THURSDAY, Oct. 5 (HealthDay News)—Civil society may hinge on a tiny piece of tissue at the front of the human brain, a new study suggests.ADVERTISEMENT
Experiments involving a “fairness” game show that the right side of this region—called the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex—helps people suppress selfish urges in obviously unjust situations, even at their own expense.
When researchers used a mild electric current to temporarily short-circuit this area, the law of the jungle quickly reasserted itself.
People with disabled right-side dorsolateral prefrontal cortexes grabbed whatever money they could from lopsided transactions—even when they knew the deal they were getting was grossly unfair.
“They understood the unfairness of it all, but they simply couldn’t inhibit their need for getting the money,” said Paul Sanberg, director of the Center of Excellence for Aging and Brain Repair at the University of South Florida College of Medicine in Tampa.
Researcher notes that although the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex is located on the right side of the brain, “due to the crossover of the corpus colossum it is perceived as issuing from the left side.”
In related news, it’s a bad idea to swap spit with deer.

But what if the deer’s spit is better than mine…?
From the article:
I think that all statements criticizing french kissing does (female deer, not the third person singular of to do) is Odocoilophobic (more common term is bambiphobic).
Please refrain from anything suggesting Odocoilophobia, or I shall call the National Association for the Advancement of Deer.
Does this mean that leftists are actually right-wingers, and vice-versa?
Last thing anyone wants is for the NAADs to rise up.
Odocoilophile.
Now that I’ve actually read the first article, I think the experiment proves exactly the opposite of what they think it does.
It seems pretty obvious that the second person was given the expectation that the money was supposed to be shared equally. It’s not altruism to tell someone to shove their two dollars, when you feel you’re being cheated out of what is rightfully yours. I would do that even if I didn’t know the guy was going to lose out by it, just because it would be beneath me to accept that much less than my due. Run some electricity through my frontal lobe, though, and who knows what kind of stupid shit I might do.
I have read it a couple of times, and I can’t figure out what the fuck they think it means. Am I just really drunk, or is that a really poorly written piece of nothingness?
Give me a sip of what you’re drinking and I’ll tell you.
Note to self: Find out if I still possess a functioning right-side dorsolateral prefrontal cortex, and have it disabled if I still do. I wanna disconnect my “Give a ####” circuit for real!
Jim Beam seriously impairs right-side dorsolateral prefrontal cortex functionality. The therapy takes years, however, the research evidence is largely anecdotal, and researchers do report a generalized reduction in brain function in addition to reduced right-side dorsolateral prefrontal cortex functionality.
Double-blind studies using home-made alcohol produced from stills using automobile radiators produced tragic results. For long-term therapeutic regimens, use only top-quality commercial distillates.
Geezer–
Truer words never spoken. I think you ought to be appointed Surgeon General of PW.
Hmmmm. Surgeon General Geezer. Not bad.
TW:cars54. Is this a pseudorandom thing? Or does Jeff mess with us? Are you old enough to know what I’m alluding to?
There’s a holdup in the Bronx
Brooklyn’s broken out in fights
There’s a traffic jam in Harlem
That’s backed up to Jackson Heights
Here’s a skunk that’s trapped a child
Krushchev’s due in Idlewilde.
CAR 54 WHERE ARE YOU?
Just looked up the lyrics. That should be:
“There’s a Scout Troop short a child”
But in honor of the armadillo, I like my version better.
I’m with Ardsgaine and B Moe on the “selfishness” experiment. Unless the article left out some very significant details that narrow the range of possible conclusions, the function of the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLDAFPAHDA) may have absolutely nothing to do with selfishness, or may even have the opposite effect of what they said, based solely on this data. In fact, my first thought was that this probably has more to do with risk analysis than anything else – you take the two bucks, even though it’s ridiculously low, because the risk of ending up with nothing just overrides the “need-to-punish” instinct… in which case, the DLKDGHFPDA is pretty much just a more nuanced incarnation of the most basic “threat vs non-threat” instinct.
Then again, this could serve as a handy excuse the next time a girl complains when I ask for head.
“Sorry, babe, my DLHADKEFAP is on the fritz – I just can’t help myself!”
