What do I think about the prospects of Iran getting a nuclear weapon? I don’t, honestly.
But let me tell you this much: if Patriots’ QB Tom Brady thinks he’s gonna spread the field and have his tight ends or backs abuse the Broncos’ linebacking corp by getting Ben Watsen or Christian Fauria or Corey Dillon in favorable coverage situations, he’s never seen Ian Gold, desperate for a Nutty-Buddy, sprinting after a Good Humor truck.
Is all I have to say.

This being a post about football, of course.
The rustling sound you hear is not crickets, but your Colorado readers turning off the room lights and holding lit BICs reverentially before the monitor.
BRONCOS RULE!! WHOO HOO!!
Is Iran doing something nuclear? I didn’t know. Has someone told the IAEA?
But I know for a fact that Tom Brady deserves a Nobel prize for cuteness!
So, Spring Training’s still a couple of months away, huh? Sigh.
Oh, and the nuclear thing is pretty bad, too.
I think I’ve seen this movie before. Wake me when they’re picking ittie bittie pieces of Bronco from the field. Hmmmmmm, tasty.
Dude, I used to love nutty-buddys when I was in grade school!
For many of us who live in New England I say:
GO BRONCOS!!!!!
The rest of the teams in the NFL are simply fighting for the chance to lose to the Colts.
TW : art, as in, the Colts offense is a work of art.
Iran placing nukes in the NFC cities is the only hope Denver, New England or Indianapolis have of winning the Super Bowl. The Redskins are back and have a fleet of Good Humor trucks to keep any foe at bay.
PREACH IT TO THE HEAVENS BROTHA!
Go Broncs!
Two words:
Da’ Bears!
TV (Harry)
Until someone can beat New England in the playoffs, they’re top dog. That said, I think the Broncs-Pats matchup should be a great game, especially on Denver’s home turf.
I keep waiting for the *real* Jake Plummer to show up – you know, the guy who throws 20 interceptions a season? Damn but he was solid this year.
TW: easy
It ain’t easy, but putting $500 on New England to cover
Someone call Hugh Hewitt and tell him Jeff Goldstein just checked down into a Bronco hot route.
I’m all for promoting misunderstandings between blogs.
Amen, Jeff. Amen.
GO DONKS!!!
Just what I expect from a pinko commielib non-49er.
Kyle, don’t fear – the real Plummer will show up real soon.
SPQR – totally OT, but has Steve Verdon gone off his rocker? I saw you commented on his vapid post that imagined John McCain as emblematic of the GOP. I’ve never agreed with many of his views, but he used to at least try to make sense…
And yes, I believe that Belichek will craft a game plan designed to draw the old Plummer out. That game will be a meeting of two of modern football’s great head coaches, IMO.
I predicted two years ago that Plummer would be perfect fit in the Broncos system—that, freed from a terrible team on which he was expected to win every game himself by making playground plays against actual NFL defenses—he would thrive.
Even last year, of his 20 interceptions, at least 7 I can remember were dropped / tipped passes.
To put this in perspective, Brady had 14 INTs this year. Plummer half that.
Here’s the thing about Jake that made him the perfect sign (and, so far as I know, only me and Shanahan were making the argument): He can throw on the roll equally well to both sides; his arm is much stronger than people realize, meaning if Ashlie Lelie couldn’t catch consistently, he’d be completing a couple of deep balls each game; his accuracy, now that he’s settled down into a system where the plays are actually scripted, is much much much improved; he is very difficult to sack and has excellent pocket presence—which means he turns potentiall loses often into 5-15 gains with his feet. This keeps drives alive; and finally, defenses simply have to prepare for him as a threat from sideline to sideline, both running and throwing.
To my mind, he is now one of the most underrated QBs in the league, forced to live down a legacy from the Cardinals that was less of his making than it was a natural outcropping of a horrific offensive system.
Every NFL QB makes mistakes—and Plummers competitive and college and early pro experience forged him into a risk taker; he was a quarterback who, like Mike Vick, could do amazing things, but who also made many mistakes.
Now that he’s matured and learned to throw the ball away or check down to his backs, or simply duck his head and run upfield for 3-5 yards when all else fails—he is one of the league’s premiere quarterbacks. And yes, I mean that.
The Broncos have had a touchdown drive of 80 yards or more in EVERY GAME. THAT is the sign of an offense that is well run and expertly managed—that moves the ball and gets first downs.
Our biggest offensive problem – counterintuitively, as I see it—is our surprising inability to pick up 1 yard with the run on 3 and 4 and 1 situations. This is why we lost in KC.
Defensively, don’t be fooled by our 29th rank against the pass: the Broncos are second agains tht run, and in fact, nobody really even tries much to run against them anymore. Which is why offenses throw so much against us. With that many throws, yardage is going to build up. I hate that they play zone most of the time (bend, not break), but at the end of the day, the linebackers, safeties, and dbacks all tackle well.
Similarly, much has been made about our being 28th in sacking the passer. But this, too, is misleading, as the Broncos are 6th in interceptions, which is a direct result of the way they PRESSURE the QB. Sacks don’t always come. But their disguised blitz packages force QBs into making bad decisions and bad throws. And anybody who’s watched the Broncos this year knows they have been consistently and relentlessly pressuring quarterbacks.
We’ll see which scheme shows up on Saturday, or if the Broncos can run on New England’s newly invigorated run defense. I suspect they will attempt to run no matter what, and that the Pats will key on Tatum Bell, which could create a lot of power running opportunities for an Anderson / Dayne combo.
In the end, we need to force at least 2 turnovers and cover the backs out of the backfield. Brady loves to screen and check down, and the Pats do it as well as anyone. Thankfully, Ian Gold, DJ Williams, and Al Wilson are excellent cover linebackers—and Champ Bailey is a corner who can stop a receiver dead in his tracks. As a safety, Lynch is the same way.
Should be an interesting game. I think we’ll have some difficulty running—and I think Bellicheck will be geared to stop the slants—which means we could be looking at a lot of play action dump offs to the FB or the Tight Ends to set up the deep ball and, ultimately, open us up for some big runs.
We have a talented secondary; whether the scheme is appropriate to stop Brady remains to be seen. I hope we hit him in the mouth several times, he dumps th ball off, and the linebackers stop the gains for virtually nothing.
We shall see.
Denver has a football team?
Yep, and Detroit’s been rebuilding since 1957. A Lions championship? Not in this MILLENium.
tw: Until 2100.
All kidding aside, I was a rabid Denver fan the year of the Orange Crush, only to have my hopes crushed by Dallas. 5 years ago I had lunch with Dan Marin and John Elway, I was truly excited to meet Elway, but it turns out he was as arrogant off the field as he was on the field. I still have hope for the Broncos though….
Odds that I’ll get to see the Steelers play beyond this week- not so high, especially with the game in Indy.
Unless Cowher has them all wearing iPods looping Cap’n & Tenille at 120db during practice all week, that is.
Agreed. In fact, I think he’s a better passer on the run than in the pocket. It also helps to have a dynamic running game – something he never had before coming to Denver.
Jews watch football? I thought they just caused the commercials to happen.
Go America.
Go Broncos.
I think one of the best weapons the Broncos have is Plummer on the naked QB keeper. If you do not play for it, he’ll eat you for 15 or 20 in several key down situations. If you scheme for it, you are diluting the rush and/or coverage to the weak side.
He killed KC with that play the last couple of years.
The problem with a scrambling Plummer against a playoff ready Pats dee is that the Pats have probably the fastest linebackers and DE’s in the league besides Tampa Bay. Plummer will not be able to outrun Vrabel and Bruschi, or even McGinnest for that matter.
The only way the Broncos win this game is if they establish the run early and score touchdowns in the red zone. If they fall behind early and Plummer is forced to win the game with his arm, it could be a long day for Broncos fans.
Be prepared for a Bellichick defensive scheme that will frustrate Plummer immensely. Bill always has a way of exploiting a QB’s weak points, just ask Peyton. Shanahan gets very brave with his risky calls on 4th and 1’s, things like that that if they make can win a game, if they don’t can break your back. If Shanny stays conservative by sticking with the run and keeps it close the Broncos can win going away. That was the Jags problem, they gave up on the run too soon. But if they come out running and gunning and trying to get Plummer to throw all over the place they will fall right in to Bellichicks hands.
You think punching Brady in the mouth is such a good idea? Brady doesn’t get rattled. It usually just makes him play better. The Broncos need to keep that bend-but-don’t-break defense together, that’s the only way you stop the Pats. They can’t give up the long ball either. They have to keep the receivers in front of them and don’t let Brady get his playaction working. Stopping Dillon and Faulk is also essential, although I don’t think the Broncos will have a problem there.
And I’m sorry Jeff, but Plummer doesn’t become an elite NFL QB until he wins a playoff game.
It’s really hard to bet against this Pats team in the playoffs, they just seem to have that extra gear that all dynasty teams have when the big games come around.
Final Score: Pats 27, Broncos 20.
I hate to go on the record (I’m always devastated when I’m wrong), but here goes:
Plummer gains a net 60+ yds on the ground.
Broncos win 20-17
Hail to the Redskins!
Hail Victory!
Braves on the Warpath!
Fight for old D.C.!
The last time the Skins played Seattle, they pretty much shut down Alexander. If they can do that again, and force Hasselbeck to beat them, I think they’ll be in good shape. Oh yeah, and maybe they could come up with more than 120 yds on offense, especially since I have Brunell and Moss.
Anybody been following the idiotic stuff about the Seattle papers refusing to use the word “Redskins?” I love that town.
Who is this “we” and “our” you speak of, Jeff? What position do you play?
GO SKINS
The Broncos and the Pats are both scoring machines, I think the score is going to be much higher unless there’s a blizzard.
Broncos 35, Pats 31.
No blizzard likely.
