Barack “Swift-Boating” Hillary? [Dan Collins]

She will not allow America’s future to be Swift-boated:

Sen. Barack Obama’s presidential campaign aides stepped up their effort to force Democrat Hillary Clinton to release her tax returns yesterday, to shed light on the sources of income that enabled her to loan $5 million of her own money to her presidential bid. While Obama made public his tax return last year, Clinton’s top advisers have maintained that they will only release the tax returns she filed jointly with husband Bill Clinton if she can secure her party’s nomination.

“Why should Democratic voters have to wait until after the primary campaign is over to find out important information about Senator Clinton’s finances that Senator Obama has already disclosed?” asked Obama spokesman Bill Burton. “For someone who claims to be fully vetted, hiding a campaign loan from voters until after Super Tuesday and refusing to release your tax returns until after the primary doesn’t seem like the best way to prove that there are no surprises for the Republicans to find once they start digging.”

Yesterday, Obama stopped short of calling on Clinton to release her tax return when asked the question by reporters traveling with him. “I’ll just say that I’ve released my tax returns. That’s been a policy I’ve maintained consistently. I think the American people deserve to know where you get your income from. But I’ll leave it up to you guys to chase it down.”

Because of the sunshininess.

Honestly, stuff like this just leaves me speechless. Why wouldn’t she release it, unless she had something she didn’t want the public to know? The answer is just too painfully obvious.

According to Dick Morris, the Clintons are real tight with the King? Emir? Sultan? of Dubai. He funnels money into a corporation of the Clintions as a ‘consulting’ fee. Filthy capitalists!

  3. Carin says:

I know that’s why they won’t release the Clinton Library funding stuff, right?

How much information, cumulatively, are the Clintons holding back?

Hillary: “Whew… I was worried there for a second.”

In my recollection really, there was none of the fundraising whatnot that ever really moved the dial on the Clintons back in the day. Republicans tried and tried. Next time around the special prosecutor thing is different now anyway.

    the special prosecutor thing

Maybe we should start calling them Blue-Ribbon Panels.

    It works in Chicago.

    *cough*

I’m sorry, Dan, but Mr. Obama remains the Sole Unsullied Son-Of-The-Illinois-Combine.

  8. One of the lame complaints the left has about President Bush is that he’s “the most secretive president ever” as if that’s a horrible thing. It’s always struck me as either deliberately lying or historically clueless, the Clinton presidency was unbelievably secretive, they wouldn’t release health records or most of the things previous presidents have about themselves. Why should they, he kept being elected, what’s the point? What the press demanded from everyone else, they just shrugged at with Clinton.

Somebody needs to tell Clinton how well “withholding records” worked out for John Kerry.

  11. Mark V Wilson says:

Waiting until after the primaries means that the 2007 tax returns will be available to be released. I have doubts that earlier year returns will be released. Of course, the issue won’t matter if Obama wins.

heh. don’t you realize “withholding” is just a legal term meaning the records in question are in line for being reviewed before being released.
