   just riffing on this some more…. know what we did with RTO’s extra deployment income? paid off our debts and bought a big honkin’ HD television, that’s what. cause it’s the American way.

   Maybe she doesn’t want a new one. I know someone with a similar story. He came from the slum but he’s really successful now and can afford anything he likes. But his granny refuses to abandon their home in the tenement. She still lives there until now.

   Just what is appalling?

   If you have spent any time in Kenya or other parts of Africa, you will know that Granny Obama lives in a nicer house than most. If she is watching the TV, it means that she has electricity, always a plus in Africa. She is healthy enough to have far outlived the national life expectancy. Her dress looks good on her, and she seems happy.

   Here’s a quote from a letter from a recent Peace Corps volunteer in Kenya.

   “The electric grid only reaches 13 percent of the Kenyan population; to go on the electric grid, families have to pay around 50,000 to 60,000 Kenyan schillings – the equivalent of $700.00. Since 52 percent of all Kenyans live on less than $16.00 a month, most Kenyans cannot come up with that payment. Most homes do not have running water; those that do know to boil the water before drinking it.”

   That’s consistent with my experience there 25 years ago, and my daughter’s more recently. Life in Africa is almost unimaginably different from the way we live here.

   Would Jeff Goldstein please come back, or turn this place over to some grown-ups.

    Yeah, as a former Peace Corps volunteer in Kenya, I can tell you the old girl is doing pretty good. Definitely upper middle class. And she don’t need no stinking car. With the way they drive, it’d just get her killed.

    The really funny thing about the massive U.S. black support for Obama is that his heritage is East African, where virtually no slaves orginated. As a consequence, African-Amercian support for Obama is like an Irish-American supporting a Polish-American, because “he’s like us.” It’s about skin color.

    Hey, David? Your sense of humor just called!

    He wanted to say that he’s sorry for getting liquored up on Mohitos and Tequilla shooters. Somehow he ended up in Taos where he was painted as a living statue by the art community. He hates it there as they despise both comedy and mixed drinks.

    Obama is only half-black on the outside but he’s becoming green. How’s that for some irony? She needs money but Obama be big pimpin’.
