AMERICA: LOVE IT OR LEAVE IT!

Just kidding. After all, that’s the kind of absolutism and demand for enforced patriotism that the intellectual left, particularly those who espouse heterodoxical viewpoints in the halls of academia as a way to “challenge” the “prevailing epistemological paradigm” while coaxing “critical thinking” from those mind-numbed automotons still ensnared by Enlightenment tropes, have long sneered at, pointing to its knee-jerk nativism and slack-jawed, lunch bucket rote pro-Americanism.

And such an unsophisticated approach to dealing with institutions or nation-states or works of art, etc — that is, human constructs that are inherently flawed but that, having been reforged in the cauldron of theoretical challenge, are strengthened by the dissent leveled against them, emerging from such rigorous scrutiny stronger and decidedly more robust for having incorporated the critiques of honest thinkers and investigators — is a sure sign that one lacks the intellectual nimbleness to defend the object of their fetish on anything more than a purely emotional, culturally manufactured level.

As slack-jawed, lunch bucket ‘Mercan patriots — bitterclingers with a death grip on their guns and their risible metaphysics — are wont to do.

— Which is why I find this, from the Harvard Crimson, so freakin’ hysterical:  “Warning: Do Not Enroll: If you might want to insult Harvard down the line, go elsewhere”.

Oh, the irony. It’s so red hot that I wouldn’t be surprised if a contingent of outraged environmental groups showed up to protest the dangerous climate change such a blazing display is almost bring about, leaving the earth scorched, thirsty, and forlorn.

  2. happyfeet says:

  3. leigh says:

Looks like not much has changed since Bill Buckley wrote “God and Man at Yale”.

  4. sdferr says:

    maligning Harvard

O malignant asteroid raining heavens forfend. Be careful to say nothing true about the old dear either, for in these days, when truth is a woman, she may turn her heels on you in a New York minute.

  5. McGehee says:

I’ve said horrible, terrible, nasty and ungodly things about Harvard — but I’ve never successfully maligned it.

    It’s simply beyond my capabilities.

  6. leigh says:

I guess universities are people, but corporations are not.

    Who knew?

  7. sdferr says:

Who loves ya, Harvard? Harvey, that’s who.

  8. So, is Harvard now teaching that nothing will ensure your future success like a total absence of criticism?

  9. mojo says:

Still dealing with that “not the REAL Cambridge” thing, I see.

  10. JohnInFirestone says:

Stating the fact that there are more Marxists than conservatives is maligning?

Here’s an idea: If you don’t like being associated with Communist professors, stop hiring Communist Professors! Even a NASCAR lovin’, gun-totin’, cousin-humpin’ retard like me can figure that out.

  11. leigh says:

Professor Mansfield was rather a thorn under the saddle of the administration, wasn’t he?

Too bad there aren’t more like him.

  12. William says:

My favorite part of that by far is the fact it links to a Texas succession article. Because the most terrifying terrorism is requested to leave through legal channels.

    Ah, American children.

  13. McGehee says:

Why not? The kids entering college these days grew up in government schools sheltered from the emotional consequences of failure. Get them through 4 years of college and 3 years of law school and when they suddenly discover, at the age of 25, that they’re not omniscient, maybe instead of merely destroying themselves they’ll take a few million people with them.

Assuming it hasn’t already happened by then (thanks, little god-king!).

  14. Squid says:

Will they feel as strongly about their spouses as they do their alma mater? When the wife is being particularly annoying, will they bite their tongues, realizing that their marriage vows bind them as tightly as their degrees? When the husband is particularly crass or useless, will they remain silent, knowing that once they chose that man, they revoked their right to criticize?

We need to get these people’s names and track them down ten years from now. Rub their precious little faces in it.

  15. JohnInFirestone says:

Man, I miss the days of dissent being patriotic…

According to the VAWA, they can just have him arrested. Problem solved!

  17. sdferr says:

Geez guins, sleeping on the job?

  18. guinspen says:

    I blamzzz…
