PW’er in Peril [Dan Collins]

One of our fellowship, burrhog, has been suffering a nightmare of medical woes.  I’m waiting to see whether and what I’m allowed to share about his situation, but I thought that I’d just state that he’s in extremis an could use your prayers, if you’re the prayerful kind.

Christopher Taylor has a wonderful memorial post up about his dad at Word Around the Net, which he usually devotes to highlighting the best from others.

David Thompson has some views on Gynemachians in the US.

Michael Yon brings the heat.

The Commissar takes another step toward Trutherdom, and prompts me, histrionically, homoerotically, and speaking for myself, to send this musical postcard, fittingly from the most irreplaceable loss to American popular music of the last ten years.

Here’s a link to one of my fave Eno songs (with Cluster, in this case), ”Broken Head.” I won’t vouch for the quality of the video, but the song is great.

I have 4 of the kids I was speaking to on Friday about Memorial Day in the house. We are talking about the Islamic threat to the world, not just our Country! Can anyone PLEASE give me a link to the picture of that Saudi highway sign that points to Muslims only??

If anyone is interested,I’ll post a copy of the talk I gave, and the (almost vicious) reaction to it.

Sorry Happyfeet, didn’t get back on the comp until now,but it WAS a great and I think worthy discussion. Thanks GMG and Pablo, your links were a help.Remember, these are young kids,(8th grade) so I had to keep this simple.

Hi,I’m Tinas dad and I was invited here to talk to you about Memorial Day.I’d like to thank your teacher for letting me speak today and if you have any questions please feel free to ask when I’m done.

    TW;schools59….Get outta my head!!

When I was first asked to come here,I thought a story or a poem would be a good way to get approach this subject with you,but honestly? I don’t write so well so I thought I’d just tell you straight from my heart what Memorial day should mean to us all.

When you think of Memorial Day,do you think of cookouts, parades and a Monday off from school? I know I sure did. But Memorial day is WAY more than that. It’s a day that you should think, and I mean really think about this Country you live in.

What exactly does it mean to be “free”…What are your “freedoms” as you see them? How did they come to be? SACRIFICE. Sacrifice by those that came before us and fought for those freedoms. The people that saw the U.S. as an ideal,a great force for what’s good and right. Our soldiers sailors and airmen who fought and at times died for what they believed in!! They were and are regular folks just like me and you that saw a duty and in all good conciense followed their hearts.

Memorial Day is a day to think about and THANK these people. It’s a day to THINK about the freedom you have in this Country that most in this world don’t. Its a day to recognize our veterans AND our active duty military. Because without them,we wouldn’t be free today. I also want to say one more thing…please think about this and if you’ve heard it before,I’m sorry…But freedom Isn’t free. It’s earned by recognizing honor, duty and responsibility.

Well,I said I couldn’t write, and to be fair I did ad lib frequently, but this is what I had to go with. There were MANY Bush Sucks comments,a ton of rolling of the eyes,a buttload of derision,ONE good question and a VERY red-faced Tina. The other two parents? One was ok,the other quoted Edwards….sometimes? Wall/head seems the better option.

  28. happyfeet says:

That’s just kind of sad. The same people who bemoan that we “have not been asked to sacrifice for this war” betray themselves when they reveal just how little they have to give.

  29. Blitz says:

Happyfeet, just in case you get this…

I’m more verbally oriented than my typing/writing skills may suggest. That was my draft of what I intended to say.I just find it incredibly difficult to write/type because it’s NEVER what I want to convey. That’s why when I do post here, the post is always prefaced by “I’m too dumb to post here” comments.

  30. happyfeet says:

I think you did a great job at tailoring your talk for your audience, and I think any one of the kids would have had a tough time picking any single sentiment out of your talk and fashioning any kind of rebuttal. It matters what you did. At some time one of those kids will need to reach for an image so as to visualize a patriot, having seen so few, and they will think of you.
