What To Do With That “Rebate” [Dan Collins]

Earlier this week, someone, I think maybe Surber, was wondering what the initial steps in creating a new political party would be.  Well, here comes the “rebate.”  If enough of us had enough discipline to put it forward towards such a venture, how would we best manage it?  (I mean, apart from sending it to Jeff and letting him manage it for us.)

    I want a volvo.

  2. Dan Collins says:

That’s just sad, hf. You’re not even married.

  3. Smarty says:

I am probably getting a q-jet or a locker for my truck. Buy American baby!!

Of course, a bitchin’ gaming pc would be nice too.

  4. happyfeet says:

    No. Dude! The C30.

  5. happyfeet says:

In back it has this cool airlock thinger.

  6. happyfeet says:

    um, here

  7. happyfeet says:

I like those too but the deal is I want a little car cause of the parking malaise here in the city of angels. The volco one is like the fifth shortest car. And also I’m just way over the idea of a Mini if I ever really was sold on that for real and I like the Yaris a lot but it’s not me at all really and also that’s just a dumb name.

  8. happyfeet says:

Or I could like help start a new political party. Either-or really.

  9. Dan Collins says:

What about that boxy Scion thing? Too ugly?

The Impreza WRX STI is hot.

  10. happyfeet says:

Oh also volvo sells a pimpin version of the C30, but that’s not really for me.

Um. Tell them you heard it on the Glenn and Helen Show.

  11. happyfeet says:

I actually like the Scion TC a lot, it’s the car one, and really that’s a lot more realistic.

  12. Dan Collins says:

Ugh. I have to get a new job.

Or write a bestselling novel, or something.

  13. happyfeet says:

I think that’s supposed to be tc.

  14. happyfeet says:

I had to look that up. A Subaru? Dan.

  15. Dan Collins says:

Anybody need a not-very-evil not-very-genius? Plays well with otters.

  16. Dan Collins says:

I’ve had four, the least of which gave me 220k miles.

  17. happyfeet says:

Really? Oh. I think they never really caught on in Texas.

  18. happyfeet says:

But also it looks like a lawnmower.

  19. Dan Collins says:

I’ve had a ’49 Ford stakebed, a Buick Special, a Nova, a Honda Civic, a Buick Electra, a coupla mini vans, a Westfalia.

  20. Dan Collins says:

Yeah, that’s a 2006, though. It was emulating the deep ugliness of the Tribeca.

  21. happyfeet says:

My first car was a Nash. No lie. No. I’m not that old.

  22. Dan Collins says:

Very cool. You might be a recruit for Bolus one of these days.

  23. JD says:

    Chrome for the Harley !!!!!

Actually, will prolly get a PSP for the little one and a Wii for me. Once we get back in our house. Ugh.

  24. happyfeet says:

Oh. The 08 Imprezas look ok. I just looked. But they look like they’re about the same as the tc really. The tc looks really cool but mostly if you drop it a couple inches from what I’ve sort of noticed.

  25. Dan Collins says:

    http://www.subaru.com/sub/misc/2008/autoshow/ny0311/wrx/index.html

    I think that’s pretty hot.

Anyway, it looks like a new political movement’s not likely.

  26. Dan Collins says:

Yeah, JD, how’s the exile going?

  27. happyfeet says:

Oh. That’s way better than the ones I looked at. Also I like the Dodge I think Charger but I asked around and didn’t hear good things. That’s kind of sad.

  28. JD says:

My first car was one of the original full sized Ford Broncos. I have been destroying the environment for decades.

  29. Dan Collins says:

    Bully for you, JD.

But how’s the exile from the homestead going?

  30. JD says:

Dan – Couple more weeks. I am invading my home on Sunday, by myself, to watch Jr go for 3 wins in 3 starts. I refuse to watch another race on a small TV.

I once had a Subaru. Drove awesome. Quite quirky. The interior reminded me of an airplane cockpit, especially the steering wheel, which looked like a yoke.

  31. JD says:

Living in a hotel room sucks, to be sure.

  32. happyfeet says:

I would need my own coffeemaker from home.

  33. Dan Collins says:

Sorry, man. Hope you’re back soon.

Did it have the orange instrumentation?

  34. Karl says:

JD, my sympathies also… though you are boosting our “displaced persons” demo.

I was going to put my rebate into an apolitical party.

  35. JD says:

happy – there is a knock-off starbucky place in the lobby. I miss the plasma more.

Dan – I forgot all about the orange instruments. For the life of me I cannot remember what model is was.

Karl – If McCain selects Fuckabee, I am donating mine to Hill/Bill.

  36. happyfeet says:

Oh. You can leave a hotel room without having had coffee. When I was younger I wanted to be that guy.

  37. JD says:

There is a creepy 20/20 investigation on human plastination.

  38. McGehee says:

I am probably getting a q-jet or a locker for my truck.

Cherry Bombs for mine. Besides the hypermasculinist rumble, it’ll increase my gas mileage from 0.013 to 0.0130001

  39. happyfeet says:

    I had to google that.

The plastination technique replaces bodily fluids and fat with reactive polymers, such as silicone rubber, epoxy resins, or polyester: in a first phase solvent gradually replaces bodily fluids in a cold solvent bath (freeze substitution). After dehydration the specimen is put in a solvent bath at room temperature for defatting. The dehydrated and defatted specimen is then placed into a polymer solution. The solvent is then brought to a boil in a vacuum and continuously extracted from the specimen; the evaporating solvent creates a volume deficit within the specimen drawing the polymer gradually into the tissue. After the process of forced impregnation the specimen is cured with gas, light, or heat, depending on the type of polymer used.

I don’t get how they create a vacuum. This process sounds expensive.

  40. daleyrocks says:

JD – Do you count as a homeless veteran right now, you know, to pump up the stats for the NY Times?

  41. JD says:

daley – yup. we are amongst the teeming masses of homeless resulting from Bush’s disasterous economic policies, the war, and global warming.

  42. JD says:

happy – It was really quite distrubing. There is an exhibition of plastination touring the US right now. It seems like some of the “models” are executed Chinese political dissidents.

Gives a whole new perspective on those fascist Republicans.

  43. I’m getting a .44 special and a TX concealed carry permit. I’ve already got my own political party.

    yours/
    peter.

  44. I’m getting a .44 special and a TX concealed carry permit.

ooooooh, I hadn’t thought about that. actually, i think we already spent ours on kitty x-rays. DON’T JUDGE ME!

  45. Nraendowment says:

There is only one possibility for this Californian; a brand-spankin’ new Glock 21. As the socialists here say,”for the children.”

  46. Rusty says:

Couple a hookers. Some cheap weed, and a room at the local Heritage Inn. Spreadin’ the wealth. Among other things.

  47. Swen Swenson says:

Ah good! I was afraid for a minute there that I’d be the only one buying a gun. It seems oddly appropriate..

  48. Dan Collins says:

I heard that you can save money on kitty x-rays if you buy a gun. Seems like an odd promotion, though . . .

  49. B Moe says:

I am a gainfully employed single white man with no children. If I ever get a check from the government I am going to frame that sonuvabitch and hang it over the mantle.

  50. geoffb says:

My first car was a 1953 Lincoln bought in ’63 for $100 when I was 15. Only drove it once as I didn’t have a license and my father needed it to drive to work. That winter he rear-ended a tree with it.

I’m trying to figure out how you guys are going to finagle new cars on the $600 checks. When they sent out the $300 ones in 2001 the $600 my wife and I got we used to pay for our wedding rings, preacher and food for our at home reception. That was pretty good shopping but if you can get a new Volvo for $600 or $1200 I’m game.

  51. Dan Collins says:

Naw, it’s going to help him put down the minimum for a decent loan, right, hf? I know he’s not going to lease, because he’s not a moron.

  52. happyfeet says:

No. HF is a moron for reals. Also he lives less than a half mile from work so the lease makes a bit of sense to at least run the numbers on. But the point really of the new car is for to go jobhunting in and sort of increase my zone, so that whole calculus is kinda shakey. I hate dealing with cars really so I’d have every intention of buying at the end. And I really wants that car. Why can’t I ever have anything nice?

  53. happyfeet says:

Also I’m debt free as of two days ago cause I finally finished buying that stupid degree.

  54. happyfeet says:

Also though I’ll wait til the end of summer at least before deciding anything so this infatuation could pass I guess.

  55. geoffb says:

Maybe this is the way you are doing it.

  56. happyfeet says:

Thanks. Now I just have to kind of take don’t be precipitous as a mantra. That’s something a friend of mine’s grandmother says all the time.

  57. Dan Collins says:

Into every life a little precipitation must precipitate.

  58. happyfeet says:

That’s just really dopey that Volvo ad. Which is not to say I didn’t just check to see if they were doing that around here.

  59. JD says:

I have heard of people being debt free. With yet another girl coming into our home, debt free will always be one of those ethereal concepts. We just passed the point where we have more equity in our home than we owe, which was a moment to celebrate.

  60. happyfeet says:

    I am also equity-free. Yay!

  61. JD says:

My Dad is a volvo guy – he had the one with the T-5 and now the 80. They are great cars. Great job re-branding them from their boxy origins.

  62. Dan Collins says:

Every time I buy a new appliance, I tell them Glenn sent me.

  63. happyfeet says:

It’ll be the first import ever in my family. Like my whole extended family. I guess if I can find a used one then I’ll be off the hook on that. I’ll look but I’m not promising.

  64. JD says:

My mother has a 60. She bought it used in Pasadena for a great deal.

  65. happyfeet says:

That would be cool if I could find one in the valley. I don’t think there are any actual dealerships here. Not in my zone anyway.

  66. JD says:

I had to talk her into it. She assumed that they were still real expensive. She got the 60 for less than 20K and it was only 2 years old.

  67. JD says:

Found it at a Chevy dealer.

  68. happyfeet says:

I will definitely look into it. I hope I get to be methodical about this but if I get a new job I’ll need a new car fast. And leasing a shiny new c30 is really a lot expedient. But it depends on how the sequence of events folds out. I want to enjoy the laid-backness I have going on through summer for sure.

  69. happyfeet says:

I just discovered that little car this week and I got excited is all. Not many of them around here for some reason. But every fifth car is a Yaris almost.

  70. Dan Collins says:

They should rename it a DINKis.

  71. happyfeet says:

Toyota has this one they don’t sell here I don’t think called the Aygo. That’s just all kinds of a bad name.

  72. bjtexs says:

    Aygo

I believe it’s Japanese for Fiery Deathtrap.

  73. JD says:

hf – order one from here in the midwest where they are more plentiful, and cheaper, and I will drive it out for you.

  74. happyfeet says:

Thanks! We might could do that. We’ll see this fall. It would be cool to deprive Sacramento and pals of the sales taxes too.

  75. Dan Collins says:

They might make you pay them when you register, haps. That’s what Teh People’s Rethuglic of VT does.

  76. happyfeet says:

You’re kidding. I’ll have to find out about that. Or just register it out of state. I’m white, you see.

  77. happyfeet says:

    Crap. That was out loud.

  78. JD says:

They will find a way to get you taxed, but you could still save a few thousand. You Cali folks pay thru the freaking nose.

  79. Dan Collins says:

    Just like pharoahs.

  80. happyfeet says:

All this research is gonna be a chore. California is my nemesis. On the other hand, it’s warm and sunny enough I can put the turtles out.

  81. Dan Collins says:

    Don’t tell Mitt.

  82. I like the Yaris a lot but it’s not me at all really and also that’s just a dumb name.

ha. I had an Echo and I loved it, but we sold it when RTO deployed the second time and I looked at the Yaris but didn’t like it as much so we wound up getting a Corolla. which cracks RTO up because I was always complaining about having to drive the “large” PT Cruiser and the Corolla takes up more space, but it drives better. I’m getting old.

  83. happyfeet says:

From what I’ve learned last couple weeks the Scion tc uses the Echo engine. So that’s good. That’s my fallback when I get real about not really being able to afford the volvo.

  84. my sister has a tc and seems happy about it. though it could be the cupholder lights. she’s funny that way.

  85. happyfeet says:

The cupholder lights really impressed me a lot too. I can’t remember which one I looked at that let you switch between three different colors. That was amazing, but also I worry that the technology will end up in the hands of the Chinese.

  86. JD says:

hf – you could buy good old american muscle, like jr’s ampenergy or national guard 88.

  87. happyfeet says:

The day I looked at the Dodge Charger – I really liked it – and then I got behind a new one coming home and thought yup, that’s my car. Then the guy behind me started honking and I finally figured out that it had its hazards on and nobody was inside and I had to go around.

  88. happyfeet says:

The UAW must be pissed at them. A friend of mine just took her brand new whatever the cheaper one is back. The Caliber. Which I would look at against the tc except for that I think the UAW must be pissed at them.

  89. JD says:

that was hysterical. I am still a huge fan of the Saab 9.3 Aero. Fast. Fun. Nice. and a really reasonable price.

  90. happyfeet says:

Oh. How this worked really was I googled “shortest cars” and finally found an AOL page that list cars in order of length, starting with Smart. And then I think was the Mini, which I think I liked for like a week maybe two years ago but now they’re all over and I don’t get them at all anymore. Also their paint jobs don’t hold up well or the way they ride they get dirty too fast or something. Oh. it is. Actually how I got to the volvo is pretty self-explanatory if you look at the list. Thanks AOL for helping me with yet another life choice!

  91. happyfeet says:

Here was supposed to be up there.

  92. happyfeet says:

What a disaster really for Volvo’s branding. Then again, it’s not like anyone would be dumb enough to put a McCain sticker on a shiny new Volvo and leave it parked anywhere, so maybe it’s a lemons and lemonade thing.

  93. datadave says:

you guys are hilarious. I did buy my first Volvo for 500 bucks. Only about 7 yrs ago. That’d mean I had 100 left over. I bought the inspection sticker and the old s/w cause it ran. It lasted 3 years. The clutch gave out and it had too much rust at the point…. investment: 500=3 years plus 2000 for insurance and maintainence..pretty cheap for 3 years. There are still old Volvos around for under a 1000 and they last but they need constant maintenance due to their heaviness..brakes do wear out faster. But their engine are so reliable. Toyota trucks were my previous favorite: less maintenance but when something went bad.. major costs or their infamous rust problems. The good used ones are also very pricey. I’d get another but I only pay cash and I have a Volvo mechanic around the corner who works at night.

HF think about a truck for your short distance commutes. Get maybe an older Ford Ranger (really a masda) for maybe 3 K and it’ll last you a few years to a decade and it’d break the image of being nerdish or something? Put an old deer hide in the back with a ‘cap’ over it. Damn truck would be useful and you could even sleep in it if you get tired of paying rent. You might bet over 20 mph with it but since you only drive not-that-far except for a trip to the Sierras or something… gas is expensive but still a minor fraction of ownership costs of any car. A lot of people still pay more for insurance than gas.

That new Volvo c30 is reminiscent of the The Saint’s Volvo: a P1800

This is a Classic car. And World Record holder for longevity in miles of driving. 2 million.

Funny, though my mechanic hates their engines, says they’re a tractor engine…but thinking of the Volvo long haul trucks out there that get 4 to 6 million miles regularly that’s not so bad being a ‘tractor engine’.

Happy, You should get the c30!
