The Surge: Two Perspectives [Dan Collins]

Logan Murphy is excited about the latest gloom from The Guardian.

Meanwhile, the US military claims that foreign fighters are leaving Iraq.

Wretchard has his own views.  Who ya gonna believe?

    But don’t question his patriotism.

I heard Obama was claiming that every family in the USA was paying about 100 a month more in gas costs due to the Iraq war. Even if true (I thought the oil traders had about 10-25 $ a barrel estimate added due to international risk including non-Iraqi areas), weren’t the Dem’s screaming about how the cost of the war was not shared by everyone? Is this not a shared cost?

Eh, what do I know; I am just a “Typical White Person.”

    This&That

    Blues Brothers Hopey Changy Remake:

    Elwood, “Illinois Nazis.”

Jake, “I hate Illinois Nazis’….ideas. Not the Illinois Nazis themselves of course, as they are part of the White Experience and their anger is justified ‘cause of the current oppressive culture that keeps their economic and sexual opportunities quite limited. We should calmly wait here in traffic while they freely express their deplorable but wholly understandable and justifiable ideas.”

  4. From Logan’ article:
They feel that they are doing the dirty work that Americans should be doing…

Should read: “They feel that they are doing the dirty work that Americans have heretofore been doing for them…”

  5. Wretchard of Filipino extraction, you know. His country is under direct, armed assault by Muslim separatists, so it would behoove us to heed his insights in the coming years. Just imagine how you’d feel if your English-speaking, Catholic, westernized country were being invaded by the MILF.

  6. Pablo says:

A MILF invasion? I’m totally down with that. Bring it on!

    What’s that you say?

    Oh, nevermind.

  7. nishizonoshinji says:

you know…everytime we have success [like in the surge], we have taken the adversary culture and understood it well enough to bricolage it.
i wrote this 3 years ago.
shrieking, “your culture teh eevul satan! (a la malkin and spencer)”, while possibly having elements of truth and being satisfying in a trimuphalist bigot sort of way, is emminently counterproductive and profoundly unsuccessful.

  8. Major John says:

Hmmm. Being where I am and all, I’d have to say that the Grauniad is off the mark. But then again, I am here helping an Iraqi Army division do the dirty work of defending it’s own country, so who would listen to me. Fascist oppressor that I am…

  9. nishizonoshinji says:

    and stupid…i forgot stupid.

  10. nishizonoshinji says:

    im sorry….that should have been,
    YOUR RELIGION TEH EEVUL SATAN!

  11. Slartibartfast says:

I’d have to say that the Grauniad is off the mark.

If they’re ever on the mark, it’s not because they meant to be.

I’m always wishing you well, Major John. BTW, is there a promotion in the works? It seems to me, sometimes, that there are parts of DoD where a LtCol and a $6.00 will get you a toffee frappucino at Starbuck’s. You almost can’t turn around without stepping on one.

  12. happyfeet says:

My perspective on the surge is that it is very helpful and I am very proud that America is doing so much to make the world a better place. Most people don’t go out of their way a lot to liberate people from sadistic tyrants and then hang in there with them so they have a chance to build a better more just society. We’re so cool.

  13. MayBee says:

    Major John!
Are you able to get good beverages there? I’ve been very concerned about that for you.

  14. nishizonoshinji says:

feets there is no altruism in nature.
we trying to destroy the substrate that nurtures terroism in a single state, and hopin it will spread from there.
if something else looked more promisng, we would have done that.

we cant afford to be the world police.
for one thing it would be prohibitavely expensive, and for another that would alsom make us the world dictators.

  15. happyfeet says:

It’s the spirit of the thing, nishi, way apart from the strategery. I doubt any of our guys wake up and think about destroying substrate. They just want to help make things better I think. It’s not at all about being the world’s police. Not anymore anyway. It’s about who we are. Do we keep our promises and see our commitments through or do we instead embrace a nerdy socialist third-world wannabe and his skeezey wife who will kick our new Iraqi friends and allies to the curb while promising to help us maybe be somewhat less contemptible?

I know who we are. We’re gonna see this through.

  16. JD says:

Major John – APO? I still have a couple cases of Kool Aid singles and Crystal light waiting to get shipped to you.

Our prayers, as always. And wishbone to, if you are out there.

  17. Pablo says:

    Major John, thank you.

    nishi, quit babbling.

  18. happyfeet says:

Hey JD. I have his APO. Email me at happyfeet47 at yahoo.com and I can get it to you.

  19. happyfeet says:

    there go

  20. nishizonoshinji says:

kick our new Iraqi friends and allies to the curb

malkin and her ilk already do that everyday.
why would it be any different?

  21. nishizonoshinji says:

    consider Dubai Ports World.
malkin was too stupid to recognize that as bonus stroke in the WoT.
it was a freebie for us, infecting the arab world with capitalism.

  22. McGehee says:

    nishi, quit babbling.

She doesn’t understand because “babbling” contains too many syllables.

  23. Pablo says:

malkin and her ilk already do that everyday.

Really? Consider 1/17 through 1/24. And then float your bullshit again.

The difference between you and Malkin is that while you’re both kinda screechy, she usually has her facts straight.

  24. happyfeet says:

Oh. I am 100% with nishi on Dubai Ports World. You can go back and look I think. That was a really embarrassing hysterical overreaction on the right and kind of hard to explain. My sense at the time was that the hysterical people – Michelle and pals – got the ball rolling and the stalwart Rs in Congress who knew better still knew damn well that the media would crucify them a la Katrina so they caved as fast as possible. It’s not really a lot related to Iraq all that much though.

  25. B Moe says:

    im sorry….that should have been,
    YOUR RELIGION TEH EEVUL SATAN!

Yeah, I can’t fucking stand people who broadly stereotype whole religions like that.

  26. McGehee says:

she usually has her facts straight.

    HOMOPHOBE!!!!1!!

  27. daleyrocks says:

I thought that small breasted confused dwarf Asian bigoted troll said she was leaving last week.

    She Lies!

She also pimps herself even more than Joe Wilson. Amazing and sad!

  28. Major John says:

Thanks JD, hfeet, Pablo and Slart. (I am going to have my packet sent to the September LTC board, BTW). I was a new MAJ when I went to Afghanistan, now I am an old MAJ in Iraq. When I get home I will, Allah willing and the wadi don’t rise, become a new LTC. The Pentagon may be full of ’em, but there aren’t so many in the 10,000 member ILARNG.

Oh, and it is 93 degrees here and the gnats are out in Biblical Plague-like force…

  29. PalmettoTiger says:

    “consider Dubai Ports World.

Hi folks. “Long time reader/couple of times poster” etc, etc. Actually, DPW did complete the purchase of P&O’s other operations. The US operations were acquired by AIG. Dubai is already doing very well in capitalism as are other Dubai based businesses diversifying into different markets, including operations in the US but thanks for playing.

The P&O/DPW deal was approved and ready to go when one of the port authorities whom P&O had a lease with became more than a little concerned that they were not going to be able to recover the investments from DPW they had made in the facilities there which P&O had contracted to use. Turns out that the port authorities of NY/NJ had the same concerns so when the original party went to their friends and contacts in DC, the good Senator from NY saw a great opportunity to attack the Republicans on national security before the elections. That the issue which spilled across the tv screens and newspapers wasn’t in any way grounded in fact was franklu beside the point. Consider how many of the talking heads or commentors actually were involved in enforcing security compliance.

(the short answer is “none that I saw” and I followed it pretty closely)

In short, the deal went through despite the Dem’s scoring some short-term points and the Repubs caving, all because most people in this country have zip of an idea about maritime security or the industry in general (like how many major seaports have terminals that are either leased or outright owned by foreign-based companies).

Sorry, I’m in the idustry and the DPW thing is still a sore-spot.

    Best,
    PT
