… but control of your cell-phone …
A New York lawmaker has proposed a bill that would ban iPhones from being sold in the state, unless Apple provides special “back doors” that would allow law enforcement to spy on users.
That’s a double dose of the Nanny State: setting rules for what can be bought and sold, while giving the government an easier way to spy on residents’ everyday activities.
The bill is sponsored by State Assemblyman Matthew Titone, D-Staten Island, and it would mandate that iPhones and other cell phones sold in New York be “capable of being decrypted and unlocked.” The bill has support, perhaps unsurprisingly, from Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance and other law enforcement groups in the state. […]
Apple’s newest iPhones come with default encryption settings and would be banned from the state by the legislation unless Apple created new software for phones sold in New York. Google has followed suit and offers data encryption as an option on some newer devices.
Those default settings help protect iPhone users from unwanted hacks — from malicious hackers, government spies or law enforcement agents.
If the bill passes, Apple would face fines of $2,500 for every device sold in New York.
The Stasi would be proud.
#NewYorkValues
How does Apple limit decryption only to New York? The easiest thing for Apple is to have one type of phone and the decryption available for everyone. Alternatively, if the phones wind up being “New York specific,'” how do you prevent someone from buying phone in New Jersey?
Those aren’t New York values, they are fascist mandates. I beg you, please stop conflating the two, it can only lead to bad things.
Greetings:
My understanding is that the Obama Administration has already established a beachhead on our cell phones by way of a Presidential Alert system that cannot be extinguished by an owner. And like this months Zika Virus, I’m pretty sure that the concept will be renamed and applied to other hierarchies.

I was making a crack about “new york values” after the faux hysteria over Cruz’s remark.
Cruz’s remark citing Donald Trump’s self-characterization, Darleen. It didn’t come from thin air, but was directly quoted. Which made the denials and ensuing hysteria all the more hilarious. Or whatever it’s called when people laugh at their nation descending into idiocracy. Laughter in lieu of pain, is what that is.
i hope it passes i hope it do

I understand Cruz was riffing off of Trumps characterization and all, but it still pains me. I wish Cruz would have corrected Trumps characterization as being progressive values infecting major urban areas from sea to shining sea, rather than confirming and isolating it as a New York thing. It strikes me as condemning a region when its actually an ideology that is the problem, which confuses the message and misplaces the blame. It was an attack on Trump that inflicted unnecessary collateral damage, leaving Trump in a more sympathetic light than if he had been a little more accurate in his aim.

By that “manhattantrash” you mentioned, I hope you mean all those illegal aliens from other countries, states, cities, and towns who have surreptitiously inserted themselves into one of America’s fabled offshore islands in hopes of some unearned benefits and not those noble Lochinvars from the noble peninsula to the noble northwest who give of themselves for the benefit of the mainland of their birth.
