Illuminating? [Dan Collins]

From Glenn Reynolds:

MORE ON COMPACT FLUORESCENT LIGHT: Megan McArdle doesn’t like it: “The problem is that after five minutes of sitting under a compact flourescent bulb, I feel like an extra in a Fellini film. I use one in the range hood, and if I had closet lights, I’d install them there. But there’s no way I’m using them as my primary form of illumination unless legally forced to do so; it’s just too murderously depressing.”

I put one in my study; it sucks. I put a different brand in Helen’s study—looks great. Put a third brand downstairs—it sucks even more than the one in my study. I’m told that the quality of light issue is a lot less when it’s in a lamp with a shade than when it’s in an overhead fixture. Still experimenting. . . .

Now, I don’t want to be as creepy as Ace about pointing out that Helen’s hot, but could Glenn’s impression have anything to do with what the various bulbs were illuminating?  Just, you know, for argument’s sake?  And who doesn’t feel like an extra in a Fellini film most of the time, Megan?  Huh?  Suck it up.

I don’t know.  What stuff would you like to see Reynolds review that he probably hasn’t already?

A little light posting this morning, eh Dan?

    By the way.

    TCW–

I might have posted more, but I can’t log in.  They’re migrating after this latest DoS attack.

Oh, geez.  Took a while to detonate.

I decided to try a couple.  They’re OK, but I’m pretty skeptical that they’re the equivalent of 60w incandescents as the package says.

I get complaints about using them in my garage:

“They’re too dim and they take too long to start up when it’s cold.”

    Tough.

My car doesn’t get parked in the garage.  Yours does.  Any light is better than no light.

The lights are so high up I need a ladder to reach them.  You’d need a longer ladder.  And unbroken bulbs, you know, like the last box was before you dropped it.

How would you know how long they take to start up?  It’s not like you ever turned them off.

OK, I didn’t say it, but I thought it.

Yes, I am cheap and resent giving my money to the electric company.

No, I don’t care about global warming.  Let me rephrase that.  I’m in favor of global warming.  This is Syracuse, NY and it’s in the fifties in January.  Let it snow – somewhere else.

  7. I use the “full spectrum” aka “craft light” ones, love em.  though I goofed and bought a normal one a few weeks ago and yes, it was depressing. figured it was just because I was used to the blinding bluish white version. YMMV.

An important fact about compact fluorescents that I didn’t discover until I’d replaced all the bulbs in my recessed fixtures with nice expensive CFLs: they don’t dim well, if at all. Using a dimmer with them makes them burn out super-fast. Quality of light notwithstanding.
