Obama’s ears may not fit on Mt. Rushmore, brain another matter [Karl]

From the leader of the Reality-Based Community:

Democrat Barack Obama paid an unscheduled late-night visit to Mount Rushmore Friday, visiting the national memorial at closing time and joking that his ears were too big to ever be included in such a display.

***

He did express curiosity about the filming of a chase scene in “North by Northwest,” Alfred Hitchcock’s 1959 classic starring Cary Grant and Eva Marie Saint that included a death-defying scramble over Rushmore’s presidential faces.

“How did they get up there in the first place?” he asked ranger Wesley Jensen.

“They didn’t. It was a movie set,” Jensen told him.

“Pretty spiffy, isn’t it,” said the Illinois senator, summing up his overall impressions.

SPOILER ALERT for Obama below the fold:

In Alfred Hitchcock’s later movie Psycho (1960), Janet Leigh is not actually killed in the shower.  It was make-believe.  In fact, if you watch closely, the knife never pierces the skin of Leigh’s character.

(h/t Memeorandum. A largely harmless gaffe, mostly demonstrating the establishment media’s willingness to not make an issue of it.)

Are you trying to say, that M.Douglas did not actually have sex with S. Stone ?
or H.Ford did not put his hand into A.Hetche’ pants ?

  2. SarahW says:

James Mason, on the other hand, was really, really, evil.

  3. SarahW says:

He had a terrible crush on this underaged girl and completely ruined her life.

Speaking of monuments: Stonehenge Decoded on National Geographic tomorrow.

  5. happyfeet says:

The whole movie was based on a lie. They just made it up. Baracky exposed the liars, so I don’t think you can spin like it was Baracky who’s clueless. Baracky will never allow you to go back to your lives as usual – uninvolved, uninformed. The scales are falling from my eyes. Shit now I have to vacuum.

In other news, Tom Cruise really is a midget whackjob that does not race in NASCAR, fly for the US Navy, jump over speeding motorcycles, etc …

  7. Spies, Brigands, and Pirates - UMBA says:

Next you’ll tell me that Star Trek isn’t actually filmed in space, and that those aren’t real dinosaurs in Jurassic Park.

    I’m depressed.

  8. Martin says:

I think you understate the brilliance of Obama’s mind. Just this morning, Andrew Sullivan was so inspired by Obama’s looming nomination victory that he posted the following:

“Imagine if the Iraq war had been planned by Obama’s campaign managers. You think we would have had no post-invasion strategy?”

    ET – not an alien.

    – Watching todays Dem hearings on the Fl./MI prinary clusterfuck is shaping up to be the mother of all political meltdowns.

    – The tone so far seems to lean heavily toward making sure what ever happens Obama comes out at least as strong as he would be by present count approaches, and Hillery supporters are getting more and more agitated and vociferous as things go along.

    – We’re also finding out that the common statement that Obama did not campaign in Mich. is a lie. Apparently his camp conducted an under the table “uncommited vote” writein operation.

    – What I hear is an unbelievable amount of political tap dancing that seems to be aimed at simply avoiding a head to head contest between himself and Hillery, letting the voters decide, both in Florida and Michigan.

    – Whats wrong with the Democratic party that leads them to want to rig an election by not simply letting their people vote for their free choice, and why would a party set up an elaborate, hyper complicated system of delegates, simply to avoid such a clearly democratic process.

    – Just one more reason to reject the Democrats. Why bother. Your vote as a citizen doesn’t count.

ET was left in a house with crazy white people while his parents ran off to do other things and he turned to substance abuse to help him work through his issues and then he learned to gain acceptance by imitating the white people and used a psychic link to make people help him and in the end he ascended.

  12. Big Bang Hunter (pumping you up) says:

    – Senator Levin is presently holding forth, and the dirty laundry he is airing in public concerning the inside operations of the DNC in its smokeless filled rooms is riveting.

    – No wonder these people find themselves embroiled in a circular firing squad. Damn Sam.

    – ET – The first example of a new product introduction (reese’s pieces) on a cosmic scale.

  13. happyfeet says:

Also did you know the guy who played the big brother in ET became a postal worker? I think that’s sort of not a fun fact. Wikipedia lists his date of birth and then specifies “years active.” That’s freaking harsh.

  14. sashal says:

Hunter, put on NBC, they show French Open.
Better viewing pleasure , then pathetic comedy with DNC in a supportive role.

  15. In other news, Dan Quayle was heard to scream “you have got to be freaking kidding me!!”

  16. Big Bang Hunter (pumping you up) says:

    – sashal – It is good for NBC to stick to sports coverage. They have shown as an organization, from their news anchors to their top management, that impartial political reporting is not their bag.

  19. happyfeet says:

Hey. Quick question. What’s going on here? The AP says…

At least 21 American troopers were killed in May – four in non-hostile incidents. That’s one more than the lowest monthly figure of the war set in February 2004.

But the people who usually get cited for doing the counting report only 19 deaths of American soldiers, which would be the lowest ever.

I don’t understand how the AP is getting its number.

  20. Speaking of monuments: Stonehenge Decoded on National Geographic tomorrow.

Don’t be so quick to trust NGC anymore: Their blockbuster special on the Gospel of Judas is turning out to be 99 44/100% spotlight-mongering sensationalism.

  21. Spies, Brigands, and Pirates - UMBA says:

I don’t understand how the AP is getting its number.

    They’re a pack of liars?

  22. happyfeet says:

Oh. Here’s a link to the AP report. There has to be an explanation. The AP wouldn’t lie just to take the shine off of success in Iraq. Would they? For real?

  23. cranky-d says:

Stonehenge was almost completely rebuilt in the early to mid 1900s. Looking for clues of anything there is quite likely a waste of time.

  24. Baldilocks brought up a good point on Ace: it seems like all the basic, commonly shared aspects of American life he’s ignorant of.

  25. tee bee says:

I like the part about Obama visiting Mount Rushmore at closing time.

Rushmore never closes. Ever. Except for the top part where they landed the plane in North By Northwest. Only the Visitor’s Center and concessions close at night, but the monument is perpetually accessible.

They must’ve told him that so they could get him outta there quicker.

  26. happyfeet says:

Baracky seems aloof like that sometimes, but have you noticed that all these “gaffes” people are always attacking him for only happen when he doesn’t have a teleprompter to read? It’s like they just sit there waiting for the teleprompter to be turned off and then they pounce on him. No fairs, but that’s politics I guess.

  27. Big Bang Hunter (pumping you up) says:

    – #26 – So then, in point of fact, Stonehenge was actually square instead of circular, and rightfully should have been called “Barbecue pit-henge”?

  28. Roboc says:

DNC hearings, “Samuel Johnson’s right about Olsen Johnson being right…”

  29. Big Bang Hunter (pumping you up) says:

    – So far: “Mexican standoff between O! supporters and Hill supporters, with a definate black/white undertone”.

    – The Reps couldn’t do better than these hearings if they rented billvoards coast to coast that said: “The modern Democratic party: “We have been negotiating with ourselves since 1968!”

  30. Roboc says:

I thought Donna Brazil was going to do a “yo mamma” joke.

  31. Rob Crawford says:

    – So far: “Mexican standoff between O! supporters and Hill supporters, with a definate black/white undertone”.

There’s so much racism in that statement I find myself denouncing you out of reflex.

  32. Big Bang Hunter (pumping you up) says:

    – All they need at this point to make the final hijacking of the Dem party by the Socialists complete, is Waters wagging her finger and threatening to Nationalize the DNC.

    – Senator Nelson just spent 30 minutes telling the committee in every way he could without just saying it outright, that if they don’t count the votes as cast in Florida, flawed or not, they can kiss their asses goodbye come the general election. Ouch. O!.

  33. Big Bang Hunter (pumping you up) says:

    – Rob, what can I say…..”We report – you decide”…but simply to preserv the victimhood sacred magic technicolor great coat of the Democratic party I will denounce myself for having the temerity of actually repeating things that the committee says. Thats a no-no in this years election cycle. After all, its good enough for the candidates, so why should the committee be afforded any less courtesies.

  34. Drumwaster says:

I will denounce myself for having the temerity of actually repeating things that the committee says

*Tweet!* Fifteen yard penalty for self-denunciation without written permission. And ten “Hail Obama”s. (Or should that be “Heil”?)

You should also have given them time to re-write the History so that it all turns out to be Bush’s fault.

  35. Saul Goode says:

    C’mon…it’s Baracky. You can’t criticize his gaffes…nor his associations….nor his policies….nor his race…nor his wife…

…everything else is fair game though

The Simpsons, Family Guy, and South Park are still real, right?

I can’t believe that Colonel Brandt ever ruined the life of an under-aged girl. It must be in some other alternate reality.

  40. psycho... says:

This was probably more of a stupid lie than a ‘tard moment (though he has an amazing number of those, for a supposed non-idiot).

No one who’s seen the movie would think it wasn’t a set — it’s not the right color, even — but if the RUSHMORE FUN FAX pick-up lines he skimmed on the way into town mentioned it, and he’s so accustomed to getting over on suckers unbusted that he doesn’t bother even thinking through his lies anymore (which clearly he doesn’t, since they’re not plausible), he’d stupidly “express” such a “curiosity” without even thinking about what he was saying.

The only way to defend him on this is with a positively spun version of the above — a pro-sociopathy argument, basically, for his faking “curiosity” about things he doesn’t know anything about. Anyone flown that shit yet?

  41. The Apologist says:

I think everyone’s being too hard on 01

I wondered much the same thing when I saw Team America the first time.

  42. troy mcclure says:

Of course, there was that episode of Buck Rogers, where he kept getting flashes of being at Mt. Rushmore; while
on trial for collaborating with those who started the nuclear war; it turns out he was hypnotized to pretend to belong to the cabal of military officers who wanted to launch a first strike in order to smoke them out. But
that never happened either. Can you believe we could still loose to this guy

  43. Cincinnatus says:

James Cameron’s remake of North by Northwest will include a set of Mt Rushmore that’s 10% larger then the original. “If you know about the lighting that I prefer to use, it just makes sense.”

  44. Super site! We are loving it!! I will come back again – taking your rss feeds also, thanks
