Iraq and Afghanistan Veteran Shot In His NJ Driveway [Pablo]

….by a lunatic “angry at the government”. Senior Airman Jonathan Schrieken remains in critical condition after taking a .38 slug to the heart. From MSNBC:

WILLINGBORO — The Pennsauken man who shot and wounded a member of the U.S. Air Force before killing himself left suicide notes that indicated he was “angry at the government and wanted to make a statement” on Independence Day, one of the man’s relatives said yesterday.
Matthew J. Marren, 22, of Walnut Avenue, drove to a home on Windsor Lane rented by Senior Airman Jonathan Schrieken, 22, at about 5:30 p.m. Wednesday. Marren got of this vehicle, found Schrieken outside the house, shot him once in the chest with a small-caliber firearm, then turned the gun on himself, said Burlington County First Assistant Prosecutor Ray Milavsky.
Marren was pronounced dead at Lourdes Medical Center of Burlington County in Willingboro later Wednesday night.
Schrieken was taken to Cooper University Hospital in Camden where was listed in critical but stable condition yesterday afternoon, Milavsky said.
…..
Schrieken is stationed at McGuire Force Base. He works as a loadmaster for the 6th Airlift Squadron.
Marren’s aunt, Terina Henderson of Trion, Ga., said she spoke to Marren’s mother yesterday who told her Marren left two notes, one in his home and one in his car, indicating he was upset with the government.
She said she did not know the exact wording in the notes, but said Marren was “mad at the government and wanted to make a statement … that’s why he did what he did on the Fourth of July.”

From all available information, Marren did not know SRA Schrieken and targeted him solely because he was in the military. SRA Schreiken lived with several other service members and it appears that his home was an attractive target to the nutcase because of it.
Those who don the uniform these days have some expectation of being shot at because of it. But not in Willingboro, New Jersey. SRA Schrieken is very close to a friend of mine, and you can get a bit more detail from her over at LGF
Godbotherers, you’re on. And let me get the ball rolling with a fervent prayer for SRA Schrieken’s complete recovery.

(Posted by Dan, because Pablo’s having login problems; and don’t forget Burrhog, about whom I am now profoundly worried. And withal, another timely reminder that not all terrorists are Muslims.)

The media should treat this as a near-miss, if you ask me. The nutcase is the constant, his target was the variable.

  2. Vladimir says:

That’s just awful. It’s not as if a Senior Airman has enough stress on the job, but to come home and be attacked… that’s just disgusting.

I’ve a neighbor who I don’t know, but I know he’s a Veteran of the current war. I wanted to say thanks to him the other day, but instead I just kept quiet and left the guy alone.

Boston is such a hotbed of intolerant orthodox liberalism that I fear being seen as a “jingoistic, nationalistic, imperialist blah-blah”.

  3. Jeffersonian says:

I saw (over at Insty’s, I think) that an ALF/ELF type left a bomb under someone’s car the other day, too. Could it be the wackos have been emboldened by their political successes as of late?

  4. TheGeezer says:

The left is responsible for the innocent airman’s wounds. The left parrots crap and lies to foment hate even against those who are innocent. I will pray for the airman and his family and for justice for contemporary liberals.

  5. Shawn says:

Good vibes being sent that way as I type.

  6. Great Mencken's Ghost says:

I’ll light a candle for Airman Schreiken.

And I want to know who the lefty bastard was reading or watching. All of them.

TW– Associated Pest: any lefty blogger or journalist as far as I’m concerned.

  7. happyfeet says:

The left is not at fault. Just as easily could have been Katie Couric laying dead. In a puddle of her own sputum.

  8. TheGeezer says:

Couric just may become suicidal when she realizes – yes – SHE HAS SPUTUM JUST LIKE EVERYONE ELSE!

Tell him thanks. It might not show outwardly – but it means rather alot. I can only ask you to take my word on this.

  10. Vladimir, our neighbor was deployed to Iraq in 2004. We mowed his lawn. Babysat his daughters for his wife from time to time.

  11. papertiger says:

The shooter is dead. Took the cowards way out and shot himself.
The victim is in stable condition, and was picked out at random.

SO WHY ARE THE MEDIA WITHHOLDING THE CONTENTS OF THE NOTE?

This “ongoing investigation” dodge is getting old very quickly.
Ongoing investigation is media speak for batshit crazy liberal inspired to murder, as far as I am concerned.

  12. happyfeet says:

There could also be a racial element to the case, as long as they seem to be encouraging speculation.

  13. Pablo says:

papertiger, the media may not yet have the notes. From what I’m told secondhand from someone who has seen them, the shooter sounds like a standard America hater.

The better question is why aren’t they reporting this at all, outside of the local area. Note that the MSNBC story is linked to their PhillyBurbs.com affiliate.

This happened 4 days ago. Where’s Olberdouche?

  14. Pablo says:

happyfeet, is that pure speculation on your part? Both parties are white, and yet you may be on to something.

  15. B Moe says:

I don’t think racial identity is strictly tied to color anymore, Pablo, but I am not sure exactly how that works. Damn that Professor Caric, he is never around when you really need him.

  16. happyfeet says:

oh – yes – pure speculation. That’s probably irresponsible.

  17. Shawn says:

    All right, I gotta ask…was Marren a hypermasculine weenie-boy?

This is a sad story about a sad man who wanted to do something really crazy and justify it somehow, for posterity or whatever. The guy was deranged, period. He could have shot a woman because he couldn’t have romantic success, shot a farmer because he ate a rotten potato, a man in an SUV because he got cut off last week, or shot a soldier because he didn’t like the current war. He shot someone because he was a deranged idiot. The why is just a screen for his inner idiocy, derangement, and cowardice.

And this one doofus doesn’t make a statement about all of us who are against the war any more than the actions of some doofuses at Abu Ghraib represent all of those in uniform. This wasn’t a matter of Bush Derangement Syndrome so much as Going Out With Some Press narcissistic assholery.

And Vladamir, go ahead and thank the guy. Do it in person if you are worried about what the neighbors will think, but do it. I do it, and I don’t even mention that I don’t support the war. My opinion on current events has nothing to do with my gratitude that people choose to serve in the military. As Napoleon supposedly said: there are no bad regiments, only bad colonels.

The article said ‘small caliber weapon’. The pitiful shooter was undergunned and unmanned. I’m annoying the big man upstairs on behalf of the airman and burrhog.

  22. B Moe says:

“…the actions of some doofuses at Abu Ghraib (don’t) represent all of those in uniform…

You might want to let more of your buddies in on that one.

  23. Vladimir says:

I do intend on thanking my neighbor….. I guess the reason I’ve passed on it before has really been a bit more about how busy foot traffic is in my neighborhood and how the two times I’ve ever seen him, he seemed to be in a hurry and so was his girlfriend. There’s no good excuse to not thank the guy. I do support the war, by the way.

  24. jon says:

    B Moe,

I do let them know, although they act like they don’t want in on that big secret. Some of “my buddies” are complete assholes, and I tell them that, too.

    Vladamir,

You don’t have to bake a red, white and blue cake with sparklers on top. Just thank the guy. It’s really easy. “Hey, thanks for your service” only takes three seconds and radical leftist passersby might think you are secret gay lovers and thus not shoot you.

  25. cynn says:

My best wishes to Mr. Schrieken; I hope he recovers quickly.

“Could it be the wackos have been emboldened by their political successes as of late?”

What a bunch of spew. Please refrain from using this innocent man as a prop in your partisan rant.

  26. timb says:

I know I always take a moment of my conversation with my cousin to remind him he was insane to choose Marine Lt. out of Annapolis, but that he’s exactly the kind of officer who makes the US military a great institution.

I know my brother-in-law has been deployed twice in the last four years (once to support Balkans peacekeeping and the second to support Iraqi ____…I’m not sure what to call it) and I am very aware he has sacrificed the toddler-dom of two glorious little boys and possibly his marriage to my sister (it’s very rough when the other person is gone). He loves the “thanks” he gets from people, anyone.

As for the crazy guy, Cynn said it best. Last week, here in Indiana an OFF DUTY State Policeman stopped to help a stranded motorist. Off-duty, I said. The motorist shotgunned the trooper, creating a widow and three children who want to know when Dad is coming home. The motorist then took his life.

When I find out what political party he belonged to, I’ll pass it on for theGeezer, et. al.

By “as of late,” do you mean the elections 9 months ago?
