Katharsis [Dan Collins]

E&P Headline:

Steiger: Pearl Murder ‘Confession’ Is Stark Reminder of Tragedy

Managing Editor of the WSJ.  If you read the article, Steiger does speak of Daniel Pearl’s loss and of the dangers to reporters of assignment in Iraq and Afghanistan.  But he doesn’t anywhere allude to tragedy per se.

Still, Stegier stressed that it was a reminder of the terrible tragedy that was Pearl’s death. “What a great loss he was,” Steiger said. “It reminds us how dangerous a place the world has become.”

He added that he is reminded of Pearl’s death every day when he comes to work. “When I get off at my floor, I look at the Daniel Pearl memorial, there is no forgetting that,” he said. “Unfortunately, Danny was the first of many, many journalists killed in the broader conflict, in Iraq, Afghanistan, elsewhere, between radical Islam and Westerners.”

It is a tragedy for Daniel Pearl, his family, his friends.  I think, though, that a more appropriate word for this article might be atrocity.

Headline from WorldNet Daily:

Rosie defends 9/11 mastermind

Suggests U.S. tortured, ‘robbed him of humanity’ to get false confession

Well, what can you say?  Masterminds have to stick together.  On the other hand, if we wanted to rob him of his humanity, we could just have given him a talk show.

    How about “tarbaby”?

the broader conflict… between radical Islam and Westerners.

Yeah, that’s it. “Conflict”.  I suppose it’s just too difficult to describe this as one side attacking and forcing war upon the other.  Either way he’d be making some sort of statement.  Describing this, distantly, as a “conflict” between two parties tells me he really doesn’t feel anything at all when he walks past the Pearl memorial.

This, however, is my favorite part:

It reminds us how dangerous a place the world has become.

Because we all know how safe the world used to be.  You know, back when wars were fought for pragmatic reasons and stuff.

So, er, Rosie. Being reduced to your component atoms on a sunny autumn day no longer counts as being robbed of your humanity. Is that what you’re trying to tell us?

Exact-i-mundo.  I’ve long rankled at the misuse of “tragedy” when describing terrorist attacks.  “Hamlet” is a tragedy, not Pearl’s murder.

Probably why he married her. Sucker.
