above the screen, with a big fishing net at the ready in order to catch foul balls, and with a few “Bush Bavarian Beers” always visible at his side, if not his lips.
He often commented on the crowd he saw in his vicinity. One day he noted a couple who had an interesting m.o.: “He kisses her on the strikes, and she kisses him on the balls.”
I swear I heared it, honest!
Bite your tongue, CPO Sharkey.
– Well Jeff, we’ll be up there soon, and because the Pads are finally acting like they’re interested, it should make for some hood baseball.
– We got a walkoff homer in the bottom of the 10th from Scott Hairston tonight against the Mets to give them an all-time record of four 2-1 games in a row. Thats the third time this year he’s done a walkoff dinger to win a game. Guys on a roll, both in his hitting and his fielding,
Who would have thought something like that had never been done before. Thats weird when you think of all the major league games that have been played since Abner threw out the first ball.
– If they do it again tomorrow I’ll buy a lottery ticket, figuring the greegree has landed in San Diego.
The Braves sure have a great team this year, I hope they can make it all the way to the Championships.

I don’t know. It’s almost like they’re learning how to win.
Utley can field, too.
But, hey, Phillies fans used to boo Mike Schmidt.
That may be the funniest thing I read all day.
Hey, the Braves will be a good team, if we can get a friggan’ bullpen.
I was watching the Indy 500 once. Paul Page, of course, but the color was being done by Tom Sneva.
First, there was an accident as a car understeered and hit the wall.
Page: “Something must have broke in his suspension. He didn’t even brake. I don’t see any skidmarks.”
Sneva: “Well, I can guarantee you there are skidmarks in the cockpit.”
Last week when the Phils dismantled the Reds Utley was a bigger story than Junior, who sat out a day due to “general soreness.” I know he’s older, but c’mon. Saw a lot more giddyap from ol’ Junior after those games.
Looks to this Phillies fan that they are using up all of their post-break stuff, pre-break. And it’s going to be a loooong late summer.
Skip sounds positively senile these days as a rule. It’s like he got old in about 12 minutes.
Great to see a Phillies post! Watching them dismantle the now basically average Braves is so delightful. Nothing more fun than mocking that retarded “tomohawk chop” when they blow a game. Go PHILS!
Clear Channel has destroyed WGST. After The Kimmer was fired, I moved to XM.
A story I’d pay to read would be about how terrestrial radio blew it.
Yeah, the chop has gone from annoying to just plain pathetic, in that special pleading kind of way.
I don’t understand #16, doesn’t XM just carry the road or home (I forget which) radio feed?
As for those who say the Phillies will swoon… I’m too superstitious to say what I really think outright, but let’s just say I disagree. The swoon months in recent years have been April-June. June is here and it may still happen, and the interleague games loom as the perfect time, but I just don… not gonna say it.
SWEEPING THE BRAVES!!
Jeff, the Rocks have had three pianos dropped on their heads with injuries. Rarely have I seen a good team so snakebit. When they were swept in Philly they looked like a team that was beaten down and lacking in confidence. Who could blame them.
Hang tough! Your team has too much young talent, notably pitching, to be down for long. Especially in the pit of mediocrity that is the NL West this year.
