GOP seriousness

It’s been mentioned before, but something to watch as a gauge of how seriously the GOP establishment took the message sent them by the Tea Party earlier this month is to whom they give the Chairmanship of the House Energy & Commerce Committee.

One candidate getting serious consideration is Fred Upton, whose voting record shows (among other things) an affinity for both the EPA and federally mandated light bulbs, support of “green energy” initiatives directed by government agencies, opposition to a 2009 Republican amendment to cut Environmental Protection Agency funding to its 2008 levels, and support for a Democrat bill hamstringing border security.

In short, Upton is precisely the wrong kind of Republican to be chairing the House committee responsible for writing legislation about interstate and foreign commerce, energy generation and conservation, travel and tourism, and consumer protection.

Notes NetRightDaily:

On the week of November 29th, the Steering Committee will meet to discuss who will be assigned to committees/subcommittees. Please contact the committee members to tell them that you oppose Fred Upton for Chairman of the House Energy & Commerce Committee:

John Boehner (OH-08) (Chairman of Steering Committee)
Eric Cantor (VA-07)
Greg Walden (OR-02)
Kevin McCarthy (CA-22)
Lynn Westmoreland (GA-03)
Tom Price (GA-06)
Gregg Harper (MS-03)
Jeb Hensarling (TX-05)
John Carter (TX-31)
Pete Sessions (TX-32)
Cathy Rodgers (WA-05)
Hal Rogers (KY-05)
Pat Meehan (PA-07) (incoming freshman)
Joe Heck (NV-03) (incoming freshman)
Todd Rokita (IN-04) (incoming freshman)
Austin Scott (GA-08) (incoming freshman)

The Tea Party movement didn’t end with the November elections. In fact, the hard work begins now.

Time to get busy.

And the phone numbers of the steering committee.

Use this map to find phone and fax numbers of all congresscritters.

  3. bh says:

You can see all votes against the party here. Pretty nifty.

Sure there’s more material there to use.

  4. geoffb says:

He used to be my Congressman when I lived 20 miles west. His problem is Kalamazoo which is by far the largest city in his district and is dominated by WMU with its 25,000 students and 1000 faculty making Kalamazoo a beacon of bright blue in a sea of red.

Not as RINOish as one I had in my own district 2004-2006 but not a good solid conservative choice. A local article on this.

  5. abeldred says:

Congressman Joe Barton (TX-6) is lobbying for this position. Strong conservative and a much better choice. When you contact your Congressional Rep to oppose Upton, tell them to support Barton.

  6. sdferr says:

I’m growing kinda fond of that word “marginalize”.

  7. cranky-d says:

I see “marginalize” and I think “margarine” for some reason. And I don’t even like margarine that much.

Never mind, carry on with the serious talking.

  8. Bob Reed says:

I’m glad to see that I won’t be the only whack-job-nutter writing to members of Congress anymore.

  10. McGehee says:

I sent a link to the FreedomWorks.org page dicentra linked, to my congressman, Lynn Westmoreland. He’s the first congressman I’ve ever actually been mostly happy with, so I expect him to do right.

OT: political prosecution seriousness — Tom DeLay convicted of “money laundering and conspiracy to commit money laundering. He faces up to life in prison on the money laundering charge.”

  12. Jeff G. says:

It’s a sad day when political prosecutions such as those of Delay and Scooter Libby are more important to Dems than punishing terrorists.

And listening to all the people who are just fine with the TSA patting their balls, I can say this for certain: I no longer recognize this country, or the majority of its people.

If me and my family didn’t have to live here, too, I’d tell the country itself in its current form to fuck right off, and I’d go entirely off the grid.

  13. happyfeet says:

that’s because it’s a failshit parody of the America we once knew

  14. bh says:

Between hosting Thanksgiving and deer hunting I have enough ammo, booze and beer at my place right now to go off the grid for months and months. Anyone with canned goods and a generator could come over and get in on the ground floor. If you have enough of that Dinty Moore beef stew I might even toss you my vote for tribal leader.

  15. sdferr says:

Omar has to go back to Baltimore from the islands because Chris and Snoop have tortured and killed Butchie the blind guy: it’s Omar’s task to deal in a grim and certain justice. It’s a dirty job but someone has to do it.

    bh,
Bag ye a few rabbits and squirrels with those deer and whip up a good ol’ brunswick stew! Some real Cack-ah-lackee sould food for y’all Yankees!

But you need ye some beans and corn too…Much better than the Dinty moore variety.

Or, short of that, make some good ol’ Swabian jaeger eintopf (hunter’s stew). Dude! it’s awesome.

  18. Bob Reed says:

    sdferr,
    What does #16 mean?

  19. sdferr says:

Omar is an heroic outlaw of the first order Bob. He lives on The Wire.

  20. happyfeet says:

I should give The Wire another chance … maybe after I get a new place I will

  21. bh says:

You sound like a natural, Bob. If you have a generator, you have my vote.

Omar is currently playing an Atlantic City bootlegger/gangster on Boardwalk Empire. Worth a watch if you haven’t seen it yet. Paz de la Huerta keeps getting the twins out as well, in case you’re interested in such things.

jes so I don’t have to “I would have even if I didn’t” again.

    Ah, a TV reference; I get it…

I usually get those things on re-run, or DVD on loan from my younger brother.

For me and the wife, TV is mostly News, Football/Baseball, some HGTV and TLC with a side of discovery thrown in. But mostly, we read a lot.

And I sneak in a little cartoon network from time-to-time.

  25. Bob Reed says:

I’d love to be joinin’ y’all in the hunt bh,

But I have familial obligations to meet. We’re leaving for the eastern shore of the people’s republic of Maryland at 0500 to spend Thanksgiving with my parents, and a group of folks up from Cack-ah-lackee.

But I can cook, especially what another of my brothers euphamistically refers to as “trail slop”.

  26. Rupert says:

I sent something to my Congressman, but I don’t expect anything from him (Visclosky from Indiana). I also sent a letter to Sen. Lugar. I wish he would retire. He still thinks he can be the “Moderate” Republican candidate for President. — It worked for McCain!

  27. ccs says:

    bh,
I come with my own cast iron Dutch oven and have won several Cookoffs at BSA summer camp. I volunteer to be camp cook. I can whip you up a stew that would make Mr Moore cry, and I don’t even want to be leader.

  28. ccs says:

Oh, I also have all kinds of mad Boy Scout off the grid kinda skills.

  29. bh says:

Too late, ccs, you’re definitely our leader.
