Yvonne Ridley: “How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Veil” [Dan Collins]

Well, normally I’d be in perfect agreement with Prodi and Reid, but I think she deserves an exemption from this rule.

A more striking example of special pleading I’ve seldom seen in my life.  To give you a taste, I’ll just quote the beginning of the article:

I used to look at veiled women as quiet, oppressed creatures—until I was captured by the Taliban.

I’m kind of speechless after that, but maybe you can find something to say.

And for those who are still trying to claim that Islam oppresses women, recall this 1992 statement from the Rev. Pat Robertson, offering his views on empowered women: Feminism is a “socialist, anti-family political movement that encourages women to leave their husbands, kill their children, practice witchcraft, destroy capitalism and become lesbians.”

Fucking Pat Robertson, this was such a wonderful country before he appointed himself Dictator for Life.

  2. ahem says:

What are you doing, Collins? Working up my blood pressure? I already wrote the WaPo a dirty letter this morning about this deluded sow. At birth, both Ridley and Galloway should have been tied in a sack and dropped into the river.

  3. Dan Collins says:

    B Moe–

You know, I really feel ashamed that I swallowed all that agitprop about the Taliban preventing girls from going to schools.

  4. Big Bang hunter says:

    – Casebook Stockholm syndrome. Hopefully she also got her foundest sexual fantasies fullfilled, so it was all a win win.

  5. Dan Collins says:

    ahem,

Perhaps you’d feel better if you shared the letter here?

  6. monkyboy says:

When confronted with information that counters your beliefs…just ignore it.

That’s the true path to wisdom.

  7. Dan Collins says:

What mountaintop cave do you live in, mb?

  8. Big Bang hunter says:

“When confronted with information that counters your beliefs…just ignore it.”

    – Your side already has that technique down pat. Why copy you?

  9. McGehee says:

Executing women for learning to read isn’t bad—it’s just different!

    </monkyboy>

  10. boys…boys…. are we REALLY that bored?  hmmmm?  okay, yeah, me too.

    who’s ignoring what?  ridiculing, maybe.

  11. mishu says:

If a man does raise a finger against his wife, he is not allowed to leave a mark on her body, which is the Koran’s way of saying, “Don’t beat your wife, stupid.”

No, it means, “If you’re going to beat your wife, don’t leave a mark. Haven’t you watched CSI?”

  12. RiverCocytus says:

Pat Robertson consistently shows his misunderstanding of the essential Christian message and idea. More or less, he, like the left end of the Christospectrum, would use any means possible to defend his sacred cow, which in this case, is Christian Traditions. Most of which are not Christian. So he can rage and strive all he wants, but it will avail nothing.

As for this veil nonsense, its definitely a case of whole-grain stockholm. Interesting how she takes the Koran out of context to defend her feeling that the Taliban is actually O.K.

  13. TheGeezer says:

Women in Islam are considered equal to men in spirituality, education and worth, and a woman’s gift for childbirth and child-rearing is regarded as a positive attribute.

Try telling that to your local friendly feminist.  Like maybe ten children is the way it should be (only very devout Muslims and very traditionally devout Catholics won’t try to hit you after hearing that remark).

  14. TheGeezer says:

I’m no fan of Robertson, but have you read any contemporary feminist stuff?  Lots of wicca, lots of lesbianism, lots of pro-abortion stuff, lots of leftist economics, the traditional family structure is detested, and let us not forget “A woman needs a man like a fish needs a bicycle.” That makes Robertson’s assessment spot on for what, six out of seven?

  15. Captain Ed does a pretty good job of tearing that flakebag Ridley apart…

    tw: hes72.  No, he ain’t…

  16. The Fabulous Timbo says:

Ridley’s case just proves the point that Islam sucks the brains out its women, and leaves them as future mujadeen baby-makers.

So many idiots in this world. I’m definitely feeling like a genius lately.

  17. The Fabulous Timbo says:

    And one more thing…SHE’S UGLY.

But that veil is nice. For underwear.

  18. Darleen says:

Oh goody. Now we have Islamo-feminists to contend with.

Notice she lives in England, not Iran.

  19. syn says:

I don’t believe iconic Western feminists like Maureen Dowd are going to spend hundreds of thousands a year on cosmetic surgery trying to maintain that sweet 16 old look just to prove they are as intellectually enlightened as is Yvonne Ridley.

However, from my 30 years of living Ms. Betty’s ‘beware the evil patriarchy parasite oppressive pregnancy otherwise you’ll end up barefoot slaving in the kitchen cooking up Slop for The Man never to have orgasm again’ feminist indoctrination I must admit that Pat Robertson comment isn’t too far off the mark.  Not sure about the witchcraft though.

I sure am glad I came to my senses before I ended up as smart as Ridley because I don’t dig that Burkawear at all.  At 5’11 I think I’d stand out enough to look like a giant blue dildo or something.

  20. 6Gun says:

That makes Robertson’s assessment spot on for what, six out of seven?

As you say, considering the utterly Marxist contemporary Western “feminist” movement, precisely right.  Pat just threw enough darts blindfolded is all.

(We need Darleen to host a big noisy bruhaha about the topic while Jeff’s distracted.)

BTW, Yvonne, love that camel-hoof-on-the-chin thing you got going on there.

tw: freedom86.  ‘86 was twenty years ago, gals.  You were wise, you were invincible.

  21. Darleen says:

    6Gun

    workin’ on it

    wink

  22. B Moe says:

I’m no fan of Robertson, but have you read any contemporary feminist stuff?

I was responding to the notion that Robertson and his opinions are comparable to the Taliban, since the Taliban had absolute control of their country and Robertson doesn’t. At all.  In fact even if his opinions are true, the fact that they are his opinions is detrimental to their acceptance in mainstream political thought.

  23. ThePolsihNizel says:

I know what I’d say to that nut.  Shut the fuck up and get to steppin with your bullshit in Saudi Arabia if Islam is so compatible with, oh I don’t know, women’s rights.  What a complete fucking idiot.  The fact that monkeyboy comments in the affirmative with Ridley cements it all quite nicely.  No one, and I do mean NO ONE, is stopping Ridley or monkeyboy from moving to Iran or Saudi Arabia.  Or are they?  Cowards.

  24. lunarpuff says:

everything that Western feminists fought for in the 1970s was available to Muslim women 1,400 years ago.

But what do they have now?

  25. monkyboy says:

When confronted with information that counters your beliefs…just get angry.

An even truer path to wisdom.

  26. B Moe says:

No one, and I do mean NO ONE, is stopping Ridley or monkeyboy from moving to Iran or Saudi Arabia.

monkyboy is saving up for a ride on that slow boat to China, on account of that amazing economy of theirs.

  27. B Moe says:

So what should I do when confronted with information that counters the obvious, oh simian of wisdom?

  28. lunarpuff says:

And don’t forget to visist the panda reserve, monky. I hear you can feed them.

  29. lunarpuff says:

A good simian would pick their nose and fling poo.

  30. Big Bang hunter says:

    – monkeyshit is here to try to mount a condescening precipice, sit on his brain, and aggrivate. It’s a shame he doesn’t realize he’s the instrument of his own demise. That sort of activity will get you an ulcer faster than anything else he could do. On second thought, it’s not a shame.

  31. When confronted with information that counters your beliefs…just get angry snarky.

  32. I just wish she loved the veil enough to actually PUT THE FKIN THING ON.

Wow, that’s a face for a veil if I EVER saw one.

No wonder the Taliban forced her to wear one.

And to think I used to wonder what was under those burka’s. Blech.

  33. Big Bang hunter says:

    – as some of the regulars have mentioned he/she/it has been driven off other blogsites, due to his antics. It’s how some get their jollies, pissing people off. sometimes that’s the whole point. they don’t have any real interest in the obnoxious, antagonistic, backward things they post. It’s just to get a rise out of others. Many times its compensation for impotence, or some other social shortcoming, like a hopelessly ugly contenence. He reacts to my sissyboy observations of his effemenate postings with silence, so it’s peobably impotence. Maybe both. Ugly and impotent.

    – Ignoring it is the best course of action.

  34. RiverCocytus says:

monkyboy doesn’t get that people react to HIM and not what he’s saying. After you gainsay what people say about 100 times, they stop caring what you have to say.

As for Robertson, my ish with him is, he paints with extremely broad strokes. Granted, its part of his rhetorical style, but I think that’s the problem.

As for radical feminism, it is fairly spot-on. If you take ‘feminism’ to mean what is espoused by people who call themselves ‘feminists’ nowadays, yeah– its an ideology based entirely around the supremacy of the female. It can’t be anything but false. ;P (By which I mean, it is such a narrow philosophy that it is actually more like a pathology.)

Robertson needs to cool his collar. Sometimes, it makes me glad I’m not a public figure. Never want to be– make too much of a fool of myself.

    TW: Probably would, sucka!

    Hey. Nobody asked you.

  35. ed says:

    Hmmm.

Well I used to look at computer nerds, endlessly playing on their XBoxes and Playstations, as harmless fools.  At least until I was captured by Amazonian Princesses.

    I mean Naked Amazonian Princesses!

Ooops.  Sorry.  I meant *Amorous* Naked Amazonian Princesses.

And note that I was captured all unwilling like.  Well not entirely unwilling, mostly unwilling though.  Hey I had a good run on XBox Live in MechAssault II dude and they interrupted it!

    Ahhh.  Gotta go.

  36. B Moe says:

Here is a companion piece also from the WaPo, monkyboy.  How do you react when confronted with this information?

  37. ThePolishNizel says:

Monkyboy…Neither you nor ms. ridley make me angry, so save your masterbatory fantasies for your psychatrist or your mother.  You’re just not that clever.  The point is clear.  Ridley is a coward that lives in a protected society.  You are a coward that lives in a protected society.  Live in a more “true” Islamic society and then report back on your freedoms.  Please do.  I have commented in the past that you are just NOT worthy to troll this blog.  The simple fact is you’re not.  You’re just not that witty, intelligent or adult enough.

  38. When confronted with information that counters your beliefs…just get angry.

When defending the idefensible…just change the subject.

I don’t know about wisdom, but it’s the path to something I’m sure.

    yours/

    peter.

  39. BJTexs says:

I met with a missionary to Afganistan in early 2002. He had been “in country” doing what he referreed to as “service outreach.” They were helping Afgan farmers in the country build irrigation systems to increase their crop yeilds and overall access to clean water. He was certainly not an idealistic, clueless evangelist.

He told me that he once asked a Taliban official to explain this conundrum: An Afgan woman is forbidden to see a male doctor, Afgan women are forbidden to be educated, so how do Afgan women get medical care? The official response. “We’ll work on that.”

    This woman needs psychological help.

  40. The Fabulous Timbo says:

“…Islamic historians agree that the prophet Muhammad never hit a woman…”

That may be the only thing Mohammed never did to a woman.

  41. The Fabulous Timbo says:

Well, now I went and did it. I’m going to have a fatwa on my ass in no time.

  42. B Moe says:

“…Islamic historians agree that the prophet Muhammad never hit a woman…”

That may be the only thing Mohammed never did to a woman.

They may also be the only thing “Islamic historians” agree about.

  43. Lost Dog says:

    D-E-L-U-D-E-D, EH?

  44. ThePolishNizel says:

“…Islamic historians agree that the prophet Muhammad never hit a woman…”

LOL…All prisoners agree.  None of them have ever committed a crime.

    tw: hit

    I s”hit” you not.

  45. Mikey NTH says:

“Leftist Hag Ditches Failed Totalitarian Belief System, Hitches on to Up-And-Comer in Continuing Hatred of the West.  Film at 11.”

  46. Major John says:

Maybe monky’s experience in an Islamic society was different than mine – how was it, monky, as far as women went?

  47. BJTexs says:

Well, Major john, you never know how much P&I (POINTLESS & IRRITATING) may ahve had experience with muslim woman in Afganistan. I mean, after all, you only had about 70 patrols and what, about a year in country? Perhaps P&I know more than you.

    OR…………he is full of crap!

    I pick #2!

BTW: I’m having trouble getting to the unhappy pastry site. What Up?

  48. BJTexs says:

And, especially among converts to the faith like me, the attention of men who confront women with inappropriate, leering behavior is not tolerable.

So let’s reconcile the abobe phrase from Ridley with the picture above.

    Waiting…

  49. Major John says:

BJ – Blogspot occassionally sucks like a black hole.

Being the S-5, I had a lot more contact with regular folks than just on patrols…quite an education it ‘twere.  But I am keen to see if monky had different experiences than I did with Islamic society.
