Quote is from Heinlein’s “Starship Troopers.”

  2. McGehee says:

    Guns are the idea.

  3. He never watched “The Savage Curtain.”

So that we may learn and apply a lesson from history; What idea defeated the Nazis?

  5. happyfeet says:

oh god that’s even dumber than a luke bryan song

  6. Oh, the Choomer-In-Chief did watch The Savage Curtain.

Trouble is, he and his Paki ‘friends’ giggled and passed around the doobie on the left-hand side while they did.

I often see Facebook post with pictures of something like animal abuse and how it “should be stopped”.

I usually point out that it appears to be happening in a foreign country. The response is that it still wrong and should be stopped.

I then have to point out it often takes war (or threats or acts of war) to stop people in other countries from doing things you don’t like.

Glenn Beck interviewed Alice von Hildebrand a few weeks ago (publicly available fragment here). She’s the widow of a German anti-Nazi preacher (and a formidable theologian and philosopher in her own right), and she says her husband worried that even though Hitler had been militarily defeated, his ideas had not been.

I don’t have time to review the whole hour to recall exactly which Hitler-esque ideas she meant, but the Totalitarian Temptation has to be one of them.

Also, here’s some creepy alt-history for you: Let’s say Hitler never happened, but the Progressive/Soviet/Fabian movements did.

What would have been the trajectory of the “settled science” of eugenics? Without the severe moral shock that the death camps and Mengele provided, would it not have peacefully marched on, quietly insinuating itself into our institutions and consciousness until it became normal to euthanize defective infants, terminally ill patients (upon diagnosis), and those who are just plain too bothersome to care for? What of the forced sterilizations of “undesirables,” including “lesser races”?

Would America have become One Giant Kermit Gosnell Clinic? Instead of just abortion-on-demand, we’d have the full range of “good genetics” horrors, all of it legal and sanitary and clean and respectable.

How long before such a thing would have ceased? Decades? Centuries? How many would have died in THAT program before it was discredited (if ever) as compared to WWII?

Of course Nazi Germany was an unspeakable atrocity. But what if it headed off a different one? Is human society fated to rush toward depravity by any path available?

I’m going to answer that last one: Yeah, it certainly looks like it. We just can’t seem to help ourselves.

Say, in the 500-kiloton range, delivered from orbit.

  11. 500-kiloton’s?!?

That would certainly hash their mellow.

  12. Di,
In other alt-history: a friend–a messianic Jew who attends our church–says that without the Holocaust, today’s Israel would not not exist. That’s a kind of frightening thought.

Not sure if it would be possible to wipe out Hitler’s ideas, as they really weren’t his in the first place. The Father of Lies sees to it that they’re planted fresh in our minds every generation.

  13. geoffb says:

[W]ithout the Holocaust, today’s Israel would not not exist.

I’m not sure about that as on July 7th 1937 there was a British proposed split into Jewish, Arab, and British Mandate states.

Also just saw something about how this. 1937 split, is being treated historically. Wiki has the Arabs opposed to it and the Jews as for it. However this week I found an old newspaper in my basement from July 10th 1937 and among the news pieces was this one which reports that the Arabs and the Jews were united in opposition to the split. Each had their own reasons but bot opposed it as of the time it was proposed. Later it seems that David Ben-Gurion convinced a majority to agree on the split as the best thing for his people.

  14. LBascom says:

Eh, the idea communism would have prevailed but for naziism is a pretty huge ‘what if’. The atrocities may have played out differently, but they still would have played out. It’s just as easy to imagine communism failing without its (eventual) opposition of Hitler. WWII advanced the USSR’s prestige in a way that it never would have if left to their own devices.

What-if scenarios are starting to give me an eye-twitch.

I don’t know if it’s an overdose or just that they often only seem marginally worse than where we are (or soon will be).

    Greetings:

This just in from my private Department of Redundancy Department server:

Islam is the millstone. It is nothing more than the globalization of 7th Century A.D. (if I may) predatory Arab tribal culture under a thin veneer of religion. And if your plan doesn’t include constraining, undermining, or eradicating Islam itself, you don’t have a plan. what you have is a hope.

  17. sdferr says:

Arab remnants are grubby, true, however, that can’t account for the primary problem, namely, the Persi (a far older oriental despotism) running amok today. Seems to me the problem facing the United States is the determination of its own Commander-in-Chief to see to it that the United States will be punished for its sins, no matter what other evils are loosed on the world.

  22. McGehee says:

In my area diesel retail prices are below regular unleaded at some stations.

In the past I’ve remarked that low demand for diesel implies sluggishness in the demand for goods and services. Until gas prices started rising recently, diesel was often higher than premium. Gas goes up, diesel doesn’t, what’s the conclusion?

Rising gas taxes don’t explain it all.

  23. sdferr says:

Better ideas, he says. Here is his better idea: it’s called AFFH.

  24. Ernst Schreiber says:

I’ve always thought Ann Coulter had the right idea back in September of 2001.
