Friday Handicapping the Blogosphere [Dan Collins; UPDATED]

Now that Genarlow Wilson has been freed by the Georgia Supreme Court, look for some of the same people who criticized Darleen for making a big deal about birth control being dispensed to 11 year olds to be absolutely outraged–even though he’s black.

(BTW, Darleen’s human fetus baby shield cartoon is up at Malkin’s)

UPDATE: From Jack and Jill Politics:

Translation for Black People:

“All y’all negros and negro lovers around the nation can stop callin’, emailin’, bloggin’, writin’ me up in the papers, makin’ me look bad on the teevee, shakin’ your fingers at my momma in the supermarket, protestin’, generally raisin’ a ruckus and makin’ my life a living hell. I Give Up.”

We won, y’all!

Good luck, Genarlow and god speed.

I just deleted my post. I was so happy when I heard on the radio. Couldn’t wait to get to a computer and post the news.

The girl in question was black. As was the DA I believe. And both of these factoids complicate the story a bit.

Who is Lester Spence?

I am currently an Assistant Professor of Political Science at Johns Hopkins University. My specialties are racial politics, urban politics, black politics and public opinion. I am currently working on a book examining the relationship between hip-hop consumption, production, and politics. More information about me and my work can be found here. I can be reached at UNBOWED AT GMAIL.COM

This is a screed against the rightwing power structure of Georgia, calling for the DA to be thrown in jail.  Here’s a comment from a commenter at another blog:

The Crime Committed By The Boy In GA Was That The Girl Was White

  1. Alec Leamas says:

The logical conclusion of “teenagershavesexOMGgivethemthepill” is reversible tubal ligations for all 9 year olds, performed in school.

Or else you are a fundie wingnut. Look it up.

  2. psychologizer says:

Opportunity to falsely identify enemy with prosecution and call him racist [greater than] chance to falsely accuse him of being pro-sexcrime (with marginal hazard to own nonracist cred).

Or so it’s gone so far.

  3. Techie says:

Anonymous continues to make the Internet proud.

    this makes me giggle

Yo! You ever try to rap with (hack-hack) tuberculosis?

  6. Yo! You ever try to rap with (hack-hack) tuberculosis?

people can sing whole operas, so, I’m feelin’ no sympathy here.

  7. Dan Collins says:

    And the boogie-woogie flu.

  8. cynn says:

Wilson’s attorney is named B.J. Bernstein. Looks like she got him off, alright.

  9. Dan Collins says:

    The DA, cynn. Please, read.

  10. cynn says:

I believe the article clearly identified her as his attorney. But perhaps your universe is more parallel than mine.

  11. cynn says:

I thought so. Typical ADD on the right.

  12. JD says:

Mad Dog 20/20 or Boone’s Farm Strawberry Hill tonight, cynn?

  13. cynn says:

Nothing, thanks; those are downmarket righty rotgut. It’s good they are releasing this kid, and stupid that a middle school is dispensing medication to minor children. The first is a constitutional issue; the second is a hamfisted attempt to address a problem better referred back to the parents of these promiscuous little tweens. Not related, or even comparable.

And will someone address the question: Is BJ the attorney or not? I’m prepared to be wrong on this.

  14. happyfeet says:

That was a good catch cynn, and a funny play on her name too. The thing about Genarlow is, once he’s free, he becomes at least like 82% less interesting.

  15. cynn says:

I’m sure he’ll be glad to hear that.

  16. happyfeet says:

I don’t know well enough to say really.

  17. happyfeet says:

    *him*

I don’t know *him* well enough to say. How he’ll feel about being formerly interestinger.

  18. cynn says:

Um, yeah, he was formerly incarcerateder. Heard through the grapevune that’s a drag.

  19. happyfeet says:

Yes. Now he can go bowling and shop at Wal-Mart and get involved in his church and play Xbox and adopt a puppy and eat Jack in the Box tacos whenever he wants and maybe even find a nice girl.

  20. cynn says:

Yes, I’m terrified of black men too. No telling what will happen when the savage gets sprung on a technicality.

  21. JD says:

    RACIST!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  22. happyfeet says:

I’m not scared of black men except for the one guy a floor down who seems to look at me kind of hungrily. Why would you even think that? This isn’t a story about pigment, it’s about justice.

  23. cynn says:

Change your Depends, JD: it’s simply ugly.

  24. Pablo says:

Nothing, thanks; those are downmarket righty rotgut.

I dunno, cynn. Last time I drank either, I was most decidedly liberal. I was also young and foolish, and it all seems to meld together now.

  25. JD says:

I do not like Depends. The box said they do not leak, and are the most absorbent. Me and a couple buddies (back when I still drank) proved that not to be the case, by wearing Depends for an entire New Years Eve celebration. We were not allowed to enter a bathroom all right. Depends leak.

  26. happyfeet says:

I was never liberal. One time I considered the merits of socialism and my my dad made me eat at the dining room table alone.

  27. JD says:

Your father was a wise man. My father is a total socialist. My godmother is an avowed Commie. Family get togethers are not always so fun.

  28. happyfeet says:

That’s cooler really cause you are a bona fide independent thinker. Dad and I had different takes on things, but I’ll just have to wonder how much of my general take on things I inherited. My sister voted for Clinton once. We pulled through that as a family, but it was pretty awkward there for awhile.

  29. JD says:

My Dad has algore, Kerry, Clinton (both), Obama, and Edwards stickers all over the tailgate of his truck. He has ruined a very nice dually. We get along, but never speak of politics. Ever. He hides the NY Times when we visit him. It is for the best.

  30. cynn says:

JD — so there goes my Halloween costume. Butthead.

  31. happyfeet says:

Mom and dad frowned on any kind of bumper sticker. One time mom scotchtaped one inside her back window but it fell off – she said it was because of the heat and humidity.

  32. JD says:

cynn – Go as a tree, or a hole in the ozone layer, or a physical manifestation of anthropogenic global warming. Moral of the story, Depends lies like Foer and TNR.

I have no idea how I got to be conservative. Russell Kirk of The Conservative Mind, was related to my mother, so maybe I learned something from him.

  33. happyfeet says:

I do not know Russell Kirk. Here are his 10 principles.

    I like this one:

Seventh, conservatives are persuaded that freedom and property are closely linked. Separate property from private possession, and Leviathan becomes master of all. Upon the foundation of private property, great civilizations are built. The more widespread is the possession of private property, the more stable and productive is a commonwealth. Economic levelling, conservatives maintain, is not economic progress. Getting and spending are not the chief aims of human existence; but a sound economic basis for the person, the family, and the commonwealth is much to be desired.

Mostly I think the “are persuaded” instead of “believe” locution is cool. I’m stealing that.

  34. cynn says:

Thanks for the suggestions, JD, but they’re all invisible to repugs, and that cuts into my candy intake. Maybe I’ll be another tax cut in fishnets. I can just smell the almond joys….

  35. JD says:

happyfeet – I wish I had known how important of a man he was when I was around him. I think his wife, Annette, is my uncle’s sister. They were always incredibly interesting, I would just too young to understand how interesting. I never really knew what kind of thinker he was until his funeral.

  36. JD says:

Tax cuts in fishnets … Almond Joys ?! Hell, I would invite you in and let you pick out whatever you would like.

  37. happyfeet says:

Oh. I really should know a bit more about him. I are persuaded of his importance by his bio.

  38. happyfeet says:

He sounds like a cool guy besides, with a bonus Halloween angle:

Kirk was born near the railroad yards at Plymouth, Michigan, in 1918 and lived much of his life at his ancestral place, Piety Hill, in Mecosta, Michigan—a little village in the stump-country. There he converted a toy factory into his library and office. His Italianate house is adorned with sculpture and architectural antiques snatched from the maws of the urban renewers of western Michigan. At home he was a famous narrator of ghostly tales, many of them picked up during his travels (often afoot) in Scotland and Ireland, Mediterranean and Alpine lands, and Africa.

  39. JD says:

I kind of figured it out when I first heard the quote about him from President Reagan. He was an interesting man. Unfortunately, most of what I have learned has been posthumous. I remember that he was always fun to visit when I was young. Their home was … ecclectic, and he was always telling really scary ghost stories.

I just read that bio, and am again reminded of how big of a man he was for such a small man.

  40. happyfeet says:

He was buds with T.S. Eliot. So you are two degrees from T.S. Eliot, so now happyfeet is three degrees from T.S. Eliot. That is so damn cool.

  41. JD says:

I will have to ask my mother who all of the people were that I met at his funeral. We stayed the week in his home, and there was a constantly stream of writers, thinkers, politicians, etc … dropping by to give their condolences to Annette, have drinks, tell stories.

  42. happyfeet says:

Your dad didn’t go I take it. That could have been a good experience for him. I had Thanksgiving once with liberal Episcopalians and they played African music and served some sort of seafood linguini and served the wine I had brought even though it was completely wrong for the dish.

  43. JD says:

Dad went, and really enjoyed Russell and his family. They were fascinating people. He was not quite as liberal back then. The socialist streak in him continues to gradually widen as time passes. Sad, it is. Progressive. The breaking point can be tracked back to the 2000 elections.

  44. Sean M. says:

Has your dad ever lived in a “Socialist Republic,” JD (if you’re still looking in on this thread)? My best friend’s family is from South Korea, and one of his uncles was a total Com-symp through his college years. Somehow, he got to spend some time in North Korea–and was allowed to leave again–and that cured him forever of his delusions.
