Michael Yon: Iraq War Won [Dan Collins]

Insty:

“THE WAR IS OVER AND WE WON:” Michael Yon just phoned from Baghdad, and reports that things are much better than he had expected, and he had expected things to be good. “There’s nothing going on. I’m with the 10th Mountain Division, and about half of the guys I’m with haven’t fired their weapons on this tour and they’ve been here eight months. And the place we’re at, South Baghdad, used to be one of the worst places in Iraq. And now there’s nothing going on. I’ve been walking my feet off and haven’t seen anything. I’ve been asking Iraqis, ‘do you think the violence will kick up again,’ but even the Iraqi journalists are sounding optimistic now and they’re usually dour.” There’s a little bit of violence here and there, but nothing that’s a threat to the general situation. Plus, not only the Iraqi Army, but even the National Police are well thought of by the populace. Training from U.S. toops has paid off, he says, in building a rapport.

He says the big problem everybody is talking about now is corruption. But hey, we have that here, too. He’ll be heading to Afghanistan next week. “Afghanistan is a bad situation, but on Iraq I can’t believe things have turned out so well.”

He thinks that Obama will be able to pull troops out, and send some to Afghanistan, without creating problems in Iraq. Michael will be reporting from Afghanistan soon, and sending back video, so stay tuned. Things aren’t going swimmingly there.

UPDATE: Rand Simberg: “No thanks to the Democrats, including Barack Obama and Joe Biden, who tried to keep it from happening. I see that they still can’t bring themselves to utter the word ‘win’ with respect to the war. They continue to talk about ‘ending’ it. Well, it looks like George Bush did that for them, and he won it as well.”

According to Obama, this result was unforeseeable, which exempts him from blame for pooh-poohing The Surge.  Course, that doesn’t mean Bush is off the hook for having believed his intelligence agencies in the first place.  Maybe, could it be? after all the sturm und drang, his legacy will be greater than Bill Clinton’s?

    war is over

    all we are swaying
    is give fleece a chance
    all we were saying…

  2. pretty boy lee says:

I think Obama will screw the pooch anyway.

Instead of leaving a US presence in Iraq(in the form of a few bases that continue to work with the Iraqis, for a hundred years TTM) and benefit from intelligence and be a further deterrent to Iraq’s hostile neighbors, he will probably scratch his nose(with a decidedly inappropriate finger) and undo any feelings of good will from the Iraqi people with an ungracious exit.

Obama will never admit Bush did a good thing in Iraq, and will act in a way to undermine any credit that could possibly be given him.

  3. snuffles says:

Obama will get credit for pulling our troops out of Iraq, something a majority of Americans and Iraqis are in favor of.

    Hope and Change.

  4. Dash Rendar says:

Snuffles, well how do explain the poll wherein 70% of Iraqis want US troops to remain?

  5. Sdferr says:

President Bush, as it happens, is getting credit for “pulling our troops out” now. So if any credit falls to the future President Obama, he can know that he won’t be alone.

  6. Dash Rendar says:

something a majority of majority of Americans and Iraqis Liberal cowards and terrorists are in favor of. Fixed it for ya.

  7. Dash Rendar says:

But hey, we already know O! is down with terrorists.

  8. snuffles says:

The troops are pulling out whether you want them to stay or not, Dash.

Feel free to declare victory if it helps.

  9. JD says:

Obama will never admit Bush did a good thing in Iraq, and will act in a way to undermine any credit that could possibly be given him.

I would not stop there. Baracky will claim credit for President Bush’s victory, and the media will allow him to do so.

  10. JD says:

STFU sniffles/alphie. Go build your balloon fence.

  11. pretty boy lee says:

That whole victory thing really stings, don’t it monkyboy?

Sorry you didn’t get the defeat you wanted.(not really)

Maybe Obama is the man for the job now.

  14. snuffles says:

Obama’s just going for a tie in Iraq, urth.

Just like Eisenhower got in Korea.

    A gentleman’s C.

  19. JD says:

    STFU sniffles.

Why the fuck would we settle for a tie when we are winning ?!?!?

  20. urthshu says:

O really? This isn’t the Hope and Change I knew.

  21. urthshu says:

But, of course, O wouldn’t really be in favor of America actually winning anything.

  22. JD says:

I guess striving for a tie is better than what sniffles has been doing, cheering for a loss.

  23. dre says:

“Ho hum. Another day in paradise.”

Yes much better under Saddam when he killed with alot of folks and CNN didn’t tell you.

  24. urthshu says:

    Yay!*

  25. urthshu says:

I’m soooo glad that Baracky is gonna get “our partners” in Europe and the ME [Russia, Iran] to help in straightening out that Booooosh mess. Whew! What were we thinking? “Policeman of the world”? Pshaw!

  28. Dash Rendar says:

    Egyptian scholar Sheikh Yousef Al-Qaradhawi:

“In a fatwa published on the eve of the U.S. elections, Sheikh Yousef Al-Qaradhawi expressed his preference for Sen. John McCain as president: “Personally, I would prefer for the Republican candidate, [John] McCain, to be elected. This is because I prefer the obvious enemy who does not hypocritically [conceal] his hostility toward you… to the enemy who wears a mask [of friendliness].”

Al-Qaradhawi added: “Whoever thinks that the Democrats are less hostile to [the Arabs] than the Republicans should know that the number of Iraqis killed during the siege [of Iraq] by the Democrat Bill Clinton is twice as high as the number of [Iraqis] killed by the Republican [George] Bush.

“The Democrats kill you slowly without you noticing it – and therein lies the danger. They are like a snake whose touch is not felt until its poison enters your body.””

    Ouch snuffles. That hurts.

  29. snuffles says:

Why the fuck would we settle for a tie when we are winning ?!?!?

    Because America is broke, JD.

    In case you hadn’t noticed.

A few more victories like Iraq and we’re finished.

  30. Sdferr says:

I’d personally like to see Mike Yon and sniffles in the same room and watch to see sniffles tell Yon to his face “he sure is a crack reporter”.

  31. Dash Rendar says:

    “Because America is broke”

Hey, lets eliminate the Department of Education. An federal funding to ACORN. And Fannie Mae/Freddie Mac. No, I think we’ll find out how truly broke we are once Pelosi/Reid start ramming trillion dollar spending packages down our throats.

  32. dre says:

“A few more victories like Iraq and we’re finished.”

A few more Fannie and Freddie Demorat hit jobs and we’re finished.

  33. Hvy Mtl Hntr says:

Pres-elect obama is about to be the new captain of the U.S. ship of state. I pray that he does not squander the Victory for which my son fought for, and paid for with his life. Mr. obama needs to remember that 48% of the crew still believes in fighting to win.

  34. JD says:

Hvy Mtl Hntr – My condolences for the loss of your son.

Just picking a nit, but far more than 48% of your son’s crew believes in fighting to win.

  35. JD says:

STFU, sniffles. American is broke? Then why is Baracky proposing over a trillion dollars in new spending? You are an unmitigated fuckhead of the highest order.

  36. snuffles says:

The spoils of victory go to the Democrats this time, JD.

The Red States can survive on their hubris, though.

Besides, Americans need the money more than the Iraqis now.

  37. J. "Trashman" Peden says:

I salute you both and will never forget.

  38. dre says:

“Besides, Americans need the money more than the Iraqis now.”

    You don’t like BROWN PEOPLE?

  39. JD says:

    STFU, sniffles.

If spoils of victory means that you destroy the Iraqi society, and lose or tie a war that was already won, that is all on you. Every last life and drop of blood.

  40. Dan Collins says:

Hvy Mtl Hntr, I am sorry for your loss. I am grateful that there are Americans like you and your son.

  41. J. "Trashman" Peden says:

The spoils of victory go to the Democrats this time, JD.

The Red States can survive on their hubris, though.

It really sucks to be you, snuffy.

  42. JD says:

Hvy Mtl Hntr – Hopefully, Baracky will not surrender, lose, or tie. I cannot imagine the pain of your loss, and yet at the same time, it has to be with a bit of pride in that the child that you raised lived such an honorable life.

Don’t let the little shits like sniffles/alphie get you down.

  43. Hvy Mtl Hntr says:

J.D.- I was referring to the 48% that voted McCain/Palin and for defending the Constitution. My son’s outfit DID win the Anbar Awakening; don’t EVER THINK I would question the resolve of our servicemen!

It is amazing – I mean, sad – that the left doesn’t want the US to have a military victory. And after all of that ‘we screwed up by bugging out of Afghanistan to soon after the Soviet pullout’ that they yelled about a few years back. One would almost think that their patriotism is based solely on which party holds the White House.

Vietnam did just fine once we pulled out, Mikey.

Even Bush praised its progress recently.

Iraq is like Vietnam, better off without us.

But if it helps, by all means declare Iraq a victory.

It will make it that much easier for President Obama to withdraw our troops.

  53. Sdferr says:

  84. Mr. Pink says:

Sycophants like Chris Tingle and Keefy O can try to spin it however they want. But the guy who has gotten so much mileage out of the difference between mission accomplished, meaning an end to formal hostilities between combatants, and the end of the AQI and insurgent militia violence, will live to regret any day that he tries to declare that without O!, victory would never have been possible. The hypocrisy of suggesting that the greeeeat humanist, the man of peace that wanted to cut and run, regardless of the consequences to the Iraqis, is responsible for winning the war is mind boggling indeed…

In years to come, folks will sit back and watch the MSM hacks and the Democrat leaders go on about how we lost the war, and wonder how we ever found the will to win it at all…

Though I won’t rule out O! effin’ this all up somehow…

I mean, what better way to completely humiliate our nation, like his mentors did in Vietnam!, than to show weakness and allow the return of the insurgents and the descent of Iraq into a bloody civil war…

  160. Ric Locke says:

Nono, guys. monky/alphie/snuffles is an absolute American jingoist. Only what Americans do counts in any way.

So Saddam can torture twenty or thirty thousand people at Abu Ghraib, and it doesn’t count in any way; no people were involved. (MD Anderson hospital provided prosthetics to some men who’d had their hands cut off by Saddam’s goons at Abu Ghraib. There were more of them than there were victims of American torture. That doesn’t matter, either.) Saddam could and did kill tens of thousands of Kurds with poison gas, and destroy hundreds of square miles of unique wildlife habitat in order to starve Marsh Arabs, and this is of absolutely nil import; it might as well not have happened.

Pol Pot coould murder twenty or thirty million people, and that doesn’t count in any way. Again, no people — that is, Americans — were involved (except for the few godbotherers there to annoy the Forces of Good a.k.a. Pol’s murderous children).

The Viet Minh, and later the Viet Cong, made a regular practice of wiping out entire villages, down to the babies, for “reactionary tendencies”. This is a matter of absolutely no legal, moral, or ethical import, because no people — that is, no Americans — were involved. In fact, wherever you go in the world, according to alphie, nothing ever happens of any legal, moral, or ethical import, unless it is done by Americans and the import is negative.

This is because only Americans count as people capable of moral choice. The rest of the hominids on the planet are, for all practical purposes, speaking animals. One does not accuse the tiger of “evil” for devouring baby wildebeest. The tiger isn’t “people”. Same for all hominids except Americans, who are uniquely able to commit evil because they are in fact people.

It is bigoted jingoism breathtaking in its universality and completeness. But that’s our alphie, and his friends.

    Regards,
    Ric

That’s all it really deserves.

In May 1973, Congress voted to cut-off all funds for military action in Indochina, including air support. Having deprived Saigon of U.S. firepower, Congress then cut aid to South Vietnam in 1974, resulting in shortages of fuel, spare parts and ammunition. A month after this Congressional action, the Hanoi Politburo decided to launch a new invasion in 1975. The Soviets increased their military aid to Hanoi, building a heavily armed force that the abandoned Saigon government could not stop. When President Gerald Ford asked Congress for an emergency grant of funds to rush ammunition to South Vietnam on April 10, 1975, he was turned down.

  200. Patrick Chester says:

The basic fact remains: Congress did indeed cut aid to South Vietnam, from forbidding US forces to intervene and reducing supplies to the ARVN. The Soviet Union did not cut aid to North Vietnam. That resulted in South Vietnam getting
overwhelmed by the North and your “not so bad” slaughter resulted.

How cute. The Alinsky “keep attacking the person” strategy from you.

Oh and btw: my initial posting? From memory. The cursory searches I’ve been making show I was basically correct in my claim. You? Playing Chomsky in a addition to Alinsky: pick a small grain of truth and wrap a huge honking lie around it. Congress’s “funding” was inadequate in comparison to the support given the North. That plus the US military being forbidden to support an ally led to the fall of the South.

It’s obvious you’re starting to feed off of my attention and I’m getting too tired of dealing with your bullshit. So toddle off, asshat.

(How amusing: I post something describing the situation in Vietnam at that time period is… changing the subject in alphie’s little world.)

  201. Patrick Chester says:

Oh dear, my little crack about Alinsky and Chomsky was probably the “subject change” alphie meant. Oh well.

I’d call it definition of alphie’s lack of character.

  202. Patrick Chester says:

Anyway. If I can make a formatting error as bad as I did and miss something in the scrollups that’s a sign I need sleep. L8r.

(Heh. Even up for 24 hrs I can make alphie try to grasp at any minor error and screech “liar! confess!” in response. Oh wait, he does that most of the time. Whatever.)

  203. Bob Reed says:

    Touche RTO,
    You have a point sir!

Like I said, Facts are stubborn things

We must find a way to reclaim the public education system, and restrict it’s mission to…education!

    What a concept…

No more social justice, no dwelling on the Horror! of the middle passage, or internment camps, or of the injustice of not having a government mandated equality of outcome…

No, we’ll concentrate on actual, factual, good old fashioned civics, history, reading, writing, and mathematics, with some art and music thrown in.

And, then declare all of these phony-baloney cirriculum like white, black, latino, asian, women, etc. studies to be what they really are; RAAAAAACIST! And being such, they’ll no longer be taught in publicly funded schools or universities; leave that for private schools that get NO public funds…

That would go a long way to straightening out our society…

Oh well, I have to wake up now…

    Best Wishes

  204. snuffles says:

I was basically correct in my claim.

You were 180 degrees from the truth, Patrick.

If that’s what passes for “basically correct” where you come from, that”sno surprise.

The small “cut” in aid to South Vietnam Congress passed in 1974 never got put into place because South Vietnam fell before it could be put into place.

Propping up a puppet regime didn’t work. Once again.

    Surprise.

  205. SSG Ratso says:

Yeah, Bob, but it probably also means that I have to put up or shut up, which will mean, in turn, getting my certificate and teaching.

  206. Makewi says:

Following Cooper-Church, and even after the Paris cease-fire agreement, Congress literally dropped the hammer on the Vietnam War with its passage in 1973 of a joint resolution (H.J.Res. 636) prohibiting any further appropriation or expenditure of any funds for any “combat in or over or from the shores of North Vietnam, South Vietnam, Laos or Cambodia.

Where does alphie get his 8% figure?

South Vietnam fell in May 1975.

Never believe alphie, he isn’t interested in truth.

  207. Bob Reed says:

    SSG Ratso,
    Do so, sir; please do…

That will be one step closer to making my dream a reality!

I too am getting involved in education these days, in a way. I am designing and will be teaching a mathematically simplified (no calculus necessary) course on aeronautics, rocketry, and rocket science to talented and motivated teens at a private academy…

While I won’t necessarily be able to school them on our great nation’s history, I’ll at least be able to reinforce the fact that it’s cool to be smart, and that they can learn anything they might wish to the same way that honest Abe did; by simply reading some books about it…

BTW, I dig the Outlaw! handle…I’ve been trying to dream one up for myself!

    Best Wishes…

  209. SSG Ratso says:

    8%?

Congress initially passed $1.26 billion for FY 1975.
President Ford requested that be increased to $1.4 billion, but Congress reduced it, in August 1974, to $700 million and added many conditions for it’s use. In no one’s world can these figures come to an 8% reduction.

    FY 1975 begins 1 November 1974.
In December 1974, the North captured Phouc Bhin. In January, President Ford asked for funds to buy ammunition for South Vietnam and Congress refused. South Vietnamese troops were ordered to lay down arms on 30 April 1975.

  210. Ric Locke says:

Patrick, that sort of thing is fruitless if seen as educating alphie/snuffles, which is impossible. He’s full of little factoids that “prove his point” when taken in isolation, and not all of it is deliberate lies — he’s a wannabee insider in Washington, and has adopted the terminology and attitudes, which cuts off whole swathes of reasoning ability from his mental capacity.

Hypothetical: there is a budget line item for teaching inner-city children to skydive. The Congress proposes tripling it; the President suggests a compromise of only double. The resulting article in the WaPo is headlined “PRESIDENT CUTS EDUCATION AID IN HALF”. Alphie could write that headline, whether or not he ever gets within a mile of Post headquarters. It’s the mindset.

Technically, Congress never cut aid to South Viet Nam. They required that all Americans leave, forbade direct military aid, and specified that other countries who provided aid to the RVN would have their subsidies cut, but the monetary subsidy was not reduced. Meanwhile the USSR massively increased its aid to the North, with the (100% cynically intended) result of placing the South at severe and increasing disadvantage — which is what most of us would agree constitutes “reducing aid”. It constituted a cruel betrayal, which is what Democrats are all about when their thirty-second attention span is exceeded, but in a Jesuitical, technical sense you are wrong, alphie is right, and it gave him a chance to murder people by proxy and blame it on somebody else, which is what he lives for.

    Regards,
    Ric

You might ponder what interesting thing happened in 1973 that would affect how expensive a mechanized army would be to operate. Not to mention the effects of no air support. Not to mention the morale effects of being abandoned by your allies.

The NVA that attacked in 1975 was the 5th largest army in the world at the time and used more armored vehicles than the Germans used against France in 1940. They also received aid to the tune ~$1 billion a year from the USSR.

You don’t know what the fuck you are talking about. Big surprise, that.

  213. snuffles says:

The last American combat troops left Vietnam on March 29, 1973, 4 months before the bill went into law.

In other words, when Congress passed the law that no U.S. funds were to be used to support U.S. military operations in Vietnam, there were no U.S. combat forces in Vietnam.

    They were safe at home.

Congress continued to supply South Vietnam with hundreds of millions of American taxpayer dollars right up until the day they surrendered to the commies.

Me, I just shake his hand and listen to his stories of gore and awe. The Major seems happy with the more standard in-law relationship. My guess is your son is probably embarrassed for you, P’Brain, since you use his military service as a reason to call others names and such. Then again, you’re a redumblican so maybe your level of cowardice is to be expected.

I also noticed that with his claim about Congressional aid. I used the term “grain of truth wrapped in a lie” to describe it.

Of course, being alphie, he seized upon my initial broadbrushed error and projected his own motives upon me. From his subsequent lies after I stumbled off to bed, that’s obvious. If an opponent uses the wrong term to describe exactly how Congress betrayed South Vietnam why gosh, they must wish to do the same because that’s what alphie would have done.

  252. sylvie_oshima says:

    Oh, pablo, it is fact.

the constitution also states that no law can be passed that contradicts the “established rulings” of Islam. For this reason, the new document has been condemned by critics both inside and outside Iraq as a fundamental setback for a majority of Iraq’s population — namely, its women. According to Isam al-Khafaji, an Iraqi scholar, the document “could easily deprive women of their rights.” Yanar Muhammad, a leading secular activist and the head of the Organization of Women’s Freedom in Iraq, worries that the Islamic provision will turn the country “into an Afghanistan under the Taliban, where oppression and discrimination of women is institutionalized.”

thing is, this would have happened eventually without us. Evolutionary Theory of Culture 101.
Bush spent our blood and treasure on the Grand Misadventure of the Manifest Destiny of Judeoxian Democracy, and he failed.

I think you should care….didn’t Creepy Septugenarian Guy and that dimbo Palin say we could use the “Anbar strategy” in Afghanistan?
My idol, Dr. Kilcullen, says “Not so much.”

PACKER:During the campaign, McCain talked about transferring the surge from Iraq
to Afghanistan. We’ve discussed the military side. On the political side, is there any possible counterpart to the Sunni Awakening in Afghanistan—perhaps local Taliban disenchanted with foreign influences on their leadership? Should part of our political strategy be to talk to Taliban leaders who might be prepared to negotiate with us?

KILCULLEN:Well, I doubt that an Anbar-style “awakening” is likely in Afghanistan. The enemy is very different from A.Q.I. and, in any case, Pashtun tribes have a very different makeup from Arab tribes. So even if an awakening happened it would likely play out differently from Iraq. Rather than talking about negotiations (which implies offering an undefeated Taliban a seat at the table, and is totally not in the cards) I would prefer the term “community engagement.” The local communities (tribes, districts, villages) in some parts of Afghanistan have been alienated by poor governance and feel disenfranchised through the lack of district elections. This creates a vacuum, especially in terms of rule of law, dispute resolution, and mediation at the village level, that the Taliban have filled. Rather than negotiate directly with the Taliban, a program to reconcile with local communities who are tacitly supporting the Taliban by default (because of lack of an alternative) would bear more fruit. The Taliban movement itself is disunited and fissured with mutual suspicion—local tribal leaders have told me that ninety per cent of the people we call Taliban could be reconcilable under some circumstances, but that many are terrified of what the Quetta shura and other extremists associated with the old Taliban regime might do to them if they tried to reconcile. So, while an awakening may not happen, the basic principles we applied in Iraq—co-opt the reconcilables, make peace with anyone willing to give up the armed struggle, but simultaneously kill or capture all those who prove themselves to be irreconcilable—are probably very applicable.

    “barely-winnable”

But we need to think fast, and our actions need to involve a major change of direction, focussing on securing the population rather than chasing the enemy, and delivering effective legitimate governance to the people, bottom-up, at the local level. Do that, do it fast, and we stand an excellent chance of turning things around.

  270. Makewi says:

In other words, when Congress passed the law that no U.S. funds were to be used to support U.S. military operations in Vietnam, there were no U.S. combat forces in Vietnam.

    They were safe at home.

Perhaps you should read the part I excerpted again, as that seems to be your problem. You are referring to the Church bill which was signed prior to HJ Res 636 and did deal with “American combat troops”. HJ Res 636 deals with any expenditures in the region.

As usual, kate only wishes to show the parts that help whatever idiotic point she is trying to make. What she will never tell you is that the Iraqi constitution says quite plainly that no law may be passed that is outside of the realm of Islamic law and democratic principles. It’s an attempt to bridge the gap between the old and the new and in many ways is similar to the religious aspects of our 1st amendment, albeit from a uniquely Muslim point of view.

    Stop being so dishonest kate.

    Makewi,

HJ Res 636 deals with any expenditures in the region.

HJR 636 only dealt with “combat activities by United States military forces.”

It said nothing about the hundreds of millions of dollars Congress continued to pump into the puppet regime of South Vietnam until the day it fell.

I realize your little lie that Congress cut off aid to South Vietnam is critical to the far right’s “blame everything on the liberals” mantra, but it is still a lie.

I realize your little lie that Congress cut off aid to South Vietnam is critical to the far right’s “blame everything on the liberals” mantra, but it is still a lie.

Historians have directly attributed the fall of Saigon in 1975 to the cessation of American aid. Without the necessary funds, South Vietnam found it logistically and financially impossible to defeat the North Vietnamese army. Moreover, the withdrawal of aid encouraged North Vietnam to begin an effective military offensive against South Vietnam. Given the monetary and military investment in Vietnam, former Assistant Secretary of State Richard Armitage compared the American withdrawal to “a pregnant lady, abandoned by her lover to face her fate.” 2 Historian Lewis Fanning went so far as to say that “it was not the Hanoi communists who won the war, but rather the American Congress that lost it.” 3

From George Mason University History Network.

You’re a pathetic liar, nishi, AFAIC you’re done here.

    April 29-30
Saigon falls. U. S. Navy evacuates U.S. personnel and South Vietnamese refugees. The last American combat death in Vietnam occurs. South Vietnamese President Duong Van Minh surrenders.

You’re a pathetic liar, nishi, AFAIC you’re done here.

  282. J. "Trashman" Peden says:

Bush borrowed that 700 billion from the chicoms.

So, to that end, the brilliant meme-trollers and spewers of insensate garbage, performance-artists that they are, are dismissed. Just to keep teh stoopid in dominance.

Not the way you put it. It is not sharia. That’s why you won’t cite the document. You know you’re lying and that would give up the game. Buh bye.
