See this for a fine example.

Major John–might be evidence of uncaring commenters, but I checked it out.  Thanks for that.  Maybe we can work up some kind of PW gift package.

  2. MayBee says:

    Major John-

What kind of clothing do they need?

  3. Major John says:

Any and all, MayBee – particularly kids stuff.

  4. Mikey NTH says:

Major – I lied.  I set the links tonight.  Carpe Diem, and all that.

    Semper Paratus, sir.

  5. Dan Collins says:

MayBee, what’s your plan?  Happy to help out.

  6. Dan Collins says:

    Major John–

If we get stuff to you, can you get it distributed?

  7. Major John says:

Easier to send it straight to the address in my post – e-mail me and I’ll give you the name of the person to fill in at the top of the address.

  8. MayBee says:

No plan really, Dan Collins.  I just have a bunch of clothes my kids have grown out of, but my problem is shipping.  I’ve got to think about how to help more.

Maybee—pick up some ”flat rate” priority mail boxes at the Post Office.  They’re free, and you can mail what ever you can stuff in them, so long as the box doesn’t bulge or weigh over 70 pounds, for $8.10 each.

This is what I use when I mail a care package.  Works out OK in the long run.

BTW, MayBee, just in case you don’t understand the Army Post Office (APO) system [some folks don’t], you can ship this stuff domestically in the mail.  Any overseas transport is handled by the APO.

You will have to fill out a customs declaration form for each package, but your post office can help you with that.

  11. yes, and don’t bother with insurance or any extras like that because once it leaves the continental U.S. all bets are off (USPS will not cover it).  or so I’ve been told.  I send most things parcel post (occasionally priority if it’s not much more expensive) and i haven’t had any problems yet.  things have been getting there in seven to ten days this time around. last time (a couple years ago) it took things a month or more.

  12. MayBee says:

Thanks Real_JeffS.  My biggest problem with shipping is that I live inJapan (and don’t speak enough Japanese to schedule a shipping pick-up).  Not to mention shipping costs.  Not that I should be overly concerned with that.

I do remember one of the nearby American bases had a clothing drive recently, either through my kid’s school or through the American Club.  I’m going to look into that.

Hmmmmm……yes, a real problem, MayBee.  I’m guessing that you aren’t a military dependent, then.  Know any US military?  They may ship it for you, through the APO system.  The costs are the same as stateside throughout the world.

Or, as you say, they could accept your donations.

    Otherwise, I’m stonkered.

all bets are off (USPS will not cover it).  or so I’ve been told.

Theoretically, no.  I insured packages sent from Kuwait through the APO.  What’s not worth the cost is express mail (ain’t gonna happen) and delivery confirmation.
