Attacks from the Left on Chuck Schumer: scratch a Leftist, reveal an anti-Semite [Darleen Click]

William Jacobson has a roundup of the blood libel and dual-loyalty charges being lobbed toward Schumer over Obama’s Iran Nuclear Deal.

Ever since the White House leaked Thursday night that Sen. Chuck Schumer would be coming out against the Iran deal, the progressive movement has foamed at the mouth with vitriol directed Schumer’s way.

Much of it is just the plain old progressive vitriol of the MoveOn.org, Daily Kos and netroots types. Schumer is a warmonger, wants war, loves war, and so on.

Obama set up that argument when he claimed that Republicans were making common cause with hardline Iranians — even though Obama clinched the deal with hardline Iranians who are laughing all the way to the bank and an internationally-authorized nuclear enrichment program.

Obama set up the disloyalty argument, and it’s no surprise that it’s being used against Democrats who don’t support the deal, particularly Jewish Democrats like Schumer.

That dual loyalty charge — often expressed in terms of being an “Israel firster” — is an old anti-Semitic line of attack, as we explored in detail in a prior post, GreenStar boycott group trainer hurls “Israel-firster” slur at Schumer.

The dual loyalty charge is almost exclusively made against Jewish supporters of Israel. You rarely hear it used against American Christians who support Israel.

As The Tablet magazine reports, given the various dog whistles put out by the Obama administration, it’s no wonder these type of accusations are resurfacing.

Schumer long has been a target of that charge by the anti-Israel boycott movement and anti-Zionist progressive websites.

Now it is on overdrive.

There are a lot of ethnic Jews on the Left who will disavow their attacks on Schumer as anti-Semitic. However, they only identify as Jewish as an ethnicity, not as a religion. Indeed, many are atheists.

Their religion is Leftism.

  1. The phenomenon of the Self-Hating Jew is one worth studying.

While they share many characteristics with other Self-Haters [such as Self-Hating Americans], their enduring ‘otherness’, as it were, seems to me to mean that there are unique aspects to this particular mental illness.

I thought for sure this was just failure theater (and it may very well still be that) but damn if Obama can’t take anyone questioning his judgment!

Left-wing Jews live, work and socialize with left-wing non-Jews, and they believe that they are — to their great regret — identified with the Jewish state in the eyes of fellow leftists. Now, when Israel has left-wing governments — as it did in its first few decades and periodically after that — being identified with Israel is not problematic. But with Israel’s Jews repeatedly electing conservative governments, American Jews on the left believe that they must make it as clear as possible that they in no way support a right-wing Israel. Their moral self-esteem needs it and their left-wing credentials need it. Just look at how Harvard Law Professor Alan Dershowitz, a lifelong Democratic activist and fervent liberal, has been ostracized from polite left-wing company solely because he is an outspoken defender of Israel.

As American Jews on the left see it, their moral credibility in the eyes of fellow leftists in the news media, Hollywood, and academia is threatened by Israel. They must therefore make it abundantly clear that a) they not only do not support the right-wing government of Israel; they do not even support Israel at this time; b) they regard Benjamin Netanyahu as a vile human being; and c) they are ashamed — simply ashamed — of Israel’s Jews for having voted for a right-winger.

  4. Thank you for that, Darleen.

He certainly captures part of it.

Seems as though the so-called Jewish Question lives on. If that is so, then it would be good to remember that this Jewish Question thing is much much older than leftism of whatever stripe, so it cannot boil down to a matter of leftism as such.

  6. Shermlaw says:

Possibility One: Schumer counted the votes and realized that the Iran deal would go through without his vote. (If it were close, he wouldn’t oppose the White House.) He figured, therefore, there would be no problem with the White House allowing him a symbolic “No” vote as his cover. His mistake was believing that Obama would play the politician and let him have his cover, instead of being a dick about it. Of course, this scenario would fit the “Obama as petulant child” leitmotif we’ve all come to know and love.

Possibility Two: It’s closer than we think, and the White House is worried.

Possibility Three: The whole thing is an elaborate kibuki, the deals a foregone conclusion, Schumer wants a lot of blowback from the White House for his own bona fides and the White House is obliging him.

Who knows? I trust no person his spent more than ten minutes inside the Beltway.

  7. EBL says:

Shermlaw, yep. I am going with 1 but would be very happy with 2 and the deal falling through.

  8. Ernst Schreiber says:

The deal only falls through if there is enough opposition to override a veto.

  9. sdferr says:

Oh, I dunno Ernst, since it seems to me that it will fall through when either the IRGC, the Quds Force or Iranian allied Iraqi Shia militias decide to kill or formally take hostage the outnumbered, outgunned, nominally already hostage US military personnel stationed conveniently to their purposes in Iraq by the C-in-C. “What, me worry?”, says the leader of the transformation of the free world. He doesn’t plan for any anticipation of failure. He’s a winner, see?

  10. […] Of course Obama’s deal or war rhetoric is false. The deal actually increases the danger of war and the status quo is better than this deal. Instapundit: Were we better off in the Middle East in 2008 or now (everything Obama has touched has been a disaster), The White House and the Jews (bumped), Iran does not get US, another member of the Zionist conspiracy speaks out, Democrats on the edge of an abyss (what did they sell us out for), Obama feeding antisemitism to pressure Schumer, Jews against Jews, Obama blames Israeli Jews, will Schumer hold firm, The White House and the Jews, When You Lost David Brooks, Iran bragging Obama is under an illusion, strange defense for deal, Trust but Vilify Darleen Click: Scratch a leftist reveal a… […]
