Hopey McChangerson’s unilateralist cowboy diplomacy [Karl]

The Washington Post’s Glenn Kessler reports that European officials are quietly starting to freak out over what a Barack Obama presidency – and its promised direct, unconditional talks with Iran — would mean with respect to the Iranian nuclear threat:

“Dropping a unanimous Security Council condition would simply be interpreted by Iran and America’s allies as unconditional surrender, and America’s friends would view this as confirmation of America’s basic unreliability,” said François Heisbourg, a Paris-based military analyst with the International Institute for Strategic Studies. “A hell of a way to start a presidential term.”

John Bolton (and Regis) noted the irony of Obama’s unilateralism at the beginning of the month.  Apparently, he’s not the only one.  In assessing US reliability under a potential Obama administration, foreign officials also probably notice his ongoing flip-floppery on international trade.

To be fair, Dennis Ross notes that Obama could use the threat of negotiations with Iran to get nations like Russia and China to support stronger measures if negotiations fail.  On the other hand, we might discover — as Ross did with respect to the Palestinian Authority near the end of the Clinton Administration — that some are really not interested in solving a problem.  If Russia, China and perhaps others put their own relations with Iran ahead of the nuclear threat, what would an Obama administration do?

Why do you guys want to spread fear? An Obama presidency will not be the end of the world, our allies will not abandon us but maybe we will be able to convince our enemies to compromise? Why must everything be portrayed in a negative manner about Obama? Trust me after 8 years of Obama as presidency everyone will be much better off and the conservative shitfest that has taken place in the last 8 years will be cleansed. You guys are just mad that you have lost and your ideas have been exposed as a fraud. Deal with it.

  2. jdm says:

what would an Obama administration do?

Whatever it takes to get elected – and perhaps reelected. An O! admin will be just like the Clintons but w/o them. Just as political, just as poll-driven, just as corrupt, and just as mindlessly fawned over, excused and otherwise protected for no other reason than it is not Republican.

  3. thor says:

Oh how wrong you are, Progg Hero. Karl is totally un-biased. The fact that the idiot has no life outside of bagging on Barack Obama proves nothing!

  4. David L. says:

“You have lost…” My goodness, ProgressiveHero, you’ve certainly shown up the ignorant stupidity of conservatives today. I’ll bet most of those dolts thought that there are four months and some days until the election that will determine who has won and who has lost.

If you actually knew anything this website and its regulars, you’d know that we’re not all that happy about Bush and his compassionate conservatism, the Big Gov’t Conservatism espoused by so many Republicans and especially McCain and his miniscule, hair-splitting differences w/ Democrats – apart from the prosecution of the so-called War on Terror and cutting pork out of the budget.

You’re just mad that while we recognize and dislike McCain, we haven’t joined the crowd at the front of the church, waving our hands looking for a blessing from the Democrat version of a TeeVee evangelist. Deal with it.

What form would a compromise with Dinnerjacket take, do you suppose?

Push Israel half-way into the sea?

And claiming that a John McCain presidency will be a third Bush term is what if not spreading fear? I guess I haven’t heard that women will be getting abortions in “back alleys” again if another conservative is appointed to the Supreme Court. I could go on, but I know what the reply will be, “yeah, but that’s the truth.” Fear is your truth!

    Proggressive [sic] Hero,

    Your overnight homework assignment:

Given Obama’s willingness to dramatically “adjust” his positions (e.g., the reversals on telecom immunity and public campaign financing this past week) despite his previous pronouncements, would you buy a used car from him? Think really hard before you answer, fully justify your rationale, and then report back to the rest of us.

  16. Big Bang Hunter (pumping you up) says:

    – I watched Tom Daschle on FOX news Sunday today, and he might as well have sent a tape recording. The answer to every question was either “McCain flipflopped” or “McCain is Bush 3”.

    – If these Dem talking heads think they can stonewall from here to the election with those to bullshit answers to every question put to them, I think they’re going to get another lesson in American politics.

    – If I owned the studio, and the fuckers tried that crap, every time they did it I’d usher them out. I’d keep doing that until the lying bastards answered the questions.

    – One of Dascles gems: “Obama didn’t go back on his word about public financing, it was being discussed all along.”

    – So apparently all the speeches he gave, plus the pledge he signed, ment nothing.

    – So using that logic when the fuck are we supposed to believe he means what he says. Is there a decoder ring or something the electorate can use?

  17. ProggressiveHero says:

No MarkJ but I do know he is not of the party that spawned ChimpyMcBushHitler. That is reason enough alone to vote for him. Would you really want 4 more years of the SAME? Anything is better than what has been taking place here.

I know full well that it makes total perfect sense to say that you are against FISA immunity in a Dem primary campaign. I also know that if we let every lawyer sue telecoms, if god help us there is another 911 style event, that they would be less inclined to cooperate with our Government. That would be really bad for our national security. I do wish that other people on the left would see that, but it does seem like the talking points memo is actually being believed by the MoveOn types and taken out to the extreme. It is one thing to use it as a club to beat bush with, another thing to beat our own candidate over the head with it in a general election.

  18. Big Bang Hunter (pumping you up) says:

“Anything is better than what has been taking place here.

    – Since McCain is a RINO, and you agree that the sort of “One world” nonsense being preached by the far Left is not only patently wrong but dangerous, I take that to mean you’ll be voting for McCain PH.

  19. ProggressiveHero says:

Well BigBangHunter you do realize as soon as ANYONE passes amnesty that the Republican party will become a permanent minority don’t you?

Mark my word, a BarryO administration is going to get real interesting in ’10. If gas is still north of $4 and the GOP starts hammering on it, the House races could turn dramatically with even a few Senate seats feeling warm. People are not nearly as stupid as the Dems/MSM (but I repeat myself) think they are. Even with amnesty, you think energy prices don’t affect the working class even worse?

But hey, keep strokin’ it, pal.

Apropos of nothing, I just finished a dinner of deep-fried bacon, deep-fried onions, and scrambled eggs.

As I mentioned last night, if you’ve never tried deep fried bacon you’ve got to give it a shot. It comes out perfectly crisp throughout, and you can fry up a whole package of bacon in nothing flat.

Tomorrow I’ll cook potatoes in the oil that I just used for the bacon and onions, and they will be awesome as well.

After all if you can’t win with real Americans, anything that has a pulse will do. Thats what I know, and thats why I’ll fight your side to the death. I have another suggestion to consider. Hosts such as Chris Wallace should be given an electric cattle prod that they use under the interview table when a guy like Daschle starts pulling that kind of thing. Of course, I’d never suggest that it be applied to the women who appear–though Pelosi, Feinstein, Susan Rice, and Rachel Maddow might be notable exceptions.

If that’s too harsh, consider the gizmo Bill Murray uses at the start of “Ghostbusters” to test a geeky, male volunteer and an attractive coed for mindreading ability. I especially like the part where the male subject gets jolted so hard that he spits out his gum.

That kind of thing might fix Daschle’s stonewalling.

And of course it isn’t at all clear why our self-congratulatory destroyer of the unfit should assume that the demise of the Republican Party (if it occurred) would cause us all to weep. Certainly there are Republican partisans here, but I believe — in fact, I’d make a small bet: $5, maybe — that if you added up the votes of all the PW commentariat, Democratic ones would be in the majority by 55:45 at least.

The consensus of the commenters, and I believe of the host and guest posters, is that if Obama is elected, by approximately November all but the most rabid partisans will be begging Jimmy Carter to come back. This is not quite the same as being Republicans.

    Regards,

No we have principle, we just are pragmatic enough to realize politicians LIE. Wow what a novel concept. While our guys might be liars, better our liars than yours. People on the right are not pragmatic enough to keep their liars in office, hence when you Republican scandal erupts you do not close ranks. When your guy lies you throw him under the bus. Very big mistake in my estimation since it makes you all look guilty of something and is bad politics cause if you did not notice we have some horrible pieces of filth still holding on to office, Jefferson naming one. Seems your foreign policy of pragmatism (did not bush the first refer to Hussein as “he might be a thug but he’s our thug”?) does not extend to politics on our country. I realize Obama might have to *gast* lie to win in the general election meanwhile he will move the country far more in my direction than yours when he is elected. I am not one of the brainless lemings that only recently discovered Bill and Hillary are shameless politicians, I knew that and voted for them anyway knowing they would beat Republicans. Which is the same thing I will do this election, and Obama will too. Did he not just say if they bring a knife we will bring a gun?

  39. jdm says:

Thanks, PH. That was impressive. In so many ways. It’s always nice to have a confirmation and a fine description of the Machiavellian Cynicism I’ve always felt was an essential part of the Democrats.

  40. ProggressiveHero says:

Your welcome glad to be of service. Enjoy watching your ideology die before your eyes in the next 20 years. After government health care and amnesty in the next presidential administration, what will be left for you? Really amnesty will be 25 million new loyal Dem voters. Imagine how the black population votes being transfered to them, you will not have a prayer. Thanks for nominating a candidate who even if he wins will help that to happen.

Gov health care will be more of a nail in conservatives coffin than the amnesty. What will happen to the vaunted “rugged individualism” when you have to depend on the government for your health care? Look at how senior citizens vote on that issue and transfer that to the rest of the population. The fact you guys put big business on top of the interests of the majority of American citizens is sickening to me, but will end when the desire to fund our government is stacked against theirs. With every American citizen looking to the government and seeing it for what it is, a solution to problems that brings into account everyone not just personal interest, then our country will not only be better off but free of conservatism for ever. Enjoy the ride.

    – My guess is you’ll need a lot more than a gun to even the odds.

    – Your “pragmatism” is simply good old partisanship, and a total lack of principles, nothing more noble or intelligent. You’re not being noble when you put party above country, which is what your side does on a regular basis.

    – You can see it in every one of your arguments. You don’t see America as a soveriegn country, Christian-Jadeo based Representative Republic, you see it as some sort of one world fucking asocial, amoral, areligions, me-me-me, freak show, with no principles, or sense of right and wrong, a hippie commune, or some such lunacy.

    – Thats what you “pragmatism” really is, Theistic, narccissism, pure and simple.

  44. Big Bang Hunter (pumping you up) says:

Socialism is obviously alot closer to my philosophy than Winner take all/My Oil buddy is richer than your Oil buddy neoconserative bullshit. Socialism is alive and well and works in Europe. It could work here alot better than whatever has been in charge in the last 8 years.

  46. Spies, Brigands, and Pirates says:

Or maybe the “new” system of indoctrinat – oops! – I mean education. If you are this ridiculous by nature, I hope you never work for the government. We have enough absolute idiots telling us what to do, when to do it, and how to do it.

It amazes me how many people fall for the lie that Bush is stupid.

I’ll tell you what, if you were ever to stop listening to the lying proggs and the MSM bullshit, you might just discover that Bush is so much smarter than you that you should be ashamed of your own gullibility.

Socialism don’t work Bro. It NEVER has, and NEVER will, unless people like you who think they are better than others take a hike. But that ain’t gonna happen, is it, Progg-H?

You are just too smart to ever be mistaken.

Like I say to all proggs: “Be careful what you wish for, it’s liable to come true”.

Of course, that doesn’t fit your progg narrative, so fuck the real truth. You are going to believe the Bush haters, no matter how many times they outright lie to you, and sell you a rotten bill of goods.

Good luck in this life, little boy.

    BBH,

I think you are referring to “Proggmatism”.

But I do think we should salute Progg-H for being the first (that I’ve seen, anyway) lefty who is wide open about his desire for communism. Even Maxine Waters almost swallowed her tongue when she accidentally revealed herself the other day.

It’s too bad more proggs aren’t as honest as Progg-H.

If they were, we could make short work of them.

Anyway, government health care will be a disaster, as it has been EVERYWHERE it has been implemented.

Maybe that will be enough to wake up the government “educated” Utopians that seem to be exploding in their numbers.

And, we should also thank Progg-H for being honest about wanting to bring twenty five million blood sucking leeches into this country so that common sense can be put to rest once and for all! “Fuck what the people who make this country work think, let’s bring in twenty five million illiterates who don’t speak the language, and promise them the moon! We’ll never lose an election again!” What a horses ass. With that many votes, who cares about what United States citizens want? They are just intellectually stunted compared to PROGGRESSIVEHERO!!!!!!!!!(sic)

The problem with brainless entities like Progg-H, is that they think there will be some money left after they crush every business in America.

    Yup. A zero sum game.

There is a certain, finite amount of money that God gave America, and THE FUCKING REPUBLICANS STOLE IT ALL!! As absolutely third grade moronic as this idea is, THE PROGGS FUCKING BELIEVE IT!

Once again, Progg-H. Be careful what you wish for, ’cause it’s liable to come true.

Utopian dreams are fine, but they spell disaster when you are not smart enough to know how economics work, or that there really is such a thing as “history” (and you just MIGHT be able to learn something from it), or that you can’t change human nature with the point of a sword.

Yeah. Yeah. I know. All the other fascists in the history of the world have just been too STUPID to make it work.

But YOU are SOOOOOOO much smarter than they.

If you weren’t so illiterate about history and economics, I would think you were making a joke here. But you are not at all funny. You and yours are dangerous. Too stupid to see beyond the ebd of your nose.

But I am not surprised. That has been the aim of our government schools for almost fifty years now, and I guess it is coming to fruition. If I’d only known that the people I thought were flaming assholes in the sixties would be in charge of academia now, I would have started kicking right there and then, and not have waited 35 years.

Progg-H. You need either a better education or a shrink to help you with your power lust.

  57. lee says:

    – S’alright. Kickin’ ass and taking names keeps you in good practice. God gave us SecProggs for our amusement so why not.

Why not? Because shooting a full silhouette at 10 feet with a shotgun (you are a PW regular after all) is, well, challengingly useless as practice.

Unless you figure he is merely misdirecting your attention, so you don’t see live game creeping behind the target. If so, be sure to give your attention to the slinking critter in the mist, not the paper target drawing your eye.

    – Easy to forget feeding the trolls just keeps them coming back for more abuse. Nature of the beast. Must be that self-loathing thing they eat for breakfast every day.

    – I’m with Jeff. I think the whole narcissism thing is a cover for unbridled insecurity, and a really poor self image. You don’t cling to cult figure hero worship if you have a strong solid sense of “self”, and you don’t follow an ideology, that on the one hand, robs you of all self reliance, and on the other, can convince you its intelligent to root against America, and for her enemies. That there takes some special kind of cognitive dissonance, par excellence.

    – They constantly denigrate anyone of faith, and yet a lot of Proggs are more wild-eyed zealous than the most whacked out holy-roller I’ve ever met.

    – Projection, thy name is Progressive.

No thanks, I prefer the US style, heavy in individualism and property rights, with limited government powers. I’m unstylishly patriotic that way.

And don’t tell me those aren’t hard to find.
