Well-Behaved Women Rarely Cause Kerfuffles [Dan Collins]

Yesterday at CPAC right-wing rockstar Ann Coulter opened her stentorian piehole and “declined” to comment on John Edwards, saying: ““I’d say something about John Edwards, but if you say ‘faggot’ you have to go to rehab.” I guess she was out to prove that the idea of a faggot is a social construction.

Now, all of the people who in the past have referred to Coulter as a tranny are up in arms.  I guess if you reach a certain level of notoriety, such as if you go to work as blogmistress for a presidential candidate’s campaign, you have to watch what you say.

Howard Dean is calling for Republican candidates formally to denounce Coulter’s latest transgression.

“I denounce it, Howard.”

Joe Malchow has the trailer for the movie Joe & Valerie, which is based on true events.

  1. BJTexs says:

Just out of curiosity, did Howard Dean ever apologise to Katherine Harris for comparing her to Stalin?

    Just askin’…

Ann crossed the line. Those who argue that she is the right’s street fighter ignore two points; she’s way cleverer than this joke and I don’t want to be part of a political process that seeks to emulate the looney leftards.

Call me idealistic but I’d like to be more creative than just name calling. I’d rather Ann Coulter didn’t aspire to be Amanda Marcotte. She’s smarter than that.

Dan, wouldn’t Joe be in a convertable rather than a humveee? More heroic?

  2. Dan Collins says:

Yeah, I’m with you on the convertible.  More Bond.  But you’d have to bring that up with Joe Malchow.

  3. RiverCocytus says:

I think the joke was that she’s going to get plastered for what she just said.

If anyone, Ann would be clearly aware of the irony.

    TW: hell79, as in, “I’m on a highway to…”

  4. RiverCocytus says:

I won’t argue it wasn’t in bad taste, but I also don’t believe for a moment she thinks Edwards is gay.

  5. ed says:

    Hmmm.

What I find amusing is that the reaction I’m seeing actually proves Coulter’s point.

  6. RC says:

All these people that want representatives of the non-left (it is, after all, a coalition of conservatives, republicans, aware libertarians, orphaned democrates, orphaned liberals, etc.) that want to “keep their hands clean” and “not stoop to the oppositions level” are the reason we are loosing.  And comparing anything Ann Coulter has EVER said to Ms. Marcotte is, say, something less than accurate.

These people fight dirty and refusing to fight back just means you lose.

    tw: zipper63, you’re kidding, right?

  7. RC says:

Besides he looks, talks and acts gay.  In that nonsexual, just dumbass sort of way.

  8. BJTexs says:

    RC, ed, River, et al

I’m not agruing that Coulter should be compared to Marcotte. I know better than that. I’m arguing that she could have been cleverer than to toss around that sort of term especially because of its connection to those gay hating lunatics in Kansas. (God Hates Fags, etc.) I admit that as an Evangelical those people make me crazy and I’m sensitive to the word.

She’s got a great talent for skewering the left. This one was not up to her standards and probably does more harm than good. As far as fighting dirty, shining the light on nthe bile that the left vomits is a better plan than ramping up the name calling.

Although, admittedly, name calling is some kind of FUN!

  9. commander0 says:

The faggots should be in up arms that they are being tarred with the Edwards brush.  Very nasty, indeed.  Oh shit, Big Nurse is here to take me back to the common room.  Bye y’all.  Lalala, oh hello Mr Bonaparte, lala lala la, It’s a wonderful life for me.  Medicine now?

  10. Dan Collins says:

Joe and Valerie, screaming from the gallery

    Say he must be fried.

The Judge: “Request denied, but I feel your woe,

    Oh oh oh.”

And as the words are leaving his lips,

    Karl Rove creeps up behind.

  11. McGehee says:

She could have talked about Edwards without using the word “faggot.” Everyone knows “metrosexual” means the same thing.

  12. Pablo says:

And once again, the world is doing exactly what Ann Coulter wants it to do: talking about Ann Coulter.

CPAC should know better. You invite Coulter, you know what you’re going to get.

As for Mr & Mrs Plame, was it Richard Armitage that “betrayed” them? Why don’t we ever hear about him from them?

  13. Farmer Joe says:

What I find amusing is that the reaction I’m seeing actually proves Coulter’s point.

Yeah, but the point was a dumb one in the first place. If I go to Harlem carrying a sign that says, “I’m going to get beat up because this sign says ‘nigger’,” my point will be proved when I get beat up. So what? It would still be a wrong thing to do, and the people who beat me up would be justified in doing it.

  14. Farmer Joe says:

Any time my lefty friends start ranting about Coulter, I always say that no one on the right takes her seriously. I wish the Repubs would back me up on this and stop inviting her to things.

  15. B Moe says:

It would still be a wrong thing to do,

    Yes.

…and the people who beat me up would be justified in doing it.

    No.

  16. Jeff Goldstein says:

    Stop hotlinking photos.

  17. Dan Collins says:

    Yessir.

If you don’t think Coulter speaks for us, Gleen’s just proven that she is the embodiment of all that is wrong with our culture.

  18. RC says:

    BJTexs,

Good point, I do expect better quality smack downs from Ms. Coulter.  Sorry for the misread, my bad.

    Farmer Joe,

Re: my comments above, I guess you are one of the ones that doesn’t care how badly mauled you become.

BTW, I would never, ever, advocate dirty tricks, lies or anything unethical.  I’m just years and years beyond the “make nice” attitude and want some bare knuckles brawlers to start doing the same thing to the enemy that they’ve been doing to us for—pretty much—ever.

  19. Jeff Goldstein says:

See, had she just stuck with bunnies…

  20. Matt, Esq. says:

The GOP should denounce Coulter why ?  Because she claims republican membership ?

HOw bout this – let the market handle it- if you don’t like what Ann has tro say, don’t buy her book, read her coulums, etc.

Free speech is great unless liberals don’t like what you’re saying- then its hate speech.

(not to mention, all this attention is more likely than not, exactly what Coulter wants).

  21. MarkD says:

She forgot to add the magic words: “not that there’s anything wrong with that.”

    /snark

Seriously, it was a dumb thing to say.  Ann should save the offensive remarks for serious times and serious targets.  We all know Edwards is going back to the other America, the one with square mile mansions, the one where Kerry and kennedy and Gore live.

  22. ed says:

    Hmmm.

I know better than that. I’m arguing that she could have been cleverer than to toss around that sort of term especially because of its connection to those gay hating lunatics in Kansas. (God Hates Fags, etc.) I admit that as an Evangelical those people make me crazy and I’m sensitive to the word.

    Phelps?

Frankly I didn’t associate that in any way at all.  Not everyone is an Evangelical so there isn’t a direct connection.  I myself am an Animist so the issue of religion doesn’t apply.

The point, as I see it, is a reprise of the whole “Animal Farm” aspect of modern discourse.  Faggot is not acceptable.  ChristoFacist is.  Caling for the assassination of Hugo Chavez is wrong.  Calling for the assassination of Bush or Cheney is quite fine on national tv.

Personally I think her comment was spot on.

  23. mel says:

“but I also don’t believe for a moment she thinks Edwards is gay.”

She didn’t say he was gay. She said “faggot.”

  24. lee says:

    Ann said “faggot”?

Holy shit, lets get out the stake, and build a bonfire!

I’d say more about those incensed, but if you say “pussies”, you have to go to rehab.

  25. Bob says:

I laughed when I read La Coulter’s line.

Come to think of it John Edwards does have a certain je ne sais quoi, doesn’t he?

  26. Farmer Joe says:

Re: my comments above, I guess you are one of the ones that doesn’t care how badly mauled you become.

Of course I care. That’s why I wouldn’t do something like that. (Well, it’s one of the reasons anyway.)

The point I was trying to make with that hypothetical is that yes, Ann provoked a predictable reaction with her comment, but the reaction, in this case, is appropriate. She should not have said that. She was wrong to do so, and the people calling her on it are in the right.

  27. lonetown says:

I prefer Breck girl or She who must be obeyed (that may be someone else) but faggot will do in a pinch.  There is also homo and queer bastard.

To me it has nothing to do with his sexuality, its just a way a registering my contempt for “him”.

Maybe I should stick with evil cunt (again that may be someone else).

  28. BornRed says:

the people calling her on it are in the right

Joe – from what I’ve seen, the people calling her on it are ON the right, as well.  I don’t mind Miss Coulter stirring the pot, I just think she could have done better, having seen her stinger displayed in the past.

TW: physical77 = a hint to get back to the strumpets?

  29. mel says:

“To me it has nothing to do with his sexuality, its

just a way a registering my contempt for “him”.”

In a way that refers to sexuality. Of him. And of gay people too.

  30. cfoster says:

A commenter on another blog asserts Ann was making reference to a recent Grey’s Anatomy episode in which a character was required to enter treatment for calling a co-worker faggot. I wonder if a similar pop culture reference would have her calling Obama a n, if she would do it. On the one hand, she would know it would damage her side. On the other, it would get her lots of attention.

  31. commander0 says:

But Edwards is a faggot.  Otherwise known as a mincer.  Or nancy boy.  He IS effeminate in demeanor.  What’s the big whoop?

“moral76” No it has fuck all to do with morality.

faggot faggot faggot faggot nigger nigger nigger nigger kike kike kike kike blah blah blah.  A word has only as much power over the listener as the listener grants it.  CHOOSE VICTIMHOOD as a slogan is not exactly inspiring.  That being said, Coulter is equally as ambitious and self absorbed as Hilary.  They can now both go fuck off.  Together if they wish, in a kind of octopus embrace.  Just don’t send me any video.

  32. minorripper says:

great post–thanks…don’t know if you’ve seen this video of Ann Coulter, but it’s pretty classic:

    http://minor-ripper.blogspot.com/2006/12/ann-coulter-gets-owned.html

  33. Throckmorton Fudgepacker says:

I find it offensive to make fun of someones name.  There was a guy in my class named Bob Gay.  Boy did we josh him good, because, he wasn’t really that happy.

  34. Dana says:

    O! What are you seeking,

    And where are you making?

    The faggots are reeking,

    The bannocks are baking!

    O! tril-lil-lil-lolly

    the valley is jolly,

    ha! ha!

    I denounce J R R Tolkien!

Every side has its clowns; Ann Coulter happens to be ours.  At least she’s better looking than Michael Moore.

  35. Dana says:

    McGehee wrote:

Everyone knows “metrosexual” means the same thing.

Now, see, that’s an insult with class!

  36. BJTexs says:

    Phelps?

Frankly I didn’t associate that in any way at all.  Not everyone is an Evangelical so there isn’t a direct connection.  I myself am an Animist so the issue of religion doesn’t apply.

Upon reflection, I overplayed that particular connection. It’s not about Phelps per se, although as a Christian I’m profoundly embarrassed and outraged by those hate mongering, sanctimonious blow hards. Christians, like conservatives, tend to get broad brushed on a regular basis and I’d rather not give the Marcottes and Olbermans of the world any more ammunition. I just hate that word, which is reflective of my own particular mindset.

I’ve come to the realization that it is about Coulter and her insatiable need for attention. It just wasn’t very clever and now she is the issue rather than, well, the issues!

    Agreed.

I myself am an Animist so the issue of religion doesn’t apply.

You worship Anime? grin (I kid!)

  37. mojo says:

She called him a piece of firewood?

    That’s just disgusting, man…
