So I watched Magnolia again last night (second time), and I must admit, I still think it’s a brilliant and provocative movie.
I mean, a deluge of frogs? For Chrissakes, how can you go wrong?
Besides, the movie hints at the kind of acting Tom Cruise is capable of when given an interesting script to work with (Cruise is woefully underrated, I think). And love it or hate it, it’s hard to argue that Magnolia’s talented auteur, P.T. Anderson, is not a truly interesting film-maker.
Wonder if Burt’s still fuming about losing out on that much-deserved Best Supporting Actor Oscar® for Boogie Nights? And to a Beantown-flavored Jacob the Mork, of all people…
And I wonder if Mark Wahlberg wears that prosthetic floppy of his out on dates. Hell, I know I would…

I’ve owned three copies of Boogie Nights. I wore out two VHS tapes before the two-disc DVD set came out. Be sure to test those color bars.
Magnolia I’ve watched almost as many times. It’s the only decent thing Jason Robards has ever done.
Brilliant, brilliant filmmaking.
Melissa likes the part where Tommy boy gets down to his skivvies.
But for my money, it’s Aimee Mann’s music (which inspired the movie) that makes the movie.
Wow.
Forgot to add this.
Ever seen PT’s first flick, Hard Eight?
Stars the usual gang of idiots, minus Cruise, Robards & Reynolds—but plus Sam Fuckin’ Jackson. (Fuckin’ is his given middle name, which he had to change for billing reasons.)
Oh, and Philip Baker Hall will rip your heart out.
In an understated way, of course.
Yeah, Hard Eight.
First time I’d seen Philip Baker Hall since his turn in How I Got Into College. Good flick.
Oh, and Hard Eight was good, too.
