Okay, I know that they’re trying to preserve it as a monument, but isnt’ there a better word than “renovate”? It makes my flesh creep.

I dunno. “Preserve”, “rehabilitate”, and “spiff up” aren’t much better.
Face it: it needs a lot of yard work. The grass hasn’t been cut in decades.
