Here’s tonight’s slate of musical moments from YouTube, as gathered from my regular web gig at Claude Pate:
Fatboy Slim turned a sample of Sly & the Family Stone into his “Weapon of Choice,” directed by the acclaimed Spike Jonze and starring the even more-acclaimed Christopher Walken.
But wait, there’s more…
The Housemartins is where Norman Cook (a/k/a Fatboy Slim) got his start, as the bass player. “Happy Hour” sounds much happier than it really is, with the boys doing a nice imitation of Monty Python’s Upper-Class Twits.
Blue Oyster Cult: If you go behind the music of “Don’t Fear the Reaper,” you will find that legendary record producer Jim Dickinson looks very much like Christopher Walken. And that he has a fever.
Sam Cooke does a passable job with “Everybody Loves to Cha Cha Cha,” until Jackie Wilson shows up, at which point it all sort of collapses.
Rosario Dawson steals a movie during an unexpected musical moment in this bootleg clip from Clerks 2.
Warning: It’s a Kevin Smith movie, so there will be vulgar, profane humor.
Warning: There is a plot spoiler at the end of the clip. But this scene is probably the main reason to see the movie, anyway.
Prior entries in the series: Parts One, Two, Three, Four, Five and Five-point-five.
For Chrisakes where is witheld?, Or when the fuck is that Finklestein…shit..kid going to assume control of this blog again…or is it the goldfinger kid…ah shit, when’s the jew boy comming back?
I don’t believe it! I was just about to post that Christopher Walken video myself! I was going to group it with Robbie Williams’ “Rock DJ” and Billy Corgan’s “Tonight Tonight”, under the heading of videos that are more interesting to watch with the sound turned off.
Guess I’ll stick with quickies.
Considering “the jew boy” was two posts down the page, do you think Boss429 might have been a little hasty?
Sorry you appear to have taken it personally Karl. Are you saying your above the talent around here?
And speaking of Christopher Walken look-a-likes in music videos, Tim Bogert bore a resemblance, early on.
Thanks Karl! I love that Fatboy Slim video, hadn’t seen it in a long time.
No, merely observing that you left the comment asking when JG is coming back, when he had a post on the page. Presumably, you would not have left such a comment here had you noticed it, hence the characterization as “hasty.” Of course, I would have thought that you would have asked the question there, once I pointed it out to you, but I would have been wrong about that.
You’re welcome, Mark! Thanks for commenting.
Don’t forget that Norman was the man behind dance-techno Beats International, which had a UK #1 with “Dub Be Good To Me” a couple years after the Housemartins broke up.
Anywho, thanks for the Housemartins post—one of the All-Time Broke Up Way Before Their Time bands. For a band that made two good and good-selling records, their line-up was constantly changing, which was odd (and a warning sign). A couple years after the split, singer/songwriter PD Heaton and the third drummer emerged with the huge-selling Beautiful South. It took Cook a decade to become Fat Boy.
Also, Fat Boy Slim gets some credit for laying the groundwork for the huge music scene that has emerged in his hometown of Brighton in Sussex. Let’s see, off the top of my head—Kooks, Pipettes, Upper Room, Brakes, Maccabees, GO! Team…there’s probably a couple more…all newish bands from the last couple years who are definitely worth checking out.
Also, props to Cook for being a good citizen. He supports the same football team as I do, so I know that he was instrumental in raising funds to get the Brighton Seagulls the new stadium which will save the team. So he’s got that good karma going for him.
I’ve blogged the Pipettes often at Pate, as well as the GO! Team (very fun live) and, iirc, the Kooks, whose album finally got a US release this month.
BTW, here’s an 11 minute documentary on the GO! Team.
Great. Now I’ve got “you can go with this, or you go with that” stuck in my head. Thanks a whole bunch, Karl.
That’s it. The election is settled.
