Dems 2008: Clinton backs seating MI, FL delegates, heads explode [Karl]

There is a great disturbance in the Leftosphere after Ezra Klein flagged a statement from the Clinton campaign that Sen. Hillary Clinton will ask her Democratic convention delegates to support seating the delegations from Florida and Michigan.

Josh Marshall seems thisclose to a declaration that this aggression will not stand:

The Clinton camp is just pushing to seat these delegates now because the contingencies of the moment mean that the decision would favor Hillary. She was the only one whose name was on the ballot in Michigan, thus insuring her win. She has a wide lead in every Florida poll taken this month.

In reality, this has been true since Sen. Barack Obama, John Edwards and others withdrew their names from the ballot in Michigan, which Big Tent Democrat of TalkLeft maintains was an initiative by Obama, not the Democratic Party.

In the uproar, both sides have missed what I have noted here repeatedly on this topic — i.e., that people within the DNC have been quietly saying for some time that the Florida and Michigan delegations will be seated.  Anyone who wants to be the nominee is not going to want to start his or her campaign antagonizing the party poobahs whose help they will need in two large swing states.

Instead, it appears that Clinton and Obama supporters want to fight another round of “who disenfranchised who.”  These Democratic campaign truces seem to be getting shorter and shorter.

To say that the Florida and Michigan delegations will be seated is somewhat misleading, because it overlooks a key detail.

They will be allowed to stand up and endorse the main Democratic candidate, but only after all the other states have decided the issue. Their support has absolutely no electoral relevance, but is only of symbolic value.

  2. Dan Collins says:

Except for the symbolic value that makes them relevant before they stand, of course.

  6. Mark Kraft says:

In other words, what Hillary Clinton is trying to do is to is a trap, because she skirted the clear intent of party rules by keeping her name on the ballots for these states.

She will do her best to deflect the impact of a likely South Carolina loss by trying to spin Obama and Edwards’ lack of support for letting Florida and Michigan electoral votes counting as voter disenfranchisement, rather than party rules… and, of course, if Obama and Edwards actually tried to fight for those states counting, assuming the rest of the Democratic Party agreed to it, they would be basically spotting Hillary a bunch of electoral votes she didn’t really earn/deserve, as those states weren’t contested.

That’s not democracy. Let them vote.

Fascinating how little there is to be said about the GOP candidates. Ya’ll are quite obsessive about the DEMs.

Mayhaps 2008 should be a referendum making the GOP a write-in only vote. There could be a simple runoff between Hill and Hussein
in November to determine the next WH occupant. Or do you want to extol the virtues of the remaining field of Repub candidates?

Hillary is gonna win either way, the whole thing about not respecting the delegates for all the states is simply disturbing, i have not been quite able to make sense of that, not respecting the delegates because of date/time issues?, how can that be called democracy?

  16. Karl says:

Mark Kraft is upset at HRC for skirting the intent of the party rules, which is another way of saying she did not break the party rules. As noted above, the situation in Michigan was actually Obama’s doing, in an attempt to keep the focus on IA, where he knew he was strong. In the short-term it was successful. But if the DNC had actually required withdrawal, Obama, Edwards, etc. would all be in violation in Florida, where they remain on the ballot. The DNC can choose not to seat them until the race is decided by other delegates, but: (a) there is no such constraint on the media (which is one reason HRC is doing this now); and (b) it is at least possible that the MI and FL delegates could be decisive, which would put all involved in quite the pickle.

Gilgamesh thinks we are obsessing about the Dems, though there are at least four posts just today related to the GOP candidates. I’m going to have to go with McGehee. I’m not much into extolling any politician’s virtues, but I will note that the GOP field is not spending its time trying to come up with new ways of accusing each other of being racist and sexist, though that’s probably because the Dems will eventually get ’round to doing to the GOP what they are doing to each other now.

  17. happyfeet says:

Maybe not racist or sexist but can we haz ageism? Peas?

It’s the famous and patented “Democratic Party Circular Firing Squad”. Between becoming old enough to understand that this was regular and normal behavior for Democrats and the realization that I’d voted for a dirtbag and helped elect him in ’92, I decided to leave that party.

  20. RTO Trainer says:

Carl, It’s not democracy. In fact, it’s not intended to be.

Anyone who’s read the Article 2 of the Constitution and the changes to it of the 12th Amendment, for meaning, would realize one particular truth: no one has any guaranteed right to vote for President.

And that’s in the General election. This whole primary/caucus thing is 100% an extra-Constitutional invention of the Parties through the States, who are empowered to decide how the Electors of the Electoral College shall eb chosen.

Any state legislature could pass a law tomorrow that would chose those Electors based on the length of the middle toe on the right foot, or declared taxable income, or an appointment by the Governor, or to hire a company to run a poll.

It’s not democratic, except that that happens to be the way we have chosen to do it, but when it’s not laid out by a standard, in particualr not by the Constitution, then teh States and the Parties can do what they want, and it may appear bad or wrong, but it’s perfectly legal and aboveboard.
