Teenage Fanclub [Dan Collins]

A few months ago, I dusted off the old Rickenbacher and started noodling and then playing, after 10 years.

Lately, I’ve been spending evenings with Brendan and his musical pals, now that he’s gotten over his rap phase, and I’ve turned them all onto Teenage Fanclub.  Sometimes I make my comments and posts between songs.  I’ve been able to turn them onto this kind of music, with its multiple references to the Byrds, the Beach Boys, and other classic rock bands, and with their strong Waldorf training in vocals, it’s been a blast.  If you don’t own the Teenage Fanclub album, Four Thousand Seven Hundred and Sixty Seconds, go buy it.  Even the drummer, Cal, is starting to get it.

Oh, and also stuff from The Judybats’ great third album, Pain Makes You Beautiful.  I think Reynolds is a fan of the offshoot, Opposable Thumbs.

I wanna talk about the Big fat Greek wonderous Technicolor Trenchcoat Cosmic MANDATE of the Dems….Not some Pro-Midi thump/hop 60’s/70’s tracks, even though mine is an LS-150 original Gibson Blonde Full body Orchastra model from 1951, with the Birdland Gold kit, wall to wall inlaid pearl, and three suuuuweeeet pickups, and I eat that stuff up and…and….and

Still a big fan of Bandwagonesque, myself.  A fun band live, also, iirc.

“Strong Waldorf training in vocals”?  Wow, I didn’t expect to see those words on this blog.

Never got into Teenage Fanclub, but my children are getting a Waldorf education.  I don’t know if we’ll start a band when they get older, but I hope to be able to turn them on to Pulp, Ultra Vivid Scene, XTC, The Clash, and (when Mom’s not around) the Butthole Surfers.  And so much more.

Right now, they’re big fans of the Who and Kinks.  Poor twisted souls.

I’m amused by this. Fifteen years ago, the 30-something hipsters were trying to turn me on to Big Star. Now it’s our turn with TFC.

So who’s the Big Star of the next generation?

(IMO, Bandwagonesque sounded great at the time, but not so much now)

I agree that Bandwagonesque (outside of “Alcoholiday” and “The Concept”) hasn’t aged very well since its release.  But Songs from Northern Britain and Grand Prix (who can resist the line “I’d steal a car/to drive you home”?) are still great listens.
