Reliance On Foreign Oil! [Dan Collins]

Teh horror!

Meanwhile, via Fausta, comes this:

China, Venezuela and now Brazil soon to be drilling off the coast of Florida while America sits on its own natural resources

And I’m sure they’ll do a bang-up job of it, too, seeing as their so deeply invested in making sure there are no spills or other environmental nastiness.

Drill Here. Drill Now. Pay Less.

I think that would make an awesome women’s tank-top.

or “Drill My Salt Domes, Baby!”

I would wear that on a cleavage shirt, yes.

  3. MayBee says:

We better watch the Chinese. Japan is always accusing them of doing the “I drink your milkshake!” thing.

  4. SarahW says:

I was hoping for a solution involving more refinement.

No tank-top but for just $10 you can get a bumper sticker. Can’t wait to show mine off in the faculty parking lot.

    Update on Mrs. O! tape:

For about 30 minutes, Michelle Obama launched into a rant about the evils of America, and how America is to blame for the problems of Africa. Michelle personally blamed President Clinton for the deaths of millions of Africans and said America is responsible for the genocide of the Tutsis and other ethnic groups. She then launched into an attack on “whitey”, and talked about solutions to black on black crime in the realm of diverting those actions onto white America. Her rant was fueled by the crowd: they reacted strongly to what she said, so she got more passionate and enraged, and that’s when she completely loses it and says things that have made the mouths drop of everyone who’s seen this.

The “tape” is a DVD that Trinity United sold on its website, and possibly offered free for download up until March 2008 when Trinity’s site was scrubbed and the DVDs were no longer offered for sale.

As Glen Beck said, “I’d drill through a caribou’s skull for oil.”

    Indeed!

  8. JohnAnnArbor says:

That map misses the Great Lakes. There’s likely oil under Lake Michigan, but we can’t drill there either. Salt mines under Detroit and Cleveland imply there could be nearby oil, too. There are 1000 or so wellheads in Michigan, I read a while back, already…..

  9. Dan Collins says:

Well, as far as Detroit goes, I think that would be a fine use of Kelo.

  10. JohnAnnArbor says:

There are large residential areas with no houses because of abandonment, etc. But 1 guess as to the reaction if oil drilling is proposed in Detroit but not the suburbs.

  11. Roboc says:

Here is the response I received from Senator Bill Nelson(D)Fla, regarding drilling off the coast of Florida:

Thank you for contacting me regarding drilling off of Florida’s coast and in other areas of the United States.

I’m concerned about how oil drilling could destroy Florida’s $50-billion, tourist-driven economy and our fragile environment. I also believe drilling off Florida would place our nation’s military readiness at risk, because it would interfere with military testing and training in the Eastern Gulf of Mexico. Further, studies have shown there isn’t enough oil in the Eastern Gulf or the Arctic Refuge to significantly impact supply, ease gas prices, or reduce our dependence on foreign oil.

Instead, I believe we must develop a long-term energy strategy that will, among other things, reduce our dependency on foreign oil and our consumption of fossil fuels. I believe we can achieve this goal by raising the fuel economy of cars and trucks, providing incentives for the purchase of more flex-fuel and hybrid vehicles, and by increasing research and development into technologies like cellulosic ethanol as a renewable transportation fuel. Another way to lessen our nation’s reliance on fossil fuels is to spur the development of renewable electrical power.

I appreciate your taking the time to be involved and informed about this matter. Please do not hesitate to contact me again.

He failed to address what we could do in the next five years as I had asked, and conveniently left out the part about other countries drilling off the Florida coast.

Dan! I have a house to sell in Detroit. Can you all start playing along that Detroit is a wonderful place to live and raise a family until I’m able to unload it find a buyer?

  13. the wolf says:

Well, Senator Nelson can take comfort in the fact that, at the pace the price of oil is going, there won’t be a tourism industry to worry about anymore.

  14. JohnAnnArbor says:

    OK.

:) Detroit is a wonderful place to live and raise a family! :)

  15. Slartibartfast says:

As long as Bill Nelson doesn’t think there’s enough oil there, it doesn’t matter whether other countries drill there!

Any idjit could see that we don’t use ALL of the Eastern Gulf. Heck, we don’t use the Eastern Gulf to any serious extent.

  16. CelticDragon says:

Hey I’ve got an idea! How about Texas annexes the Eastern Gulf, and WE drill there. The enviro-whackos can call us names, it’s ok, we’ve got big shoulders…

  17. Roboc says:

As Glen Beck said, “I’d drill through a caribou’s enviro-douche’s skull for oil.” Fixed it!

  18. Slartibartfast says:

Send that map back to Senator Nelson, Dan, and tell him one of his constituents thinks he’s a douchebag for not knowing how much of the gulf is used for military exercises.

  19. Slartibartfast says:

Besides, with a long enough straw, you can drink those milkshakes from elsewhere.

  20. Carin -BONC says:

Thank you JohnAA. There will be a little something extra in your envelop this week.

  21. Roboc says:

Yeah, Kwame Kilpatrick was living the dream in Motown!

  22. Merovign says:

So, basically, we’re worried about environmental impact and spills and harm to tourism and so on, so we’re going to let China drill there instead of doing it ourselves, says Bill Nelson, (D)umbass.

That has to be the dumbest motherfucker on the planet.

It’s not the “No Zone,” It’s the “We’re suicidal idiot dumbass jerkoffs” zone.

  23. bergerbilder says:

Of course, all those supertankers plowing through the Gulf of Mexico with imported crude on their way to Houston and New Orleans don’t endanger the tourist industry of Florida at all. What is it – maybe only 99% of all maritime oil spills come from tankers?

The taxes that are taken from my pay every month don’t significantly impact the federal budget, the deficit, or the debt.

Yet they continue to drill into my wallet.

    Huh.

  26. Mikey NTH says:

JAA: Isabella County and north. The wells along US-127 are running, and I don’t doubt that those in Crawford, Otsego, and Antrim Counties are going also. In Oakland County they have natural gas, the GM Proving Grounds in Milford have gas wells and there is one in Camp Dearborn (I saw that one being drilled when I worked there).

  27. Mikey NTH says:

#13 and #15 – You forgot to mention what kind of family. :)

#22 The Manoogian Mansion is nice, and is right on the river near Belle Isle. A nice view and a geat location to see the Gold Cup races from.

  30. jon says:

If we open up our waters for drilling, our waters will be open for drilling. That’s all. If I was part of an oil company, I’d love to have the rights to drill in ANWR, coastal waters, and all sorts of places, but I doubt I’d do any actual drilling. The thing is, the price is going up, so drilling now is stupid. Especially since we can let other countries (and other companies) drill their oil while our rights/untapped fields get more valuable. And then I can be both patriotic and make a huge killing on my investment.

The refineries are at peak capacity right now. Drill more local oil now? Why? So tankers can sit offshore in a line? Unless we socialize our oil companies, there’s no way to make them do it anyhow. And if we do, we’re throwing away a valuable resource. What’s the fucking point?

  31. Dan Collins says:

You don’t think that if British Petroleum looked into tapping those reserves there would be sudden interest in building refineries? But let’s just say (for the sake of argument) that American companies are prohibited from drilling: what’s in it for them?

  32. B Moe says:

If we open up our waters for drilling, our waters will be open for drilling. That’s all.

The deal right now in some of the coastal waters is that domestic companies need permission that foreign companies don’t. The state of Florida for instance, won’t allow any domestic drilling at all, but can’t restrict foreign companies. As long as they stay 12 miles out, in international waters, they can drill away. I am not sure how all this works, but I am pretty convinced we are getting screwed and letting valuable oil get taken from right under our noses.

  33. Rusty says:

Instapundit has a link to an interesting article on the Bakken oil field in N. Dakota.

Jon. That would be a great idea except that importing foreign oil to refine is expensive even for the oil companies. They can make a better profit by developing the oil in N America.

  34. McGehee says:

The thing is, the price is going up, so drilling now is stupid.

Exactly backward: the price is going up, so drilling now is PROFITABLE.

  35. jon says:

McGeehee, you’re right, but it will be even more profitable a year from now. And even more profitable a year after that. And the next years? Even more profitable! These oil companies are not in a panic about making their next payroll, they’re in it for the long haul. And the long haul is looking good.

Opening up new areas for exploration will not result in an immediate increase in drilling. The price is where it is for world-wide economic reasons, and most projections have it going up, not down. So there is little incentive for oil companies to increase production, plus the refining capacity isn’t there, and why invest in either when you can sit on your hands as your product’s price is increasing on its own?

  36. Rusty says:

128 dollara a barrel is a huge incentive. Athabasca tar sands are on line and producing product. If the competition is doing it then others will get in line as well. If ANWAR were opened up at noon tomorrow oil company helos would be planting flags by 12:05. Count on it.

  37. jon says:

A claim is a claim. Actual pumping? To be produced at what facility? If more expensive to produce, then it makes sense to do it later when the end price is higher. If cheaper to produce, then it makes sense to do it later when the price is higher. I just haven’t had anyone convince me that actual drilling will occur as soon as things open up.

It looks like a giveaway of public resources to a series of someones who will sit on those resources until they can make the most money on it. And it looks like that won’t be tomorrow.
