Suspect in PlayStation 3 robbery killed
A teenager accused of robbing a student of two new Playstation 3s on the day the popular game consoles were introduced was shot to death by police sent to arrest him.
Peyton Strickland, 18, was killed Friday at a house he shared with three roommates, New Hanover County Sheriff Sid Causey said.
“If this boy would’ve come to the door, opened the door, we probably wouldn’t be talking,” the sheriff said Sunday.
Roommate Mike Rhoton said Strickland was unarmed, but may have been holding a video game controller when he went to the door as it was bashed in by officers.
The police so jumpy that they are unapologetically gunning down teens holding video game controllers. For gods sake the kid probably didnt come to the door right away because he has to ‘pause his game.’
Its getting harder and harder to argue that the militarization of the police isn’t getting out of hand
He probably didn’t come to the door because he had the volume cranked. I expect his parents will be able to afford lots of PS3s by the time this is litigated. I also imagine that the guy who was robbed won’t find much satisfaction in getting the stuff back.
OMG. That government guy is totally lying.
The kid should be shot for wanting a PS3.
MMS–
Moot.
Maybe they thought he was holding a phaser…
This is one of those stories that requires clarification (note that they shot the kid’s dog, too.)
If it happened the way it is described the parents of the kid will get a multi-million dollar settlement from the city, or county, or state, and the cops who killed the kid (and the dog) will lose their jobs. That’s all.
Maybe they will be able to get jobs as bodyguards for OJ.
Hate to be so callous, but F the guy. I mean at first he thought it was ok to beat down someone for his property right. Next step he would have shot before beating a victim. No remorse I don’t feel a bit sympathetic…Merry Christmas….
Okay, let’s make that our general maxim: people who take other people’s stuff should be shot on sight. That would make it a whole lot easier to maintain order.
Yeah, that is exactly what I meant…..Please….
Hear, hear! Best damn thing I’ve heard all day.
Okay…and your point is…what?
And, by the way, what was the excuse for murdering the dog?
“First they shot the kid who stole PS3’s, and I didn’t care, because, hey, I never stole one; then they shot the dog, and, shit, so what, I’m not a dog …..”
You guys aren’t serious. Deadly force is serious.
Here in Atlanta the police recently shot and killed a 92-year-old woman in a no-knock, plainsclothes drug raid. “Funny” thing is, she was armed, and wounded three of them first.
So we have it on the (alleged) felon’s roommate’s authority that the jack-booted thugs kicked in the door and shot him in cold blood.
Good enough for me; let’s skip the investigation and just start writing checks.
Sanity: No knock raids are stupid for precisely that reason. It’s a serious matter to barge into a person’s home.
that the jack-booted thugs kicked in the door and shot him in cold blood.
I said at the outset that this issue required clarification. However, everyone who is endorsing the shooting of the thief (and the dog) are assuming that it went down as the roommate said.
“Sanity: No knock raids are stupid for precisely that reason. It’s a serious matter to barge into a person’s home. “
True,
But if your not guilty of a crime you won’t have a hand sitting in your lap…waiting for such an intrusion….
HAND GUN
They admit that he was unarmed. What part of barging into a house an shooting unarmed occupants are you okay with? Is there a way other than “in cold blood” to shoot a guy while he’s playing video games?
ignoring the whole “cops-shooting-an-unarmed-kid” thing just for a MOMENT
This kid beat the hell out of someone else, to steal 3 fucking video games?? ANd then his FATHER is quoted as saying his son was just “coming into his own”??
Parents really suck nowadays. Seriously.
TW: Would have loved to have seen that trial.
If the little gangsta hadn’t strongarmed somebody for their stuff the police wouldn’t have been at his house.
Stupid people die in stupid ways
Putting execution before arrest and trial is a little cart before the horse, dontcha think? How do you know he did anything?
It used to be that we had due process, trials, finders of fact, a jury of one’s peers, innocence until guilt was proven….
Not enough facts yet to really speculate on what went down.
But from reading the story posted… some conflicting things…
Cops say ‘armed robbery’ but story says they beat the man and took his stuff.
The cops are doing a bash and crash, but it is not clear why they felt the need to use the tactic, rather than a normal knockup (nervously I am sure).
I will say this though:
You got to be one dumb crook to steal something, then take it to your known whereabouts, and NOT FENCE THE GOODS as quickly as possible.
You will if you live in a high-crime drug-infested rat’s nest, like she apparently.
North Carolina. If the initial robbery victim had been armed, little Mr. DeadOnArrival would have been shot there and then, with no legal intervention against the robbery victim.
Mr. DOA was lucky during the robbery, and unlucky during the attempted arrest. This kid was a turd, and despite what his father says, there is no clean end on a turd.
Shame about the dog.
Everyone seems to missing the key element here. They shot the Dog! Why…….there has to be a good reason as to why they felt compelled to shot the dog.
Was it an accidental dog-caught-in-the-crossfire kind of thing? Could be the cops woke up that day and just said “hey, I am going to bust a door down and kill someone today……and if I play my cards right, I might get to shot a dog to”.
Or could it be that the kind of kid that would serve up a king sized ass whopping for roughly $1300 might be the kind of kid that was involved with other questionable activities. Maybe drugs??? Maybe gangs??? Could it be possible that a kid like that would feel compelled to train his dog to protect him. Could it be that the officers were forced to shoot the dog? Could it be possible that the kid gave the dog verbal commands to attack the officers. In many states that warrents self-defence if you go after the person giving the commands to the animal.
All of this is highly unlikely though. More than likely, these officers just decided as a group to just go ape shit crazy that day. They all collectivly decided to throw away thier carrers, their reputations and their freedom for the simple pleasure of kicking down a door and mowing down a street thug in a hail of gleefull gunfire. Then for the icing on the cake they got to shoot the kids dog. “God damn that felt good, whoa!!!!” they yell in harmony. Yea, I bet that’s what happend.
P.S And for steve who takes things too literally thats what we call sarcasm in America.
I agree with Pablo. It’s a bit premature to talk about clean ends on turds and the like when we don’t even know the kid committed the robbery. We have due process and jury trials for a reason, and, if the facts are as stated, I sincerely hope these cops never wear a uniform again.
Eerst Europa Doelstellingen: De Ci2i Verzekering (Ci2i) zal het nummer een gebrandmerkte pan Europese commoditized online verzekeringsmakelaar door 2010 zijn.
Ok, so if you’ve got a protective, territorial dog, you’d better train it to recognize cops or when they kick your front door in, you’re a goner.
Uh huh.
What are the odds that an 18 year old is going to kill cops over an assault and a couple of Playstations? Why didn’t they knock on the fucking door and/or stake the place out and wait for the subject to exit?
As a practical matter, whether the kid stole anything won’t be relevant to the investigation. The actions of the cop will be compared to department policy, and if he passes that test he won’t be disciplined.
A lawsuit is a different matter, but I think if the department supports the cop’s actions he’ll probably be free and clear there, too. The department would be the target of anyone looking for deep pockets anyway.
John: For a group of cops in SWAT gear to be unable to take down a German Shepherd without shooting it is pathetic. They probably peed their pants when they saw the dog. You,and the rest, who want to to celebrate and gloat over the shooting of a teenager, and the shooting of a dog, be my guest. They’re your words, not mine.
Oh, by the way, if you follow the news you will see that the sheriff refuses to identify the deputies who carried out the killings because they are afraid for their personal safety. LOL!
Again, IF it went down as described …..
The cops involved will probably have to leave the area, especially now that they have to hide.
It is very hard to discipline cops unless you can establish malice, that’s good, in many ways, but unfortunate if you want justice.
The department will be sued, it will bounce back to the City, which will be sued, and the plaintiffs will win. The victim was white, and his father is a lawyer. So racist attitudes will not be in play (unless, the shooters were non-white). I expect a settlement of $8 M to $10 M. Not bad for son.
steve- your way off base as usual. I was making the point that we do not know what happened yet so everyone is assuming. BTW most swat teams will shoot the dog first if it poses a threat as most criminals who use dogs will use them as a diversion in a situation like that. You need to find out about SWAT protocal before you show your ignorance. You are also assuming that I am happy about any of this, which makes you an even bigger ass, steve in DC. I for one really dont give a shit until I find out what really happened but I find my theory way more believable then the one you support which is blood thirsty cops.
I didn’t say the cops were “bloodthirsty.” I do think they panicked and used an inappropriate amount of deadly force (speaking as someone who was trained in the use of deadly force and carried a 45 on my hip for the better part of 3 years.) I also think those cops in NYC who fired 51 shots at the groom panicked,as well as the guys who shot Amidou Dialou (or whatever his name was.) Cops are not bad people but they do screw up from time to time. And there are simply too many cases of excessive use of deadly force these days. I’m not sure why. BTW, further, my grandfather was a cop and so was my brother in law: the latter had to resign the force after losing his composure and killing a fare beater, not on purpose. Such things happen. These cops are done, regardless. They won’t go to jail, but they’re done. Unless there are massive mitigating factors that we don’t yet know about, there’s no excuse for killing an unarmed college student on the allegation that he stole $1,300 worth of toys.
Here’s a link for those who approve the killings:
here
I don’t consider it mitigating, but, I am fair.
Chauncey Gardener?
“All will be well… in the garden.”
“Dynamic” entry: Rule 1
Shoot the damn dog.
Yes, indeed, Chauncey Gardener!
I have a hard time believing alot of what you say steve. As someone who has served in a MP position as well as civilian police, I dont believe you ever carried a gun for a living. I also do not believe that anyone in your family was a cop. I think you are just using that to add some weight to what you say. Common behavior for a troll. I am just not buyin it.

Well, I did carry a .45 for close to three years, as well as 3 foot long fiber glass stick on my left hip. And my grandfather was a cop, and so was my brother in law.
Meanwhile, the DA announced today (12 Dec) that one of the cops was indicted for second degree murder in the slaying of this kid, and other news reports indicate this deputy shot the kid twice through the door. Of course, the university/state is still going to lose the civil suit. In fact, this indictment virtually guarantees that.
Your apologies are accepted in advance.
PS: I find it hard to believe you were ever an MP, unless by that you mean “Member of Parliament”, and I find it hard to believe you were ever a civilian cop, either. So there.
