“Iran tests long-range missile”

From UPI:

Iran test fired a sub-to-surface missile in the Persian Gulf during large-scale military exercises, it was reported Sunday.

The Sagheb, or “Piercing,” missile was fired from a submarine and hit a target on the surface of the water less than a mile away, Iran’s official Islamic Republican News Agency, or IRNA, reported.

The test was conducted during Iran’s “Blow of Zolfaqar” military exercises, named for the sword of the prophet Muhammad, which began across the country Aug. 19.

A new phase in the war games began in the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman Friday, IRNA said.

The massive military exercise is being conducted in five phases and will spread across 14 of Iran’s 30 provinces for about five weeks.

The “Sword of Mohammed,” eh.

Isn’t that just like a Mullah? Brings a knife to a gun fight.

It works just fine when the other side isn’t allowed to use their guns.

  2. christian says:

Wait, the Iranians have an SSM called the “Piercing”?  Like “earring”, “belly button ring”, or, um, something more private?

AP cals it a ‘short range missle.’ Same name, but that one was supposed to go farther. This one did travel almost a mile!

  4. Bravo Romeo Delta says:

    “Long-range”?

    “less than a mile away?”

    Hmm… cool hmm

  5. Yeah, BRD, I think we have man-portable missiles with longer ranges. I do believe even our attack subs have missiles with ranges of hundreds of miles.

But, hey, they tell the reporters what to print, and the reporters print it.

  6. B Moe says:

So basically the Iranians have invented flying torpedoes?

  7. Ken says:

“Blow of Zolfaqar”?  What the hell kind of name is that?

Could someone please ask the leaders of the free world, “What are you waiting for?”

TW: comes – as in, “We’re waiting until Iranian ordnance comes crashing in through the window”?

  10. Pappy says:

Less than a 1-mile test shot isn’t out of line for a fledgling sub force.

Odd though – the Sagheb is described as a ‘low & very low altitude air defense missile with all weather operations and multi-target engagement capabilities’.

Must’ve been the “new and improved” Taepodong.

  12. Meg Q says:

“Blow of Zolfaqar” sounds like a bad Islamic/Persian porn movie or something.

“Piercing” sounds like they were going for an almost-homonym with “Pershing” – and, obviously, didn’t get it quite right. Other Pershing similarities, either.

“Blow of Zolfaqar” sounds like something I might do a rail of off the beveled sheet of black glass on the other keyboard drawer.

  15. The Monster says:

I understand we have this technology now:  An unmanned drone carrying a single JDAM uses such a small amount of fuel while circling high over the target area that one can stay there for days before it is relieved by a replacement.  In the meantime, a forward observer may be in position to use a laser to guide the ordnance to a moving target.  Static targets may already have precise GPS coordinates pre-entered, merely awaiting the FO to select the appropriate one (it appears that Ahmedinejad entered this building… Click.) as circumstances warrant.

It would seem appropriate to name such a craft “The Sword of Damocles”.

TW:…for the purpose of putting the target in the right frame of mind.

Soooo, Muhammads “sword” experianced a “blow”.

    There otta be a cartoon.

Clinton is probably thinking “Well, I don’t think we’re fucked.

  17. Well I hope that was an example of its maximum range. It’s not like an Iranian submarine is ever going to get anywhere near as close as a mile from a US warship.

    I hope.

  18. Billy Budd says:

Maybe those nutty Mooselimbs meant Pershing missle, not Piercing. Thirty bucks at the Dollar Store and I could whip up a long range missle of that stature.

    Billy Budd,

    Don’t get overoptomistic grin

But, yeah, the numbers involved are more like “good used car” than “outer space stuff.”

There ain’t no such thing as a laser-guided JDAM, JFTR.  A Predator can carry a GBU-12 500-lb class LGB or two, but that’s a slightly different critter.  JDAMs are GPS-guided.

While I realize that naming one’s sword may have been all the rage 600AD, today it just reeks of someone who hasn’t figured out that D&D is a game.

That would be Ahmadinejad, all right.

If I were a submariner, I would be really grateful to be equipped with a weapon which lets the sub hunting aircraft know exactly where I am the instant I use it.
