Interesting note on the Haley nomination. According to IMDB, Jackie Earle’s role in LITTLE CHILDREN was his 1st acting gig since 1993. Nice way to get back into the acting game, eh?
Believe it or not, I’ve never actually seen Bad News Bears, so I had to go look to see who this Kelly Leak fellow was. Never made it through Ulysses, either, just to show what an uncultured swine I am.
I looked at Ulysses a few weeks ago, embarrassed by the knowledge that it was on my “not read” list. I read a few pages, and decided it would have to remain on that list for a while longer.
Well, IMHO. it is the type of book for which book clubs SHOULD exist. Instead, book clubs usually pick books I have little interest in reading, and certainly need no help in interpreting.
Look: Learning Russian and then reading almost anything by Tolstoy or Dostoyevsky, or learning Italian and reading Dante, etc., is worth it. Reading Ulysses, even if you are a native speaker of English, is not. Believe me, because I read the whole damn thing. Not for school, on my own. I thought it had to get better. It does not.
I’m sorry the Jesuits and vile Ireland screwed you up, James. That doesn’t mean you have a right to take it out on the rest of us.
I loved Ulysses. I too took it as a project, but I read a lot of commentary and explication. Reading that book made visiting Dublin a very… resonating experience.
He’s better looking than some quality women who share his name.

I thought he was great in Breaking Away. One of my faves, that is.
Mine too. But, well, he’ll always be Kelly Leak to me.

My brother read it, and he says he took it as a project. To prepare for reading it, he read the works of Ibsen, Chekhov and probably a few others.
I lack that kind of patience and dedication. I tend to be the easy-gratification sort of reader.
How many times do I have to repeat this? Instant gratification is just not fast enough for me. I am a BOOMER!

Hmm. Interesting timing. I just got back from the mall, and was browsing the bookstore shelves. I pulled down Little Children completely randomly.
Is it good?
Ulysses. That’s one of many reasons they invented Cliff’s Notes.
I like to read, but 5 books by one author followed by a ten page term paper on a manual typewriter is punishment.
I still hate Hemingway, and he was my choice from a list of authors…
