I like the Breeders. Loved “Cannonball”. They showed up at a time when there was still hope for pop/rock music to recover from Bryan Adams & Hall & Oates. Of course, the whole thing devolved into a bunch of mooks like pantera sweating and grunting, and the crime against humanity that was oasis (or take your pick from any of the mop-topped moaners and groaners we’ve been subjected to over the last 10 yrs).
But a great rock anthem? Sorry, no.
“Kashmir” is a rock anthem.
“What’s going on?” by 4non-blonds is a rock anthem.
I’m into the Tragically Hip, Soul Coughing, Morphine and jazz, so Kim Deal doesn’t really speak to me, other than I’d might get an urge to wank my jizz into her guitar case if I was backstage during a Breeders show.
Ya see, I think myself funny in a dark, sticky, Jewel-must-suckle-me sort’a way. Sorry.
It’s probably fair to call it a great rock anthem, unless we’re going to go around splitting hairs between rock and alternative, which really the Breeders were barely just. The reality is that alternative was rock and roll in the 90’s, and the Breeders were one of the better groups that fell under the power pop wing of the alternative movement.
Deal’s fucking brilliant–thanks for the link Dan. BTW I’m not a huge fan of chick rock, but you have to give credit where it’s due. Like here–check out the much maligned Courtney tapping into a divine vein: http://it.youtube.com/watch?v=AGY_kacIIgc
The Breeders are, in fact, the shit, as were the Pixies (and the success of the Breeders vice Frank Black solo is illuminating). Interesting, the version I have of that song is slightly different from the link, and I have Last Splash. Not different in structure, just slightly in execution.
@Henry
The video linked uses the version of the song as it appears on the single, which is a rerecorded version of the album, which also features a rerecording of a different track on the album; that’s where you’re noticing the difference.
Shame the band had to get interrupted by Kelley’s problems; it’s not difficult to see them following up on Last Splash and getting big. They don’t sound the same w/o Jim Macphearson and Josephine Wiggd. But at least Kelley’s clean now

That’s just a song.
Easy on the Hall & Oates there buddy.
Not doing anything for me.
I myself wouldn’t even consider that a rock song. Indie? new wave? alternative? pop? Who knows…but not rock.
“Philadelphia Freedom” is supposed to be anthemic but I never got that one. Maybe you have to be from Philadelphia.
I sense I might be in the minority on this one. Still, it’s my story and I’m sticking to it.
The comments on YouTube are largely in accord with you.

Thank you! And can we just take Coldplay out and hang them? If they’re not a capitol crime, they ought to be.
Live Earth is on Bravo. You’d think with Al Gore’s star power would have at least landed the simulcast on Versus, Spike or Oxygen.

Crap!
I like your taste in music, Dan. However, as far as Breeder songs are concerned….Cannonball and Last Splash

Thanks, Themistocles. However, I get woozy imagining Courtney tapping into veins.
If that’s a rock anthem, Juice Newton’s the next to be inducted into the R&R Hall of Fame.
