You’ve been called out, Cuomo. It’s who you are. It’s what you do. (h/t Guido)

“NRA Responds to President Obama’s Gun Control Proposals””
In a statement: Throughout its history, the National Rifle Association has led efforts to promote safety and responsible gun ownership. Keeping our children and society safe remains our top priority. The NRA will continue to focus on keeping our children safe and securing our schools, fixing our broken mental health system, and prosecuting violent criminals to the fullest extent of the law. We look forward to working with Congress on
“Matt Yglesias: Sorry haters, Obama’s kids are worth more than yours” [updated]
I tweeted him, providing him the opportunity to clarify whether he meant more at risk, or more important — though he seems to be doubling down with the “important” bit. So far I’ve not received a response. There is some good news that comes out of this, though: Yglesias, we now know, is not likely to procreate. Because no one with children would ever say anything so elitist and
Imperial Assault on Natural Rights Day open thread [UPDATED]
The time is coming. The President, flanked by emotional props, will issue his monarchical decrees. What are you gonna do about it? **** update: vulgar, crass, maudlin, despicable. 23 executive actions and a push to renew assault weapons ban and a ban on magazines holding over ten rounds. For the children. Most of whom are slaughtered in gun free zones. By criminals. If the GOP can’t stand up to
“NBC News Report: ‘Obama To Go Big’ On Gun Control…”
via Weasel Zippers, this, from NBC: Bottom line: Obama is going about as big as he can go, realizing there’s little political downside (at least in the short term). One gun-control advocate tells First Read that the recommendations would be “the most significant reform of our guns laws since MLK and RFK were assassinated” in 1968. Yet as NBC’s Savannah Guthrie pointed out on “TODAY” this morning, there’s a reason
Is today the day?
We began with the shot heard ’round the world. How ironic will it be if the next iteration of declaring our independence comes as a result of a free people refusing to abide an overreaching centralized government coming yet again for their weapons? Everything old is new again.
Yet another case for electing conservative governors
Andrew Cuomo, who has his eye on a 2016 White House run — and who irreparably damaged himself when he took to shouting about bullets and deer in what will I hope prove to be his Howard Dean “yeeeeeaaaaarrrrrrghhh!” moment — hurried through legislation meant to capitalize on the death of 26 children and adults in Newtown, in the process using manufactured hysteria to whittle away the already attenuated 2nd
“New York’s New Gun Controls Make the PATRIOT Act Look Like a Model of Legislative Deliberation”
Jacob Sullum, Reason: Last night, by a vote of 43 to 18, the New York State Senate, which is run by a coalition of Republicans and breakaway Democrats, approved the new gun restrictions demanded last week by Gov. Andrew Cuomo, including a seven-round limit on magazines (down from 10) and a broader, California-style ban on “assault weapons.” Today the New York State Assembly, controlled by Democrats, followed suit by a vote of 104
New Yorkers who own 3 or more guns are now felons
Just like those who commit violent crimes with unregistered weapons — only without the “committed violent crimes” part. The opposite in fact: they keep their guns to protect themselves and their families against violent criminals who don’t much seem to care about gun control measures. Fairness! But let’s not be too hard on the political class: to run a thriving police state, you need a steady supply of new criminals.
“Released EPA Administrator’s Non-Public Emails Called ‘Deeply Troubling’”
You don’t say. Complying with a court order minutes before Monday’s 5 p.m. deadline, the Environmental Protection Agency yesterday released 2,100 emails received or sent by EPA Administrator Lisa Jackson on one of her non-public accounts. But which one? The name on the email account was redacted. The information provided by the EPA under court order doesn’t satisfy the man who discovered that Jackson has been using the alias “Richard
