I would love to hear Mayor Nagins views on this.

But Lang questions whether the term “minority” will be defined the same way by then. Nearly 2 percent of the population is identified as multiracial, he noted. And that percentage is likely to rise with intermarriage among races and ethnic groups. The notion of what is “white” is also likely to shift as it has since the 1900s, when Southern and Eastern Europeans were not counted as white.

“I don’t think that officially there will ever be a moment where we’re at majority-minority status, because long before you get to that point, the meaning of the term majority will be completely redefined,” he said.

    Huh?

  3. Techie says:

Read the comments on the WaPo page, they are priceless.

  4. Nanonymous says:

Actually the African-Americans who were city residents for decades are some of the biggest winners from this.  Property values have doubled in some places in just four years – that’s a conservative take, and includes the effects of the price slump that has set in.  Those guys are cashing in, and they deserve it.

So Mrs. Nanonymous and I are sitting pretty.  A nice payback for that corpse that got tossed in our yard as a welcome from the local drug dealers back in ‘03.

It’s an interesting phenomenon to watch.  Most of my neighbors – heck, all of them – were welcoming when we moved in.  The Panthers did tape a nasty “how to fight gentrification” poster to the tree in front of my house back in ‘05, but those two tubby chicks didn’t look much like the avatars of revolution to me, berets notwithstanding.

  5. Proud Liberal says:

It figures that the racist Republicans are now planning on infiltrating traditionally Democratic strongholds.  This is an example of another Rovian plot to suppress votes and dilute minority representation, all while silencing the voices of minorities, and stifling dissent.  All in the name of “gentrification”.

While these racists are at it, they are displacing low income minorities and single moms, driving up the costs of housing, transportation, and the overall cost of living, forcing the underprivileged to live further and further away from their already low paying jobs.

Is there anything you conservatives will not stoop to in order to oppress people ?

  6. Blue Hen says:

Actually, I’m so low, I reach to reach up to stoop, but I suppose that the answer to your question is, Nope.

  7. JD says:

Techie – I could not get to the comments section at the WaPo, but is it safe to assume that they are similar to the nutty position taken by Proud Liberal ?

  8. Nanonymous says:

You know, well I’m at it, gentrification has taught me some interesting stuff.  First of all, the GOP needs to get its s**t together and figure out how to talk to the black middle class.  Those guys talk like Richard Nixon when it comes to crime – and they have a right to, since they’re the ones who are its victims.  There’s significant support in the District for serious law enforcement and gun rights (I once saw an elderly black woman wave William Bratton’s book in the police chief’s face at a neighborhood meeting), but the city effectively gets what the local Democratic Party agrees to provide – and the effective consensus among Democratic politicians in DC is sociologically-driven law enforcement and gun control.

And THAT, unfortunately, is not going to change, ‘cause take it from me, there aren’t too many people in the District echoes my own doctrine of compassionate fascism.

  9. Dan Collins says:

I imagine you ought to look at Proud Liberal’s email address before you go any further.

  10. JD says:

I bet Jeff would have a field day with this quote.  I am still scratching my head.

  11. Techie says:

Oh yes, key highlights include discussion on how some posters are “gonna keep whitey out”, “if DC council allows this to happen, it proves that they are out to get us”, “We only get guns now because of whitey” “Whitey likes his hispanic slaves now better than his old black ones”…..etc.

A few sane voices, but you get the general picture.  This is the Washington Post’s reader base, or local malcontents at the library’s computer cluster?

  12. Dan Collins says:

    JD–

I think this refers to the previous paragraph, in which Lang enunciate’s Ace’s ultimate nightmare coming to pass in the near future:

But Lang questions whether the term “minority” will be defined the same way by then. Nearly 2 percent of the population is identified as multiracial, he noted. And that percentage is likely to rise with intermarriage among races and ethnic groups. The notion of what is “white” is also likely to shift as it has since the 1900s, when Southern and Eastern Europeans were not counted as white.

In other words, if trends continue, even Scandies will be considered white–and then, will the term have any meaning at all?

A selection from the comments, if you will:

    Strawberry23 wrote:

How is this news? Anyone can walk around DC and see this. Anyone Black can walk around Georgetown and Dupont Circle and see all the sidways looks of fear and disdain. I’m just waiting to see if they–and you know who they are–will gentrify SE now that we have a baseball team. It’d be funny in a sad way to see them gentrify Benning Rd., Minnesota Ave., and MLK Blvd.

No, who are they, Strawberry23, do tell.  Plus, white people living on MLK?  The horror…. the horror….

  14. eLarson says:

It’d be funny in a sad way to see them gentrify …Minnesota Ave….

    Uff da

  15. Jeffersonian says:

    There goes da ‘hood…

  16. McGehee says:

    Damn those honky blockbusters!

  17. Jeffersonian says:

    Damn those honky blockbusters!

Reading the article’s comments, this is pretty much the gist of them.  It’s like Archie Bunker with a tan.

    Serious89 paranoia.

  18. Nanonymous says:

Sounds like some Angry Young Men at the library.  Really, though – it’s possible to say anything on the Internet, as we all know.  I have not encountered many of these sentiments – people are sometimes rude when they don’t know you, but my neighbors have never been anything but welcoming and friendly.  It struck me as sort of significant that I had never seen the Panthers who were putting up posters.

  19. Sticky B says:

Gentrification? What kind of codeword is that?

  20. o-dub says:

If you racists don’t quit chasing all of the sistas out of DC, I won’t have any chocolate Ho-Ho’s left to eat.

  21. JD says:

I am having a hard time figuring out if I am a majority-minority or a minority-majority.  And, I hope that after they get done redefining white, black, majority, and minority, they let everybody in on what the new definitions are.

  22. DC is just becoming more diverse.

  23. Pablo says:

Separate is never equal! Now get the fuck on, cracker.

  24. McGehee says:

And, I hope that after they get done redefining white, black, majority, and minority, they let everybody in on what the new definitions are.

Well, now you’re just trying to spoil their fun.

  25. JD says:

McGehee – Doesn’t that passage really prove one of Jeff’s long running ideas insofar as it relates to usage of language ?

Could you imagine this same article being written about a traditionally white suburb, and the residents complaining about an influx in minorities, or majorities, whatever …

  26. McGehee says:

McGehee – Doesn’t that passage really prove one of Jeff’s long running ideas insofar as it relates to usage of language ?

    Of course it does.

    JD – Wasn’t my rejoinder funny ?

  27. JD says:

That goes without saying … generally a given.

  28. McGehee says:

I just need to hear it once in a while… cheese

  29. McGehee says:

    Oh, and this:

Could you imagine this same article being written about a traditionally white suburb, and the residents complaining about an influx in minorities, or majorities, whatever …

…gives me an opening to pimp this.
